Nearing the end of my Bradbury project. These last few have a little bit different feel from the ones I've posted so far because they represent a later time - like late teens.

This one is just about the joy of getting together with friends and playing music.

A Far Away Guitar is here:

https://youtu.be/62chR6PRXYQ

Lyric is below. Thanks for listening smile

Scott

A Far Away Guitar
Lyric and music (C) 2018 by SW Campbell

We watched the needle move through the vinyl groove
Probably for the dozenth time
We’d already worked out the chords
Now we were trying to write down all the words
So we could run downstairs to the basement where
The acoustics took us far
And add the song to our repertoire
I swear I still hear the sound of that faraway guitar

Barre chords, finger picking, hammer-ons
We learned them all in time
Making riffs up on the fly
Wearing our calluses with pride
And it wasn’t about girls, well maybe some
But it wasn’t about being a star
It was the joy of singing our throats raw
I hear us singing to the sound of that faraway guitar

Now time and chance have left us scattered ‘cross the states
And we’ve more years behind us than in front
But we still within us the soundtrack of those days
And we can play it any time we want

A long hard day, nothing went my way
I crack a beer and grab my axe
Strum the strings and begin to croon
An old familiar Dylan tune
And a thousand miles away I know you’re doing the same
Except it’s Kiss or Neil Young
I guess a thousand miles is not too far
For me to smile at the sound of a faraway guitar

Hey Scott,

I think they'll be a lot of fellas on this site relate to this'n. Nice job all round with a great concept. I really love the harmonica solo, but maybe a fender playing with a lot of reverb in the distance would reflect the song title better--not that is necessary, but might be cool. Enjoyed this, and definitely related to the lyrics. I remember showing off my calluses!

Hi Scott:

I really enjoyed my listen. Who can't "relate" to this well written song? I hope someone Rich and Famous decides to beg for this one for their next album... and it makes you "Rich and Famous!" Thanks for sharing. ----Dave

Funny, a couple years ago a former bass player in one of my high school bands emailed me and another guy with demos he found. God awful, and the acoustics were NOT great at all. The first time we recorded on reel to reel was when we first sounded like something.

We had some talented players, we could actually sing harmony and knew more than three chords, but the sound was never there.

I can relate to this tune, my tune woulda been more garage rocky but I can relate.

Btw, girls? The biggest fallacy of playing an instrument is that girls like it. What they actually like is guys in SUCCESFUL bands, who also fit their own criteria.

Yeah, guys were writing songs about women that clearly didn't exist. Your tune certainly brought back memories

Scott,

You’re right—it’s got a little different feel, but there’s still a connection to the earlier tunes; a related sound. The lyrics are your usual rock solid and very relatable, as others have noted. Kind of a bitter sweet tune; a sad, but fond look back at younger days. Just a fine, fine listen.

Kindest regards,

Deej

Scott,

Man! you really captured that moment in time well. Good write. A good listen.

You brought back all those delightful hours of sitting in front of that record playing picking up the needle over and over to learn the songs of our youth.

Thanks for the memories...

Hi Scott.
Brought back a few. I also remember struggling to carry equipment on busses and trains before the luxury of a bandwagon and, oh yeah, the arguments. :-)

Vic

It's never too late? Yes it is, so do it now.

If, given time, a monkey can write the complete works of Shakespeare maybe there's hope for me.

A song about playing guitar - brilliant!

Good effort all the way around. The production is nice and smooth sounding.

Nicely done
It amazing how consistent you are creatively.
Still in awe of your harp playing
Loved the video also
If you go back in to edit anything, I would love to see a filter on that last scene.

Something with that seventies washed out colors and sun spots... especially when the camera is moving away at the end.

Another brilliant piece, Scott.

Scott, you had me at, "We watched the needle move through the vinyl groove". Some fine playing and great production. While I can't necessarily relate to being in a band, the over all feel of those years is here in my own memories. I wish I was still in touch with some of those people. A really fine batch of song you've created. Again! smile Nicely done.

Thanks Deej. Glad it doesn't seem out of place with the others. smile

Ain't that the truth. Now you can Google any song and get the lyric. Back then, it took some elbow grease. Glad it gave you some good memories, Floyd.

Lol I don't know why but we never got into any arguments. Probably because the stakes were so low. grin

Thanks, Dave. My daughter asked me why I change clothes and I told her it's so I can tell from the thumbnail of the video which part it is. smile

Glad you could relate.

If you go back in to edit anything, I would love to see a filter on that last scene.

Something with that seventies washed out colors and sun spots... especially when the camera is moving away at the end.

Another brilliant piece, Scott.

Thanks, Nelson. That's a good idea on the filter. I'll mention it to my producer. I probably didn't give as much attention to the last verse as I should have, as she really had me focused on getting the guitar isolated in color on the first two verses. Have to admit she forced me to learn some new stuff though. smile

A really fine batch of song you've created. Again! smile Nicely done.

Thanks Ricki. Worked out for me that move rhymes with groove. smile It's a funny thing - there's a lot of songs I don't remember when I try to play them by myself. But when I get together to play with my old pals, they come back instantly!
