TABLES AND CHAIRS. Philosophy of life. Keep moving forward no matter what. Oh wait. I've already written that. Okay, I'm done. Finished and retired. MAB out! Peace.

That's a great question.
Being an amateur and hobbyist, I am free to write things that are important to me at an emotional level. Sometimes, I don't understand why they are important, but the emotions compel the songs. This question asks...what is the most important thing?
I don't have an immediate answer, but it is something that I'll enjoy pondering.

hmmm...
If I'm writing it's for myself, since I don't have an audience, I could write and die with the pen on the paper, and it wouldn't matter, nobody would hear it anyway.
Now, if I was famous, that brings extra baggage. Now I'm trying to write for everyone, as well as myself.
Ever notice how when a speech is delivered in front of a large crowd it changes the dynamic of the speech?
Or when u go to the movies, and if the movie is funny say, everybody in the theatre will be laughing out loud. But if u watched that same movie alone u probably wouldn't laugh much at all.
I feel that way about writing too.
Although they say greatness is what U do when no one is watching.
I find that hard to believe. When a baseball player is taking batting practice, physically it may be the same, but mentally it's worlds away from being in a real game, with real people watching.
Every writer deserves an audience, 99% of us will never have one. It be great if we could all make a living writing songs, and no pressure of paying bills to change our approach.
But in response to your question, my answer is more of a bucket list one.
What do I want to accomplish before my time.
At the moment, I'd say I'm way behind expectation.
I want to record at least one full length album. And do it well, something that could be played on radio or on beaches, or in malls etc, and especially in cars
Might cost 20 k or more, but I'd like it to be homegrown. Invite people from my past to play on it, or sing on it, or drum on it( I know at least ten drummers, I could call) Or draw the cover, and even the songs themselves that cover people I know or prototypes of people I've known
The goal would be to come full circle from when i first plugged in my Montoya sg , into my brothers stereo through the phono plugs in the back....God I miss radio shak!
But from then all the way till now.
Might have to be a double album, but I might call it FULL CIRCLE

Hmmn....
The question got me thinking. If I only had the energy for one last song before exiting this world, what would be that song? That depends on where I'm at hypothetically speaking in: life, location, time, and company.
My status in life would influence my thought process. Am I rich? Am I poor? Am I married with kids or single and alone?
My location would also play a part. Am I in my own home? Am I put IN a home? Am I in the mid-west, on a coast, island, different country, mountain?
The place in time. Has the world remained the same? What state of affairs is America in? What state of affairs is the world in? Are we in a state of peace? Are we at war?
The company I keep will influence my thought process as well. Who am I with?
And then all of this got me thinking......I know the title of the song. It would be called "End of the Road".
The song would be a celebration of life. It would be a toast to the memories made along the way. It would be inspire us all to reach the end and to run across the finish line. Because life is a sum of all its parts, from the beginning, middle, and the end. Life's a journey, not a destination....So when we do find ourselves at the "End of the Road", are we proud of who we are and where we've been or are you reflecting on a series of regrets on what could have been?
THAT would be my song I leave behind.
It is very much a song for me as it would be for everyone else because we will all reach the "End of the Road."
That's my two cents.

I may have already started the song, it just needs to be refined and updated--
The indians had me trapped in a mountain, panning for gold--I prayed that if the lord would somehow save me in my time of need, I could dig gold for him on a 50-50 split instead of 10% tithe--The mountain exploded and I got away weighted down with nuggets, thinking I had done well for HIM
I needed a heart bypass, after age had caught up with me--Going under the twilight needle, I had a dream about the deep spiral blue tunnel of life--down at the end was a camp fire, with VIKINGS sharpening axes, I heard them say THIS IS A BIG ONE--hone them sharp boys.
I prayed again for rescue to finish my digging outside heavens door--prayed for the lord to let me keep my mining tools close by, if heaven needed any digging done, I would be the one called!
The song, though not completed would be DIGGING AT HEAVEN'S DOOR--I realize Dylan already wrote KNOCKING ON HEAVEN'S DOOR!

