I got the idea for this daft little song from all the commercials on the TV for dating sites, especially the ones targeted at old geezers and geezerettes. It just seemed that someone ought to write a song about that. So I did. And here it is.

SoundCloud Link

IRISH GIRL 63
Words & Music by Gavin Sinclair

Gonna take a break and make myself a nice cup of tea
Pull up a chair and switch on my computer
Wonder if maybe there’s a message here for me
From somebody who thinks that I might suit her
Maybe I’ll update my profile picture
With something more handsome, younger and richer
Shouldn’t have been so honest when I picked it
Hold on – somebody just clicked it
(Well hello there)

CHORUS
Irish Girl 63
Are you the one for me?
Brown hair, blue eyes
Makes me wonder if maybe I
Could start to live again
This broken heart of mine is
Ready for love

When I was young I used to have to go around to bars
And hope some pretty girl would give me a chance
Now I talk to the ladies without getting off my arse
I do my dating in my underpants
Is anybody looking for a lonely baby boomer?
Average build, blue eyes and a good sense of humor
The kids are all gone and the mortgage is all paid
But the wife’s gone too and I ain’t getting laid

CHORUS

(INSTRUMENTAL)

CHORUS

Non-smoker…..social drinker
Loves going out and….staying in
Reading, concerts, cooking, travel
Long walks and going to the gym
Warm hearted….likes to laugh
Two dogs….no cats
Catholic, Jewish, Protestant, agnostic
Liberal, Conservative, skinny, fat
They all have one thing in common
They’re ready for love.

Well, hello there! What a hoot! The mortgage is all paid and I ain't gettin laid...priceless rhyme, as is baby boomer and sense of humor. Fun, clever tune, Gavin and the band sounds great. smile

Thanks Calvin and Ricki for listening and commenting.

I should probably have included the lyric in my original post, so I edited it to fix that.

Ricki nailed the two rhymes we were going o mention. And as she said... fun and clever.

Those incessant tv ads are, indeed, fertile ground for song writing ideas!

Us two (happily married) boomers enjoyed that!

Hi Gavin. Good idea, these sites I believe give even more power to the women than they normally had in a bar. And you might not know if their even a real person until they don't show up. Or showed up but you didn't recognize them...lolllll. Just gave myself an idea

I think you can tighten up the melody a bit and watch out for the robotic delivery.

But I enjoyed this, I suspect a lot more songs abiut the Internet will be coming out in these times.

Thanks for the suggestions, Fdemetrio. I get the robotic delivery thing. Somebody else that has heard it also suggested I could vary things a bit. I will probably give it a shot. I'm not a singer, but that's not really an excuse for not trying to get better at it - realistically, nobody else is going to sing my songs LOL.

Not so sure I know what you mean by "tighten up the melody." Not that you're wrong, just that I don't know what you are trying to say with the phrase. Can you explain?

Make it more definitive, it sounds a bit like, hey let me get all my words in....
The listener doesn't see it that way.

Your voice can work on a song like this, throw it up on YouTube, or pass it along on social media. Might get....a few, dozen hits!

Most importantly, you had fun with it.

Hi Gavin

What a delightful and timely lyric. A song like that could find a place in the right musical theater play or TV skit. For that matter, it would work well as a spoken word piece or as a poem to be read. I enjoyed the melody/chord structure - and the arrangement and playing are well developed. May I ask how the music tracks were assembled - did you enlist others?

Hmm, that's something to think about. I'm not sure that I agree that it sounds like that, although, of course, I'm the worst one to judge smile

The melody of the chorus is actually one that I've carried around in my head for ages. It wasn't written around the lyric, more the other way around. I kind of liked the way it meanders in a slightly unusual direction before coming home again.

Thanks for your input. Much appreciated.

Mike, the answer is that I do a lot of cheating LOL. Mostly I use Band in a Box software. To me it's kind of like having a band with endless patience that never complains about how long they've been working on this bloody song.

Thanks for your kind comments.

Well if you say nobody is going to record your songs, then it probably doesn't matter anyway. Im here to give subjective feedback, just as subjective as anyone elses, worth about the cost it was

And taken in that spirit, Fdemetrio. A bargain at the price LOL. Thanks again. Just because I can't hear what you're hearing on this occasion doesn't mean I don't appreciate your feedback (or that the fault isn't with me for not being able to hear it).

OK, Fdemetrio, I'm confused now. Are you misreading my posts and thinking I'm "stung" by your constructive criticism. That's what I'm here for. I thought about what you said and, on this occasion, I'll probably go with my gut about the melody, while taking your comments about the vocals onboard. There is absolutely no need for you to take offense at that. Or am I the one misreading your posts?

Hi Gavin:

Enjoyed your song. Cleverly written and well performed. Be as "robotic" as you want... it (to me) is a song intended to amuse and entertain listeners who've known life a bit more than "the younger set."
Sorry I'm late. Been "polishing" some songs needing to be rescued from the scrap heap of futility.

Thanks for taking time to share this little gem... and I appreciate the "liner notes."

All the best, ----Dave

Great tune and so universal for us "older" ones Gavin. Someone needed to write it and you did. smile

Hi there Gavin.
For some reason this line tickled me:

"Now I talk to the ladies without getting off my arse
I do my dating in my underpants" :-)

Fun song.

Vic

It's never too late? Yes it is, so do it now.

If, given time, a monkey can write the complete works of Shakespeare maybe there's hope for me.

I'll admit I smiled to myself as I wrote those lines.

Thanks for listening.
