I have a friend named Chuck who passed away recently. He was a jazz guitarist in bands and a singer in a Barbershop Quartet. As he was terminal from his illness, he lay in his bed with his guitar and worked out a tune, very mellow and slow. He asked me to write lyrics for it. I saw him as being in the twilight of his life, and wanted the words to give him peace in passing. I wrote this to his tune and timing. We recorded his playing of the melody and planned to have his wife sing the song, recording them together for their posterity. He passed before that could be done. His wife has since moved away to be with her daughter in a distant state. I plan to have my own daughter and I do this together as soon as I learn Chuck's guitar piece. As I read through it, and sing it along with Chuck's guitar, I can't help but feel taken back to a simpler time when such tunes and poems were wonderfully common (as opposed to what is written and "sung" on radio today).
TWILIGHT
Now comes the twilight of the day, All cares just melt away, And all below the evening star Find gentle peace.
The last warm rays of setting sun, Now dim as day is done, The nightingale calls from afar As labors cease.
And with long shadows, There comes a breeze, To carry troubles Away with ease, As you please,
The rugged hills are dark and bold, Under skies of crimson gold, And all the birds fly quickly by Back to the nest,
And with an end to fevered rush, Snuggled under twilight’s hush, We share a little sleepy sigh, In welcome rest.
And as the night falls, And eyelids close, The need for sleep calls, In sweet repose, So it goes,
Bathed in the light of lunar beams, We’re free to dream our dreams, Until the morning sun makes Rainbows in the dew.

Its a piece from the past definitely,, Old Fashioned Yes , The line meter looks very good
and matches each verse I echo your sentiment , on some of today's offerings
The music is so important to any well written lyric
Without hearing the two together its hard to say more
One of the most important principles of songwriting is to remember that a good song is a partnership of many different components, all working together to produce a satisfying musical experience.
In that respect, song components are either enhancing or compromising their combined effects.

Yes, it is a bit reminiscent of, say, the "Stardust" era. Don't know if this is what you had in mind with it or not. Back to a time when the word gay meant happy, and aids were things used to help people. Here is a song that proves that old-fashioned isn't necessarily such a bad thing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7MjDVqA3mg
