Did you ever write a song that you LOVED but nobody else seemed to?
It's maddening....

Not sure how you would know if nobody else liked it.

Even the biggest songs of all time have many people who hate it. You have to assume that most people won't care either way, of what's left, half may like it, the other half not

Only takes about a 6 thousandth of one per cent of the worlds population to like it enough to buy it and you have a hit.
The hard part is reaching them. crazy

It's never too late? Yes it is, so do it now.

If, given time, a monkey can write the complete works of Shakespeare maybe there's hope for me.

Probably.

I have one not yet released into the wild as yet that my wife said is "cute" once. Unsolicited.
That's probably not good.

For some reason "Achy Breaky Heart" comes to mind. If I ever hear it again I'll puke. But millions loved it. Don't try to figure it out it will give you a headache.

There are so many variables, and myriads of personalities. We live in a culture that treat doctors like God and sometimes lawyers as a scourge (till you need one) and neither is really true. We as a society, are enamored by fame yet usually ignore our neighbors--not all folks mind you. Believe me Barry, if someone of "fame" and bigger than life recorded one of your best songs--it would be liked by perhaps millions. Its hard for the lay person to "believe" that "we" have written a song that could perhaps be produced more professionally and be competitive with mainstream artist's that they hear on the radio etc. However, we can get lucky! Here's another corollary. I traveled as a medical rep for many years calling on doctors in big towns, little towns, and cities. I can't tell you how many times I've heard from office staff how "their doctor" was extremely renowned and considered one of the "best" in the country or state." I always wanted to reply back by saying, "Gee Wally, I've always heard that the guy in the town down the road was the best!"

Labels promote and manufacture "stars" because they know that we as a society will be enamored by them. Popular songwriting has become almost as common as being a carpenter.........now that's a stretch for really good songwriters perhaps. As songwriter colleagues, we can appreciate each other a bit more, as most of us are in the same boat and see the industry from both sides unlike the enamored listeners who have and enjoy their fantasy stars. I get it, I was and still am enamored by some. I know I digressed a bit from your topic, but a related avenue.

What I do like most about your songs Barry, is that you are passionate, and generally speaking always have a good melody--and for me, melody gets my initial attention, which then gets me to listen.....

steady-eddie (Thank-you John, I see you tipping your hat at me)!

Hi Gang:

These days, we all have opinions. Barry, I understand exactly what you are saying. The truth has been posted on this thread by so many wise song-writers and composers... and I don't think I've reached their level yet. We can't let "failure of instant stardom syndrome" deter us from our chosen direction. Sure, I get "down" and threaten (very quietly in my inner-sanctum) to "chuck it all" and do something more productive. The "Honest to God Truth" is... we are addicts of our own internal muses and the only escape will be a wooden box or floating Viking pyre. LOL!

Only one thing matters' (IMHO) That's when, late at night after you've turned-in, dimmed the lights and turn on your CD player with your favorite songs (yours included)... if they please you... that's all that matters. Fame is fleeting. Life is short. Enjoy every minute. ----Dave

Perhaps Barry is gauging his feedback from this site. That is the only limited way of knowing if anyone likes it. If you want people to "like" your song, tell them you like there's.

I read a study one time about people going on interviews for jobs, and the results. Not surprisingly, beautiful women, got the job more than what was considered plain.

The others were told to compliment the interviewer. "Say, is that a picture of your family?" What beautiful children you have....

The butt kissers got the jobs, more than neutral. They also said, that even if the interviewer knew they were buttering them up, they couldn't resist being the recipient of butt kissing. It works on forums too, but is it productive?

By the way Barry, your songs make me feel as if I'm listening to music for the first time. Your melodies thrill me and make me feel alive...

