Hi, all: Something new, and another exercise for me on production. Thanks to some tips from our fellow JPFrs, I’m learning a little bit more each time out—hoping this is an improvement over past efforts. Any thoughts or suggestions on the mix would be much appreciated. Also, easy enough for me to re-do the vocal, so any thoughts on slight tweaks to the lyrics are welcome as well. Hope it’s worth the listen, and thanks in advance for any feedback! Everyone Says (Updated)You belong right here, right next to me. You were wrong, my dear, to ever leave. You know I never meant to hurt you that way, Now you're gone but you’re coming back someday ’Cause everyone says you’re just a little bitten; everyone says, you’re twice shy; everyone says, our love’s been ever written in the stars and spelled across the skies. Seems you took off love when we’d just begun. Can’t we both concede the mistakes of the young? Let regrets roll off both our shoulders; we were kids but now we’re older. And everyone says your just a little kitten; everyone says, you need time; everyone says, that girl I’m on a mission; your sweet love is all that I desire. All our friends know us so much better, and they all say we should stay together. Don’t you think true love is worth a try? You know I never meant to hurt you that way, but you’ll be back, it’s all that they all say. Yeah, everyone says you’re just a little bitten; everyone says, you’re twice shy; everyone says, it’s obvious you’re smitten. Destiny is on our side; I just don’t see why you try and fight it. Just can’t believe that this could be goodbye. (c)2018 DJ Lekich

Hi Deej liked the palm tree! This is a good crisp sound even to my bad hearing. The song has a 60s feel to it and could easily be on the playlist of some UK band continually doing those Silver and Gold nostalgia package shows. That's not meant as a put down by the way! As said before you have a good voice and it works well here Best of luck with it Travis

Morning, Deej:
I enjoyed your song. Travis summed up the "feel" or vibe of the song... but that does not diminish your work. Great vocal delivery and the melody and words "shook hands" quite well. I'm hoping you can find an "open door" somewhere and get it started up the charts.

Deej,
Cool song. Love you vocal on this. A ton of emotion in it...
Backing sounds good. Seemed odd that there were no drums in a song like this? It has such a great drive to it, drums would really make it "pop", I think.
Enjoyed that...

Deej, I'm absolutely loving what I'm hearing. Your writing and your singing are so incredibly strong. You're definitely a very talented musician. Like floyd, I'd like to hear drums too. That said, their absence did not diminish my total enjoyment of your creation and your presentation. Also, in case you're interested... ... if you are looking at getting better sounds... have a look at the CLA plugins below. I bought them yesterday and I'm totally blown away by how great they are and so easy to use. https://www.waves.com/bundles/chris-lord-alge-signature-seriesThe normal price for the plugins is US$399, they are on special for the moment at US$69. I have heard that upgrading to V10 incurred an extra fee. That wasn't my experience. I paid with PayPal and then installed an upgraded after the installation. Regards, Noel

I like your arrangement and your singing is strong and compelling. Your recording mix is full and well spread out. I echo an early comment that the overall sound is crisp - a good thing for my old ears.

Travis and Dave: Thanks to you both for stopping in--appreciate the listen and glad you liked the song.
Dave: Charting a song would be a very cool thing, but that would mean trying to do something with a song, and I don't have the first idea how. Nor, to be honest, do I have any ambitions or allusions in the regard. I've read enough on this board to know it's near impossible in today's world. This is just a hobby for me, and bottom line, I'm just an amateur. While I like playing other artists songs, when I pick up a guitar I just start playing with chords and melodies. I can't not do it--so I'm finally giving into it. I'm happy just to hear that someone enjoyed the listen.
All the best to both of you,
Deej

Floyd,
Glad the song worked for you. Sorry about the drums. They are actually there, but dialed down. I think when I was mixing I lowered them then never quite raised them back up again. And I always get a bit worried the drums are too loud, so I tend to be conservative.
At any rate, I corrected it and re-posted the song. I also "comped" (and I use this term only because Bud taught me it) one of the licks I liked on the lead guitar so I could repeat it in both of the first two choruses. So, hopefully, it will sound a bit better now.
Regards,
Deej

