I am a lyricist in search for a musician to be a songwriting partner. I am offering to create one set of lyrics gratis for interested parties to test the waters, so to speak. If we can work up a good song, and we seem to get along well, we can go on to a traditional songwriting partnership with a traditional royalty arrangement.

Hi Michael:

Welcome to JPF. That is an interesting concept you've brought to the table. Finding someone compatible to work with is an uphill battle. Each of us have different objectives, work ethics, talents (or lack thereof) and other impediments to reveal and/or overcome. As they used to say in Medieval Times, "Expect a long siege!"... LOL!

I invite you to check out your competition by navigating down to the Lyrics forums below. There are two or three of them if my memory serves me... plus an MP3 forum for songs being "rolled-out" for comment. I've done many co-writes but actually prefer doing my own work on both sides of the ledger due to time and logistical constraints.

There is another option available if spending a few bucks is not a problem. We have several really talented demo artists who frequently have their work posted in the MP3 forum. I've used two of them and each cost about $50 bucks for one completed song. I don't know what the rest of them charge but as you develop friendships and people you trust here, ask around. Most of the songs posted via the method I've suggested for you to consider exploring, will list the name of the "hired gun" in the title.

I know this sounds like an odd approach to you but if you select a good demo artist, they can quickly get your best lyric "shoe-horned" into a great melody so you have something in your "repertoire" to display to others as you develop that all-important co-writing partnership. I'm not suggesting you seek a demo shop in Nashville, L.A. or elsewhere. Those demos will cost significantly more and many are hucksters.

The JPF member demo artist method I've suggested will save you a little time and you will still be "in-charge" of the project. (They are members here, just like you and me... and are not sponsored or offerred by JPF.) By this method, you control the purse-strings and need to be satisfied with the melody and vocal created by the individual you hire. Otherwise, you are going to experience a great deal of trial and error... which is the method most of us went through. Both are a learning process... and either method will work if both parties are compatible.

You didn't mention the genre's you prefer and that will be important for others to know.

Best of luck to you... and don't be shy. If you have questions... just ask. ----Dave

I prefer to just buy the lyric outright. Can I buy it from you? You can go sailing off into that great night, and I'll turn it into a hit

Buy the lyric outright? All the songwriting books advise against it, but I am compelled to ask what kind of money you would offer...

Sorry, Michael:

Your "leg has been pulled" by our "resident prankster." I hope you won't let this be an impediment in your relationship with JPF. Spend some time at the Lyric Forums and see how they roll.

All the best, ----Dave

How do you really sell your lyrics anyway? I have over a thousand of them. What happens once the deed is done?

Beechnut,

Nobody "buys" lyrics. They don't even "buy" songs. Not in some type of "outright sale." They purchase copies of songs, and now with "Streaming" people more want to LISTEN to them, not own them. So the entire "lyric for sale" is a moot point.

Most everyone now is a writer that does both. Very few "Just lyricists" or "Just composers." They might specialize in one or the other, but are mostly in co-write situations.

There are plenty of people who will "put your poems to music..." and "buy" something that way. It is mostly a scam.

Marketplace has changed dramatically and even the huge hit songs don't sell what they used to and definately don't PAY what they used to. When you have a song that gets HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF STREAMS, and pays less than a counter worker at McDonalds makes, you know individual lyrics are not really going to have much of a market.
If you want to "do something" with your lyrics. Find yourself a few artists, try to pair up in co-writing situations with your best ones. But understand you are going to have to craft your lyrics to fit what they want, and usually that means writing from scratch. You might have to consider your previous lyrics training to get you to the new songs with artists.

MAB

In love, business, and art, long-distance relationships are a drag. Find someone locally. Go to jams and open mics, get to know folks, and find a musician who you like, whose music has a sound that fits your style of writing, and who's interested in setting your lyrics it to music.
