Lol. I remember seeing jokerman on mtv, but the arrangement was a lot more mellow and less guitarish.

I'm note sure what to think about this. On one hand it's cool to see Dylan rockin out, on the other it sees like an attempt to be hip and current,(by that time periods standard)

The music is cool, garage rocky, but the lyrics are almost too good for rock n roll, it's a bit like showing up for your auto repair job in a suit.

I dig this though in a confused kind of way

It was always a soft tune, some electric guitar licks, but never a driving rock tune

Dylan was always puzzling. Great.

It's never too late? Yes it is, so do it now.

If, given time, a monkey can write the complete works of Shakespeare maybe there's hope for me.

Yeah, anybody know what the hell this song is about? IS it great poetry if nobody knows what the hell you are saying?

It reminds me of something Nostradamus might have written in one of his quatraints. I'd love to hear what you all think the song means. I enjoy ambigious lyrics but this is too much.

Standing on the waters casting your bread
While the eyes of the idol with the iron head are glowing
Distant ships sailing into the mist,
You were born with a snake in both of your fists while a hurricane was blowing
Freedom just around the corner for you
But with the truth so far off, what good will it do?

Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune,
Bird fly high by the light of the moon,
Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman

So swiftly the sun sets in the sky,
You rise up and say goodbye to no one
Fools rush in where angels fear to tread,
Both of their futures, so full of dread, you don't show why
Shedding off one more layer of skin,
Keeping one step ahead of the persecutor within

Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune,
Bird fly high by the light of the moon,
Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman

You're a man of the mountains, you can walk on the clouds,
Manipulator of crowds, you're a dream twister
You're going to Sodom and Gomorrah
But what do you care? Ain't nobody there would want to marry your sister
Friend to the martyr, a friend to the woman of shame,
You look into the fiery furnace, see the rich man without any name

Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune,
Bird fly high by the light of the moon,
Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman
Well, the Book of Leviticus and Deuteronomy,
The law of the jungle and the sea are your only teachers
In the smoke of the twilight on a milk-white steed,
Michelangelo indeed could've carved out your features
Resting in the fields, far from the turbulent space,
Half asleep near the stars with a small dog licking your face

Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune,
Bird fly high by the light of the moon,
Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman

Well, the rifleman's stalking the sick and the lame,
Preacherman seeks the same, who'll get there first is uncertain
Nightsticks and water cannons, tear gas, padlocks,
Molotov cocktails and rocks behind every curtain,
False-hearted judges dying in the webs that they spin,
Only a matter of time 'til night comes steppin' in

Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune,
Bird fly high by the light of the moon,
Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman

It's a shadowy world, skies are slippery gray,
A woman just gave birth to a prince today and dressed him in scarlet
He'll put the priest in his pocket, put the blade to the heat,
Take the motherless children off the street
And place them at the feet of a harlot

Oh, Jokerman, you know what he wants,
Oh, Jokerman, you don't show any response
Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune,
Bird fly high by the light of the moon,
Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman

This guy seems to have some ideas. But it seems it requires an education and background to understand it.

I think it has biblical undertones, maybe telling of the last days and the judgement that is coming. I like songs that tell it as it is, that don't leave you guessing as to its meaning.

Yeah, i do like artistic lyrics though. Everybody who listens should be able to have their own interpretation. It just seems that in this one its too cryptic to get anything out of it.

You can tell the lyrics are great, but what they are suppose to mean is another.

Here is a Springsteen song, very underrated tune of his, it appears to be a love song or relationship song, but if you dig, there is another thing going on. Its great when you can still give a listener their own choice. That's art, making a song about two things or three things at the same time. Im not political so I choose the love song route.

Wow! Fdemetrio, I hadn't heard that song, and I love Springsteen. I wonder if the secret of his lyrics isn't that he gives you just enough in the way of visuals and almost understood lines to draw you in. Those lines whose meaning you don't quite grasp have already painted a picture in your mind and it's more a case of fitting those pictures together than not understanding the meaning of the words. Of course, given his singing style, not understanding the words can literally be a problem sometimes, but I'm not talking about that. He could sing the phone book for four hours and I'd still buy a ticket.

His great songs in 2k are rare, but this one is one of the best songs i've heard in 2k.

I saw him perform it live during that tour, but he almost never plays it live any more. Usually they put out an album just so they can tour, and only play one or two songs from it.

The people are there for Born To Run and Darkness on the Edge of Town and The River mostly. Even his Born In The USA stuff sounds kind of dated.

But that tune is one of his best songs ever, so few people know it. Shows what you can do with a pop tune

You have to dig a little but it's an Anti Bush song, as well as a song about a woman whose counting on getting by on her looks and appearances forever

The meaning I got was for a woman too elusive for the average man because she thought her looks were so far above the rest that she could choose whom she wanted and the heck with the rest of the world. But looks have a way of fading and she'd have no friends in the end.

Yeah Everette, thats one side of it.

But there's more than meets the eyeee.

It was written in times of Bush, so you do need that background. A kid would have no idea.

As i Paste it out, wow what a great lyric....

But there are references to Bush in there. I think he was saying Bush would end up falling do to lying about invading iraq. He went after Sadaam but Sadaam did not cause 9-11. "A silver plate of pearls my golden child" Wealthy guy handed riches. "Satin sky's gone candy-apple green. The crushed metal of your little fine machine"

I think as a whole its about living on appearances, but eventually people see through it, and it wont be so good.

Its vague towards Bush, but I believe its there. Maybe cause I know he was against Bush. Notice the white, blue and red in the first verse, American Flag colors... Then hes saying the colors are blurred with daisy grey blue. Great art whether u agree with the sentiment or not.

White roses and misty blue eyes
Red mornings and nothing but grey skies
A cup of coffee, your heart shot clean through
Jacket you bought me gone daisy grey-blue

You're smilin' now but you'll find out
They'll use you up and spit you out now
Your head's spinnin' in diamonds and clouds
But pretty soon it turns out
You'll be comin' down now baby
You'll be comin' down
What goes around it comes around and
You'll be comin' down

Easy street and quick buck and true lies
Smile's as sad as those dusky blue skies
A silver plate of pearls my golden child
It's all yours at least for a little while
You'll be fine long as your pretty face holds out
Then it's gonna get pretty cold out
Endless streams of stars shootin' by
You got your hopes on high

You'll be comin' down now baby
You'll be comin' down
What goes around it comes around and
You'll be comin' down
You'll be comin' down now baby
You'll be comin' down
What goes around it comes around and
You'll be comin' down

For a while you'll go sparkling by
Just another pretty thing on high

Like a thief on a Sunday morning
It all falls apart with no warning
Satin sky's gone candy-apple green
The crushed metal of your little fine machine

You'll be comin' down now baby
You'll be comin' down
What goes around it comes around and
You'll be comin' down
You'll be comin' down now baby
You'll be comin' down
What goes around it comes around and
You'll be comin' down
