"Follow your dreams!"
vs.
"Don't quit your day job!"

Choose.

MONTANA SUNSETS

i'm gonna be a cowboy
i'm american you know
where a boy can be what he chooses
and dreaming will make it so
but for now i'll do what the folks expect
say what they want me to say
but let it be known, until i'm grown
i'm living for the day (when i'll)

   watch montana sunsets
   talk with an indian guide
square dance at a neighbor's ranch
then hit the range and ride

i found someone who shares my dream
the circle t's in sight
i'm gonna be a cowboy
we'll sing prarie songs at night
but we can't leave things unfinished here
folks depend on us
but as soon as we get the loose ends to fit
it's montana or bust

   and we'll watch montana sunsets
and talk with an indian guide
   we'll square dance at a neighbor's ranch
then hit the range and ride

i was handy with a six gun
i could have scored in a rodeo
but sometimes things do come up
you know how these things go
we never made montana
but i still sometimes dream
of cattle drives and tumbleweed
of hearing eagles scream

   martha, bring my slippers
    bring my tv guide
   john wayne's on tonight
he'll hit the range and ride

   the sun sets in montana
   where cowboys still reside
it's late night in new york
time to hit the range and ride...

pleasant dreams, martha.

Comments welcome.
Have at it.

I love it, Floyd. Great production and vocals, of course, but what a great lyric! More wistful than sad.

One line didn't sound quite right to me: " john wayne's on tonight." My ear expected more syllables, something like "There's a John Wayne movie tonight" or "There's a John Wayne movie on tonight." (depending on how you phrased it.)

Really nice song, Floyd:

Like Gavin said, "Great Production and Vocals"... but you already know that. Your singing voice is immediately recognizable... and your lyrical capabilities are top notch. Montana is a lyrical name and I've filed away a couple myself. Remember the movie, "The Hunt for Red October" where Sean Connery's 2nd in Command was looking forward to a ranch in Montana! You captured the feeling he expressed quite well. Thanks for sharing... and keep them coming. ----Dave

Hello Floyd,

This is a beautiful piece of work / art.

I'm jealous that I didn't write this part.........

martha, bring my slippers
bring my tv guide
john wayne's on tonight
he'll hit the range and ride

Thanks for this mornings entertainment.

You have the right voice for country, Floyd.
Great write too.

There's something that doesn't sound quite right.
Not exactly sure what it is but the second two lines in the first two choruses don't sound quite right to my ears.
Could be a wrong note in the harmony, guitar or bass line. Not sure. Maybe a BIAB glitch.

Vic

It's never too late? Yes it is, so do it now.

If, given time, a monkey can write the complete works of Shakespeare maybe there's hope for me.

Nice Title.

The song is not really my kind of thing, but Chris LeDoux would like it quite a bit. smile

Very engaging on first listen. I was imagining Marty Robbins or Jimmy Buffet or even the Eagles. A great nostalgic theme beautifully sung and arranged.

A variation on Gavin's "John Wayne" suggestion: "John Wayne's on the screen tonight" - although I'm not sure it will fit with your melody line.

Thanks, Gavin. Glad yiou enjoyed the song....

regarding the john wayne thing... I don't "hear the need" for more syllables there - there have been plenty of syllables in the two line prior to that, which should allow the "release" of a "less syllable" line at that point... But, more importantly... there is a difference between these two choices - referencing a "John Wayne movie" puts the emphasis on watching the movie... the statement "john wayne's on tonight" implies a "relationship" that our cowboy feels to Cowboy John Wayne, since in his mind he (the singer) IS a cowboy - not just a guy who watches cowboy movies from his apartment in NY...

Sweet one, Floyd. You're sounding awesome as usual. I wanted to be a cowgirl myself...even had a cap gun. I never made it to Montana to live but go nearly every year. And on the way one time, I wrote a song about a cowgirl, Buffalo Alice! Close enough for me. smile

Hey, Floyd,

This is sounding really good! Your usual killer production and vocals. A really strong tune and a great listen. Hope this one gets a lot of listens!

Oh, and on the John Wayne line—it does seem to me like it could use an extra syllable or two. But then, I’m pretty wordy (no surprise) so take it with a big grain of salt.

All the best regards,

Deej

Nicely written and performed, Floyd.

It's interesting that you give no details about what his life was actually like - other than he was still married. I predict that, because of this, people will react differently. Some will see it as a guy that regrets not chasing his dream. Others will see it from a more wistful point of view - no regrets, just wistful. A guy has a good life - that maybe could have been different. I see it from the latter point of view.

Invokes feeling though, for sure.

Thanks, Vic. I listened to the lines that I think you are referring to - a bunch of times - and I don't hear whatever it is you are hearing....
so I check individual tracks there, too.... still don't hear it...

What the heck to say? This is such a beautiful song and it evokes memories of our trips out west.

The lyric, melody and your vocals flow like a lovely clear Montana stream. Anybody from the "silver screen" generation that doesn't get drawn into this doesn't have a musical bone in their body. smile

So dang many writers would be happy to create one song like this but you just produce them one after another. And share them.

Yep, we like it!

Thanks, Scott... I think the wistful view point is a good place to land. But always good to leave it open to interpretation so each listen can make their own choice... Glad to have you have a listen...