Thanks, Noel, glad it worked for you--even without the drums!
See my note to Floyd above on the mix change--I've linked to the new version. I don't think of myself as a talented musician, but it's a very nice thing of you to say and for me to read. I'd prefer to think of myself as an aspiring musician--just try to keep learning and keep getting better.
Again, thanks for the kind words, and the link to the CLA plugins. I'll definitely have to check that out!
Best regards,
Deej

As fj often says "turn up the drums!" I was the same initially -- I had mixed bluegrass off and on for 30 years but had never worked with drums. Eventually from fj and listening to reference songs I learned that if you gonna have drums then HAVE DRUMS ! This is a strong write, performance and production and we liked that comped signature guitar lick. You are moving up that production ladder quickly! J&B

Thanks, Janice & Bud,
Appreciate the listen, support and advice. Actually, after a couple of listens I still didn't get the guitar licks right in the first and second verses, so I took another swing at it. It's now a little closer to what I've been wanting to hear when I play it--so reposted to SoundCloud and above. Wouldn't have had a prayer without your guidance--so thanks so much for that.
Regards,
Deej

Apart from "You were wrong, my dear, to ever leave" which is a very judgemental, it's a good start.

Deej,
I enjoyed your song as well. It does feel very 60's pop to me--not a bad thing, I liked that era. I did feel the same as Vic about the "you were wrong," it makes one feel this poor guy is in denial, which maybe he is. Most of us guys felt denial when our teen sweet-hearts broke up when it seemed the week before that they'd never ever leave! I don't miss those "fickle-hearted" days.......but I do miss my 20's!
Nice tune Deej, pleasant melody and nice performance!

Decaon, Rob B., Ricki, Vic and Eddie,
Thanks for stopping in and giving this one a listen—really appreciate the comments and support.
Vic and Eddie, regarding the lyrics: I understand your perspective on the line. It was born form the desire to establish an early internal rhyme. While it is judgmental, it seemed to me to fit the song and the singer’s perspective. That is, I wasn’t shooting for a conventional, sweet “we belong together” song—which rarely interests me. The guy’s a little angry, a little full of himself, and the fact he thinks they should get back together just because everyone says so, says a lot about him. So, Eddie, I’d agree he’s in denial.
That said, not sure if taking this approach works in a song or this one (and my explanation makes this seem a far deeper song than it really is, lol) —but it’s where it led and ended for better or worse. Appreciate the thoughtful comments from you both.
All the best,
Deej

Great to hear some music from you, Deej. Guitars totally rocks, and I love the vocals, sounds like a pro singer!
There are some elements that work a bit against each other in the mix, not quite sure what I'm hearing. It might be the riff gtr that is occasionally clashing with the harmony. Easily fixed.
Regarding levels, try starting out with everything about the same level when you mix, and go from there. Using the same starting point each time, may help you get the balances right.
Keep it up!

Hi Dee, Good production and strong vocals. No nits on the mix, however, I would back down on the reverb just a tiny bit with your vox. Enjoyed the listen Thanks.

What a good tune, I enjoyed it very much! I think some extra BU vocals would make this pop a lot, but that could be subjective. Good work

Kolstad, Iggy and L. James: Appreciate your taking the time to listen and comment.
Kolstad: Yeah, I’m still trying to work my way through adding guitar tracks and what I have here isn’t as perfect as I’d like. I’m guessing that’s what you’re hearing, though. Appreciate the tip on the mixing approach—I still have a lot to learn. :-)
Iggy: Nice call on the reverb—I was wondering if I may have overdone it. When I revisit it, I’ll turn it down a notch and see how it plays. Good call!
L. James: I have a few others suggest adding back-up vox—so you’re not alone. Something else to give more thought to!
All the best to each of you,
Deej

I enjoyed this a lot. You have a very distinctive voice and that adds character to the track. I think you're right that the lyrics fit the singer's perspective. It works for me anyway.

This is really catchy, Deej. Still hearing it after the song ended. And the title (vocal hook) is clever, memorable and sing-alongable.
Way to hit and hold those high notes!

Scott,
Thanks for the listen--really glad you enjoyed the song. I'm a little late chiming in on your album cover poll--but will get there to share my thoughts (though it seems you've already made a decision). Stay tuned.
All the best,
Deej
