It has been a while since I've been to this site, but as in life, some things never change. People want to be recognized, appreciated, AND compensated for their creative efforts.
The classic way to 'make it big' for "just a songwriter" was to move to Nashville, New York or L.A. and work to build relationships with industry shakers and movers, or performers on the rise. This took lots of hard work, or the stars had to align perfectly for you. Since tightly controlled distribution is a thing of the past, it is harder than ever to be successful using the old methods, although they still exist in a much abbreviated form.
If you want the Cadillacs, rhinestone suits and award show accolades, may good fortune come your way. If you want to make a little money for your efforts, take control of your distribution!
Oh, and if I might quote MAB a bit, "Don't quit your day job"! You will need a few bucks to produce CD's for selling. (yes, people still buy CD's)
Nothing will take the wind from your creative sails like years of rejection and disappointment, so set reachable goals. They will keep you going.
1. Perform your songs yourself at any venue you can that will pay you or allow you to pass a tip jar or set up a CD table.
2. Set up a table at craft fairs or festivals with a sound system and play your music and offer your CD's.
3. Find a local or regional talent/band to include your songs when they are performing and will let you sell CD's.
4. Consign your CD's at a local music store, hey, any store that will take a box of your CD's.

The problem is nobody buys or wants cd's any more, the physical product is gone, so there's nothing to sell, aside from yourself performing

I did buy a cd from an irish group on St Patricks Day, they were fantastic btw. I was surprised how good their songs were.

I haven't listened to the cd, but let me give these guys a plug. https://store.cdbaby.com/cd/shilelaghlaw1

And if you are going for the RHINESTONES look, be prepared for every shark and con man in the world coming to separate you from your money. Because it proves you are 30 years behind the times and are willing to do anything to get your music "out there." Save yourself the trouble, put a "rip me off" bullseye on your back, and hang hundred dollar bills out of your pocket.

That stuff went away a long time ago.

Something that was pretty funny about the reviews of last nights CMT awards, were that people who have never been here before remarked about the "stars driving their own cars and pick up trucks, parking themselves and then walking the red carpets. They didn't use big limos. The main reason is they only live a few miles from where the awards are. The second is all those limos get CHARGED BACK TO THE ARTIST. So nobody wants to pay for them.

We're kind of different down here.

MAB

Marc some artists dont like being driven around or followed by bodyguards. Like The Boss, he spent most of his recording career talking about getting out of New Jersey, now he
still lives here, in a bigger house with a farm, but still within minutes from where he grew up. He can be spotted "somewhere in the swamps of Jersey" like he sings in Rosalita

Recently made news when some vets saw him stranded on his Motorcycle
