I guess Rhapsody in Blue is the greatest piece if music I ever heard.
I LOVE Broadway and would LOVE to be able to write songs for a Musical.

I don't think it gets much better than Andrew Lloyd Webber for musicals

I guess The Who's Tommy qualifies as a musical,so I might take the whole show as my favorite. So many great songs.

Oooh, I adore 'Rhapsody in Blue'. And I love 'Memory' from the musical 'Cats'. And for sure, pretty much anything by Andrew Lloyd Weber. Such melodies...

Some years ago in Australia I saw a live performance (by the Negro Theater Ensemble) of an all-black revue show from the late 1920s. It was called 'One Mo' Time'. The songs were wonderful - and some were wonderfully naughty. wink

My dream would be to write lyrics for a musical. Sigh...

Ok we have a lyricist, and a melody writer.

Just need what the musical will be about.

How bout a musical about social media.

U have a fake social media site name, u have various users, and their posts are the lines spoken. And songs based on the ideas presented. Maybe one song about a single mom raising her kids by herself and talking about it in social media. Another about a guy who is just trying to pick up women.

Could be endless things

I don't think we have a musical about a social media platform, could be time for one.

Ok guys u got your topic, now make it happen! If it goes anywhere I expect front row seats....

Enjoyed most of the songs from Oklahoma... but we were gifted with so many great Musicals. Bloody Mary from South Pacific... and Bali Hai... were memorable.

Memorable for sure, Dave. I don't know if it's my imagination, but I wonder whether melodies of the past were - in general - more memorable? More...well...melodious?

In the past year or so I've seen a couple of musicals (films), and once I'd left the cinema I couldn't recall any of the melodies. And yet I can still hum - or even sing whole songs - of melodies from some of the films that have been mentioned (and many others not mentioned).

Mind you, I've not seen Les Miserables or Phantom of the Opera, etc., but I am familiar with a handful of the songs. Gorgeous for sure.

Or maybe it's because when one is younger, one identifies more with the characters or the themes? Maybe a question for a social anthropologist. wink

Probably I just need to see more of the modern musicals. wink

Since I have never seen a Broadway Show I don't know. But I have seen The Nutcracker so maybe THE WALTZ OF THE FLOWERS.

Forgive me for being tardy, Donna:

I think you are 100% correct about musicals from the bygone era (my era, LOL!) being more melodious. I'm sure there are plenty of more modern musicals with some great songs... but they certainly don't seem to be as plentiful as those from earlier times.

It's a bit strange that I remember many of those musicals more fondly now than I did when younger. A social anthropologist would probably end up jumping off a tall bridge or building after studying what makes me "tick" musically! My only excuse is that our "tastes" for music and food really do change as we grow older... even though I could not prove it if my life depended upon it!

Gotta admit... the theme-song from Phantom of the Opera gets my attention. It is one of those melodies that appear to be workable in several tempos and musical styles. Much like so many of the Beatle's Melodies. What would we do without music?

Rhapsody in Blue is one of my very favorites. It paints such vivid pictures in my mind of different portions of New York. The cars, the traffic, the majestic buildings, the rats in the sewers, its all there.

I remember my parents playing lots of the musicals on the record player. I remember liking almost all the songs of Music Man and Oklahoma. Others I can't think of now but will kick myself later for forgetting.

I liked to listen to "Little Tin Box" from Theorello so much, my parents actually found a small tin box that had been made into a piggy bank and gave it to me.

Memories from Cats brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. I may have to take steps to avoid it in the future as time and aging are making the theme really hit close to home.

Fiddler on the Roof ! Sound of Music.

That is more than a Song as it is a freaking Genius Symphony.....Never heard anything like it before or after. I loved West Side Story also.....Gershwin left us way too soon. I wonder what kind of songs he would be writing today?
