Sometimes it's just time for something silly, and this is pretty silly, even for me. I woke up one morning with it half-formed in my head and thought it might be fun to record it. I think it has a great chance of commercial success in the five minutes of complete nonsense genre that's red hot right now smile

Actually, if I were a performer, I think it might be fun to close a show with this. It does have a kind of sing-along chorus and an appropriate message for the end of a show.

Any comments/suggestions welcome, as always.

ITíS NICE TO MEET YOU Ė SO LONG
or
THE GOAT, THE GNU & THE TUMBLEWEED
(Words & Music by Gavin Sinclair)

When a goat and his hungry friends have stripped a mountain bare
He simply shrugs his shoulders, all four
And moves with his colleagues to another mountain where
Of nutritious grass to eat thereís plenty more
I am a goat, just ask anyone
I never hang around when once a job is done
Iíd speak of this some more, but I really must be gone
Itís nice to meet you Ė so long.

CHORUS
Itís nice to meet you
But I must be on my way
Thereís somewhere that I have to be
Though where I couldnít say
Itís a lovely place you have here
I like it just fine
But my mind has bought a ticket
And I canít be left behind

Thereís no point in going back to where you last saw a gnu
In fact there may be danger even trying
For the gnu will be gone replaced perhaps by a new gnu
But also perhaps by a lion
I resemble a gnu maybe more than you k-new
The gnu and I keep moving. Itís what we do
And Iíll be leaving again in a minute or t-wo
Itís nice to meet you Ė so long

CHORUS

A tumbleweed may tumble into town but he wonít linger
Longer than he must to not seem rude
The tumbleweedís humble needs can be counted on one finger
The wind at his back and life is good
The chosen occupation of this undemanding vegetation
Is a leisurely peregrination through the deserts of the nation
A plant without a plan or specific destination,
Itís nice to meet you Ė so long

CHORUS

That was great fun and very clever wordplay. I could imagine The Irish Rovers tackling it in their heyday. And definitely some very catchy piano accompaniment. I'm sure there's a current market for this song - possibly in children's TV shows.

Now "peregrination" is not a term you hear very often in lyrics! smile Cool word play happening here.

Enjoyed the humor and the supportive arrangement arrangement...piano is very engaging.

Thank you Mike, Calvin, Travis, Janice & Bud for listening and your kind words.

J&B, I was rather surprised myself when "peregrination" somehow popped into my head. LOL.

Love it! So much fun, had me smiling from the first line.

There are a host of good lines there. I really enjoyed:
Thereís somewhere that I have to be
Though where I couldnít say

; and
I resemble a gnu maybe more than you k-new
; and
The tumbleweedís humble needs can be counted on one finger

The piano works well, but for me the harmonica is the star.

What a wonderful romp! I enjoyed that so much. smile

"The chosen occupation of this undemanding vegetation

Priceless!

I did wonder what it would sound like with a Johnny Cash, clickety clack rhythm.

It's never too late? Yes it is, so do it now.

If, given time, a monkey can write the complete works of Shakespeare maybe there's hope for me.

Gavin,

What a fun song to listen to! As others have noted, just some great and very creative lines that run throughout this. Really enjoyed hearing this one! Great job!

All the best,

Deej

Thanks Rainy Day Man, Dave, Vic and Deej for listening and commenting.

Vic, it's hard to imagine a Johnny Cash, clickety clack rhythm without a Johnny Cash voice. I'm having a hard time recovering from a cold, which might help, but still not sure I could pull it off.

I enjoyed writing this lyric and found it came really easily. I think that's maybe because most of my songs set out to tell a story, whereas this one really just says "I have a restless spirit," nothing more. That frees you up just to play with words and images to your heart's content.

What fun! Getting a goat, a gnu and a tumbleweed all in the same song, have it make sense and in true folk fashion as well...quite an accomplishment! Well done!

Thanks for listening and commenting, Ricki and Floyd. Ricki, my next song will include a frog, a pot-bellied pig and a praying mantis. I'm trying to create a genre all by myself smile

Hello Gavin. Great ditty and could easily be seen as a childrens song. Good luck with it.