Btw did you listen to my song? http://www.jpfolks.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/1139478/the-track.html#Post1139478

Ha, ha -- I actually think that Achy Breaky Heart is a pretty well written and fun tune: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=byQIPdHMpjc

You can tell the world you never was my girl
You can burn my clothes up when I'm gone
You can tell your friends just what a fool I've been
And laugh and joke about me on the phone
You can tell my arms go back to the farm
You can tell my feet to hit the floor
Or you can tell my lips to tell my fingertips
They won't be reaching out for you no more

But don't tell my heart
My achy breaky heart
I just don't think he'd understand
And if you tell my heart
My achy breaky heart
He might blow up and kill this man

You can tell your mom I moved to Arkansas
You can tell your dog to bite my leg
Or tell your brother Cliff whose fist can tell my lip
He never really liked me anyway
Or tell your Aunt Louise, tell anything you please
Myself already knows I'm not OK.
Or you can tell my eyes to watch out for my mind
It might be walking out on me today

But don't tell my heart
My achy breaky heart
I just don't think he'd understand
And if you tell my heart
My achy breaky heart
He might blow up and kill this man

Songwriters: Donald L. Von Tress

I agree with Kevin, Achy Breaky Heart is such a FUN tune.

Mr Schick, you need to get out more, even wear cowboy boots ? Maybe the Stetson too ? Just don't go anywhere that doesn't have chicken wire across the stage. grin

Barry, yeah, I've had a few which I thought were "artistically brilliant" but apparently were just noise. So what ? Don't like It ? Turn it off. Simple. smile

cheers, niteshift

It was originally called Achin Breakin Heart and He didn't want to sing or record it AND the rest is history. So many mysteries in life and then it's over.....

Yeah, I got one like that. I thought it was a great song, but I didn't produce it right and got overambitious with polyrhythms and instruments that clashed with each other. That's all anybody could hear. It got negative comments from my peers and a low score on Audiokite. I finally had to give up on it.

Much of it seems like luck of the draw.

But I would like to believe that songs that people do for themselves are more endearing than what is done for the market. Though the market often will have the final say.

My experience has been that someone will always like your song. But, if no one in an audience, say of 30 or 40 people listening do not like it, you gotta problem smile My jazzy tunes don't appeal to any majority, but those who are into my niche like them, that's about all I can ask for. Unfortunately, it's not enough to make a living by.

If it's maddening to you, think how the people you play it to feel!

But seriously, I know what you're going through. Here's how I've solved it:

- When I'm alone, I play any of my songs I feel like playing. But when I'm with other people, I've learned (the hard way) to stick to the ones that get good responses.

- I don't subject people to anything that describes my feelings. No one cares, and it's none of their business, anyway. I might describe how the character in the song feels, but I leave myself out of it.

- I don't play preachy songs. I'm not holier than thou, so when I pretend to be, it sounds phony.

- I stick to the songs I know well enough to play well. If it's not up to speed yet, I hold off on inflicting it on others.

- I remember that just because one song doesn't get a good response, it doesn't mean the next one won't. So I just keep cranking them out..

Those three practices keep me out of trouble. (Usually!)

That song became a big hit because it fit it with the whole line dancing craze that was so popular at the time.

Achy Breaky heart was done by a great performer, the dancing, the video.

It's fun, there's no law that says a song can't be fun. It should be fun.

There are so many different songs and ways to make an impact.

Stupid songs have been favorites for a long time.

If you have a beat, a catchy melody, a strong hook, and a great performance and production, you can get it done.

If you have all that stuff right, then it IS good, just not a classic kind of good.

Yup! Shep Woolley. I play it sometimes. A crowd pleaser, and It rocks.

Just Plain Quotes
"Sometimes reaching a goal earlier than planned is a great achievement. It shows you have worked hard, pushed ahead and made it happen. However, sometimes reaching a goal far past your original deadline, long after you wanted to complete it, and after the accolades you might once have gotten for the achievement are over, it is an even greater achievement. This shows you never gave up, due to adversity, deficit, criticism and those little life detours that end many dreams and goals. In many ways, this is a reason for even more pride!" -Brian Austin Whitney
