Yup. Almost all my song writing has been when I was between girlfriends. (Which was damned often until I got married.)
It's hard when you have a full-time job and don't live alone. Raymond Carver said he only wrote short stories because he wasn't alone often enough to write novels. The closest he got to private time was sitting with his kids at the laundromat.
Someone once asked Alice Munroe why she went to an office every day to write. She said her kids didn't understand that when she was looking out the window she was working.

I suppose everyone's got their creative process. I'm definitely one of those people who likes being alone while creating too. That's why my most creative hours of the day are between 10 PM and the time I go to bed, which is around 2 AM most times.

Very interesting video. I can relate to what he is saying. I've experienced what he is saying in songwriting. If I get stuck in trying to finish a song, it is no good to force it to come, just leave it alone for a while, sometimes only a few minutes, sometimes hours, but when you go back to it, it just seems to be there what you were searching for before. You can't believe you didn't think of it before. I credit God for bringing it to my mind, all good comes from God.
Thanks Colin for the link to the video.

There is another side to all this, of course. I like to be alone when I write, but Raymond Carver wrote while watching his kids - at the laundromat, for instance. Eric Clapton has often sat working on his music while studio people bustle all around him. Harlan Elison sat typing in department store windows as a publicity stunt.

For me, they usually come all at once, and writing or typing them out is pretty much just taking dictation. After that, I spend a long time polishing - often a very long time - but the song is already there.

I enjoy solitude when I write. I worked nights for a few years, 3 to 11. by the time I got home everyone else was asleep. So I had a couple hours of peace and quiet. Perfect for writing. Then I had a trailer at a campground. When the kid got older he was busy on the weekends, so I'd go camping by my self. That was the best time for writing for me. One night I wrote 3 songs. Unfortunately, the next day only one made the final cut. The other two, I actually embarrassed myself listening to them.
