hi folks...this was produced by Michael Zaneski. I hope you like it. I think it's best heard on a real stereo or good headphones. smile

Fade To Blonde

Well, Iím drinking wine and walking by the oceanís roar
Where her memoryís a wave thatís reaching for the shore
Strands of golden sunlight melt away into the dark
Sundown fills the skyline and the photos in my heart

Fade to blonde and dance across the dunes
Where we once kissed beneath a yellow moon
Now Iím haunted by her until the dawn
Because my dreams theyÖforever fade to blonde

She left one night and itís a mystíry why she had to go
Sheís a woman that a man can love but never know
Even now I see her shadow in the misty chill
If I close my eyes each woman I am holding will

Fade to blonde and dance across the dunes
Where we once lay beneath a yellow moon
Now Iím haunted by her until the dawn
Because my dreams theyÖforever fade to blonde

Fade to blonde and dance across the dunes
Where we once kissed beneath a yellow moon
Now Iím haunted by her until the dawn
Because my dreams theyÖforever fade to blonde

Lovely song.

Mike really does a nice job coloring the rhythm with guitar notes.
He's nailing that lately.

This is great, the music grabs at your senses. Reminds me of one of my favorite songs of the millennium... https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=V9NhncU5_CE

I don't think those guitars are real, but they sound great here.

Great lyrics and production. This is why I won't let Mike record one of my songs , cause I won't get the credit I so deserve....tee hee

Seriously this is sounding hot.

Thanks guys. And Mike did a great job. I'm extremely pleased.

I wrote the lyric back in 06 or 07. I had my pinky toe in Nashville's pond back then and it was suggested that it should be rewritten to de-poeticize it. I politely declined, believing it was what it needed to be. Sharyn composed a melody around 2010 (You can hear our other collab Where the Rainbow is the Gold on Soundclick).

I sent her worktape to a well meaning publisher and they suggested a Kenny Chesney/Jimmy Buffet vibe. I never sent it out into the world again.

What you hear is the arrangement I always wanted for it. Mike did a tremendous job. smile

What a fine lyric supported by an immediately accessible melody and chord structure. The lead vocal is very effective - and of course the arrangement and production is terrific.

Lovely lyrics.
Maybe a bit of over production but that's just my feeling.

It's never too late? Yes it is, so do it now.

If, given time, a monkey can write the complete works of Shakespeare maybe there's hope for me.

Listened on the headphones and those harmonies are just magical! Beautiful lyric and melody. Michael really knows how to take it up a notch. Very jealous. Beautiful song. I can't find any fault. Did I mention the vocal harmonies? As I listen, all the layering of the vocals is just perfect. Wonderful mis.

I'm with Vic about the production. Mike works his usual magic, and I am in awe as usual, especially at the way the waves are evoked at the beginning, but is it possible to have a little too much magic?

I also think whoever made the suggestion about "de-poeticizing" the lyric had a point. It seems a bit self-consciously "poetic." As a listener, I would have liked a couple of concrete, evocative images to get hold of and relate to in a sensual way - her upturned face, her hair in the wind, salt spray on their faces? - amongst the more nebulous almost abstract imagery. You do have the drinking wine by the shore and someone dancing across the dunes, but neither of those are immediate enough for me.

I'm probably being a bit over-critical here because I have two songs that feature a guy standing on a beach missing someone and thinking "deep thoughts" and have wrestled with the same problems smile

Lush and lovely, Rob, Sharyn and Mike. Maybe a minute longer than it needed to be but what a hauntingly beautiful minute is was. smile

Thank Ricki. smile

Gavin, it's been at least eleven years since I wrote the lyric but I remember the process fairly well.

I thought of the hook and was fairly sure I could pen a lyric with wide appeal around it. For that reason, I kept it short, without a bridge, going for a big chorus. The title meant the lyric should be dreamy and mysterious.

What setting did the hook require? Outdoors at sundown. Where? The beach. Plus, I grew up around the Bay Area.

There are at least three things you have to do:

1) write toward the hook

2) lead into the chorus

3) wherever possible, show don't tell.

With a seasoned writer these things should be instinctive.

My first two lines put the narrator on the beach and use the imagery of the beach to reveal how and why he's feeling what he's feeling.

I only have so much space. I have to write to the hook. That leaves out "salt spray on their faces", and "her upturned face". I wouldn't use "wind in her hair" because it's a cliche.

I describe the woman in vs two then say she was unforgettable without saying it, leading back into the hook.

You may have written it differently, better even...but that's why I wrote it the way I did. I thought that's what it needed to be and still do. smile

Edited to remove a joke that was in really bad taste.

I'm guessing it's just as well I didn't read this before the joke in really bad taste was removed LOL.

Ah the song Mike worked on before he started on mine!
The lyric is good and the production even before giving it a spin would undoubtably be equally a two thumbs upper
This is another reason to go back to older writes in the hope an unpolished gem could be hiding.
I have good headphones and bad ears sadly but this sounded good
A refreshing collab
Best of luck with it
Travis

Couchgrouch,

Really strong production on this oneóyouíre right, it takes a good pair of headphones to really appreciate it. Terrific job by Mike, and heís got some great lyrics to work with. Not exactly my type of tune, but easy to like and appreciate nonetheless. Good luck with this oneódeserves lots of listens.

Kind regards,

Deej