An interesting thread, Barry:
I suppose the time remaining and the conditions endured would weigh heavily on what I would write. But I would hope it might consider the nobility of mankind, the love of my life, the memories I treasure and my hope for happiness for my children and their children. Many of us would consider, "I did it my way..." as a fitting tribute to the end of the road. Funny, we associate the song with Frank Sinatra... but I need to check and see who actually wrote it. Great song.
Happy trails, everybody.
P.S. - I did check. It appears the melody originated in France and was part of an entirely different song. Paul Anka heard it, received permission to use it in a re-write... and was granted that privilege. I had no idea that Sinatra was a friend... but they got together and Anka wrote a song with Frank in mind. The rest is history.

My Journey From There To Here....
Some great answers.....keep em coming. Too bad we all can't write one line to a song with a title and I would make it into a song. NOW that would be a JPF Song for sure....

Barry,.......don't give up the ghost, there has been far too much of that. Keep going, none of us know what our last song will be....none of us.
You're a prolific guy, so be prolific to the last day.
As with all y'all....just keep writing....period.
Some days I think it's over, and the next I'm writing again.....another tune for the pile. ......point is......keep going.
Three cents.

Title: "Famous Last Words."
Topic: I'd string together a bunch of famous last words, like "Either that wallpaper goes or I do," and "I wonder what this button does."

Barry, good question but I have what maybe a strange reply, with a story connected to my Helen to go with it. The last song that I would want to write, is the first song that I ever wrote, and I wrote that as a challenge. I met Helen originally, many many moons ago at a dance, and after a few dances I asked her 'what she did as a hobby', to which she replied 'that she was a songwriter'. Me being the cheeky person that I was, replied, 'anyone can write a song', and she challenged me to do that, by the following week, at the next dance. Having never written anything poetic before (except the occasional valentines poem', I set to thinking of a theme for my first song. I should say Lyrics really, because that's what we was talking about. In the end I thought, 'what if I was dying, and had nothing material to leave to my son, what could I leave him of value, to help him throughout his life. And I wrote 'Follow In My Footsteps'. Helen loved it, and after that we would write together. So the first song, was about what I would write if it was my last. I hope that this all makes sense to others. I added the talking bits years later and had it recorded in a demo studio.Hear are the lyrics and also links to sound click and youtube if anyone wants to have a listen. God Bless from me and Helen soundclick https://www.soundclick.com/bands3/default.cfm?bandID=992778&songID=8106856&content=songInfoyoutube https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=17&v=xQHg28kSZqQlyrics Copyright(c) Roy Cooper Its seems like yesterday, but it was over a half a lifetime ago. What my father said to me on his deathbed Has stayed with me and been the basis of my life. These were his words, as near as I can remember. -------------------------------- I have nothing to leave you my son, except my words. So come close and listen to what I have to say. My words my bond I cannot lie, I heard my father say, So listen son, before I die, And say you'll live this way. Do not take what isn't yours, Be both good and fair, And when you find you have too much, Then be prepared to share.
Follow in my footsteps, Walk in my shoes, When all around have lost their way, You'll know which path to choose.
Please my son, don?t cry so much, My pain is at an end, Just give my hand a gentle touch, Cause you are my best friend., Now take these words that I have said, Engrave them in your heart, Say you'll live the way I?ve asked For soon we'll have to part.
Follow in my footsteps, Walk in my shoes, When all around have lost their way, You'll know which path to choose.------------------------------------------- Well, I?m telling you now folk, That wise old man, Told me how to live, my life. That day I saw him die.

Nice. A bit of a Christian country feel to it. Good moral message with no preaching.

Wow. Roy those lyrics are beautiful. They made me cry. The story behind them is beautiful too.
in a bizarre coincidence, Mackie mentioned "Knocking on heavens door". I played "knocking on heavens door" for my wife on the first night we met. I can't say it was the first one and it wasn't the only one, but its the only song I remember.
great topic Barry. I only recently came up with an idea for a musical. it probably won't amount to anything, but it motivates me to not let these songs in my head die with me. it will be rude crude and offensife (but not necessarily in that order).
a very true observation Fdemetrio, the existence of an audience makes a world of difference. that is also why most teams do slightly better in home games than away games.
one thing to aim for, regardless of the audience size you write for, is to have atleast one person think "that song was written about me"
Well, the tears have left my cheeks and hit my belly. hmmm "tears on my big ol belly" doesn't sound that great, maybe "Tears on my keyboard" ? yes, that would be a much better song title.
