Hometown RefugeeHi folks, Janice now has an album available on iTunes, Apple Music, Spotify, Pandora, Amazon, Google Play and many other platforms (Janice Merritt, “All OverThe Map”). All done for nothing but fun. Hey, 1,000,000 plays on Pandora will net an artist a whole $1650 so it had better be just for fun “Hometown Refugee” is the kickoff tune and our objective was an Americana tune with a hint of southern gothic in the lyric. Hey, THE southern gothic writer, Flannery O’Connor, was from our hometown. Our Australian friend Peter plays guitar, Janice sings, and Bud did the production thing - RealtTacks, RealDrums, mixing and mastering. Comments are welcome and your time to listen is always appreciated. J&B Hometown Refugee © 2018 Janice and Bud Merritt you can’t go back girl it’s a dead end don’t know why the hell I ever tried maybe I dreamed of the invitation or it’s another memory that lied should’ve headed on never slowed down now I’m a refugee in my home town my old friends have become strangers they’ve grown cold, dark, bitter i see them circling their wagons trolling me to pull that trigger should’ve headed on never slowed down now I’m a refugee in my home town a courthouse clock with the wrong time store windows reflect ghosts of past parking meters stand like rusty sentinels nothing lasts nothing lasts should’ve headed on never slowed down now I’m a refugee in my home town

Hello J&B. You captured the story of returning home and what it can actually mean. I return to mine once in a blue moon and when an occassion is going on. Then everybody returns and it is great but besides that I do not feel as if it is still my, "Home Town". Great piece!

Takes a voice as good as Janice's to pull this one off.
Love those lines: should’ve headed on never slowed down now I’m a refugee in my home town ;and store windows reflect ghosts of past
I'll be going over to Spotify now to check out the album!

Hi J&B Great story and in many ways true. I recall an Elvis song with a similar theme, A Stranger in my own home town. Great vocal and production. Bedt of luck with your CD too Travis

Yep...you really can't go home again but you can't blame a girl for trying. Nicely done, J&B.

Enjoyed every second of my "listen" J&B:
The backing guitar work was pretty special, too. Going home is usually an impossible dream... and you covered all the bases. Fantastic song by fantastic people. ----Dave

It would take "lotto winning" luck to make any $ from streaming nowadays. Just for fun...although interestingly a few cuts have gotten more play than I anticipated. J&B

J&B, you guys should put a link to your songs on Spotify on your website. I'm listening now, but it took a few minutes searching. Surprising how many songs and albums there are called "All Over the Map."

Hi J&B. Lovely song and vocal from your team. Not a great fan of the busy Latin percussion in this but that's just my own personal take. :-) Vic

Surprising how many songs and albums there are called "All Over the Map." Thanks for the heads up. I'll sign up with them and put the link there or state that a search on "Janice Merritt" will work. I checked and she's the only one there Appreciate it and hope you found something you liked on the album. Bud

Yes, I liked the album very much. I'm only half way through it because I got interrupted, but I'll be listening to the rest of it. And because it's on Spotify, you should get about 2 cents. You're welcome If you have a Spotify for Artists account, it's easy to grab a graphic widget for the link and place it on the site. What I did was to place a link for people to follow me on Spotify on my home page http://mysteriousbeings.com/...and one for individual songs on the relevant pages, e.g. http://mysteriousbeings.com/portfolio/how-can-i-leave-her-behind/I don't have an album, so I had to do it for each song. Since I only have four songs at Spotify, it didn't take me long LOL. You would probably just want to do it for Janice's album.

Hey guys!
Unique sultry melody works well with these lyrics. I can relate a bit. I visited my home town over last Memorial Day and stayed in a motel, since no relatives that I know are around there anymore. I went in to the local hot spot for a beer hoping to just see someone I recognized, but after 50 years and a new generation of folks, didn't see a soul that I knew--was a lonely feeling, kind of like Jimmy Stewart in the movie "Its a Wonderful Life" when he went back to his home town to see it if he had never born!
This song not about what I exactly described, but the feeling of "this place has sure changed" is the same. I do think there are those venture away from home towns and those who stay; and those that stay perhaps become more close minded and less likely to accept those that left and return back with open arms. Usually those that leave when returning seem not find the "nostalgic return" they anticipated.......
I might also do the percussion a bit different, but applaud your creativity--very cool song, and good luck with the album!

Hi J&B. Lovely song and vocal from your team. Not a great fan of the busy Latin percussion in this but that's just my own personal take. :-) Vic He Vic, glad you mostly liked it! Interesting that you feel that the drums are Latin percussion in sound. They are one of the 2018 BiaB" RealDrum - Multi" tracks called Americana Roots and to which BiaB had already added a wood block. The emphasis is heavily on the toms so I guess that gives it the feel you are hearing. Thanks for your thoughts! J&B Hey guys!

. Thanks Eddie...this wasn't particularly autobiographical in that we would like to LEAVE our hometown and become refugees somewhere! Glad you liked it. Thanks for listening and commenting. J&B

Janice and Bud,
Nice mood setting right out of the gate; and the vocal is spot on—hold the listener. Nice choice on percussion, cool nuanced solos. Slick tune. Enjoyed the listen!

You CAN go home again - but maybe you shouldn't This struck a chord with me - felt much the same on occasion. Vocal is great and I love the chord progression - feels very fresh but still accessible. Nice! Scott
