Rewind Me -- VideoAudio OnlyHi folks, We don’t hear much reggae here and thought you might like to check out one of our efforts at it -- we've attempted 4-5. FWIW, this is another song that was recently licensed by Mood Media. Again, ya never know what these companies are gonna like I wrote this as a 12 bar blues (lyric/chords) format forJanice to experiment with - vocally and with her new cajon. The production started much more bluesy, then became an acoustic version and finally settled with this funky wah wah version thanks to our friend Peter who played guitars on it. Maybe reggafunkblues? Thanks to all who take their time to listen and comment. We greatly appreciate you! Production details for those so inclined: I took the reggae drum track and removed all of the kick drum and most of the snare leaving primarily the ride and timbale. Janice then filled in with the cajon “kick,” “snare” and other sounds. She is new to the cajon and I’m new at attempting to mic and mix the thing but it was an interesting project. BTW, we added the handclaps to emphasize that important reggae third beat. I certainly don't mean to imply that we know much about reggae but we had fun Janice: vocal and cajon (Mein) Peter: lead and rhythm guitars Bud: production, engineering and mixing Stuff used: Band-in-a-Box, Logic Pro X, Alloy 2, Ozone 7, Waves TruVerb, Nectar 2, Rodes mic, MXL mic and Focusrite interface Handclaps: Bud, Janice and loops Rewind Me © 2016 Bud & Janice Merritt Baby please forget that stop button You don't need to hit that button don't want money, don’t need a mansion Just hit pause before it's too late Yeah hit pause before it's too late Come on now doncha hesitate I feel like I've been on fast forward Yeah too long on fast forward Slow it down, you know my password Rewind me, take me back in time Rewind me, take me back in time Back to when you were all mine

Remarkable... and I usually don't care for reggae... LOL! So much talent in so many directions on this number... and I'm not surprised someone licensed it. It goes without saying, Jan's vocal is awesome. Thanks for sharing, Bud... and the mix is darn near perfect. ----Dave

Janice and Bud,
I really like the song, but to me, IMHO, it sounds like a blues song trying to be a reggae song. I mean, you capture the reggae vibe with some of the instrumentation, I’m just not sure it transforms it enough, and for me, it’s somewhat distracting. Thing is, this would be killer played straight up blues. And I’d love to hear a version in that vein.
Obvously, all of the above is just my subjective opinion—and I am for more often wrong than right—so take it with a big boulder of salt. And it's still a good listen on its own regardless.
All the best,
Deej

I have to say that I am not a reggae or 12 bar fan so don't feel qualified to comment but this is a fun example of blending both. Production is balanced nicely but personally, I think the kick drum needs to come back.
Always interesting stuff from you two.

Hey J & B,
Well when I hear a song that's a hybrid, got to listen a few times to really feel it. I think anytime you become progressive in any genre--you invite feelings of uncertainty--as the normalcy expected has altered the anticipation. I remember when my friend and I would buy the "next" Beatle album as teens, especially after 1966 and look at each other when listening--"What the?" It didn't take long however and it became contagious. The Doors IMO, were one of the most Avant Garde bands of that era next to the Beatles, and in their "own" way--I always couldn't wait to hear what the next album would sound like.
I'm on my 2nd listen, and it would be hard......not to enjoy Janices's vocals no matter the song. In fact, I'd like to hear "her" cover version of the Beatle song, "Oh Darling!" Just think of how that might sound slowed down and Bluesy? I like what I'm hearing here, claps and all--makes me envision a gospel choir standing behind her swaying and all clapping--maybe throw in a soulful choir in the outro?
I really dug this, great production/performance--the expression "rewind" is phonetically just a great Blues expression!

Vic Hey guys, thanks for listening and taking the time to comment. Yep, it's a genre mashup for sure. I suspect that had it been "hard" blues or reggae Mood Media would not have licensed it. But it wasn't done with them in mind and what the heck do I know? Deej said: "Obvously, all of the above is just my subjective opinion—and I am for more often wrong than right..." No worries. And what the heck is wrong or right when it comes to what we do? Vic said: "I think the kick drum needs to come back" But then Janice could't have played her new percussion toy! We appreciate y'all, J&B

steady-eddie Thank you Eddie for the thoughtful comments. We feel your insight into the notion of "hybrid" is really thought provoking. It's a great description of how we do tend to act. I was the same way about the Beatles albums. I was in the Tampa area with a band I was working with when Sgt Peppers came out. We bought the record and gathered around for a listen and definitely were mystified by it all. Cool idea about "Oh Darling" done bluesy! Thanks again! J&B I'm a blues fan and reggae in small portions but this was outstanding Classy vocal great production J&B Travis Thanks Travis...glad the mashup worked for you. J&B

Thanks! As with all our productions my wife, Janice, is singing. Glad you noticed the delivery as I thought she nailed that loosey goosey relaxed reggae feel - particularly given that we’ve only done four reggae songs over the years. And she also is very flattered that you mentioned one of our fav singers - Bonnie. Thanks again! Bud

Masterful job Bud. I really enjoyed Janice's vocal presentation on this one. Like how she draws it out here: "Just hit pause before it's too late Yeah hit pause before it's too late" .....very cool.
Like that wah wah and the organ throughout
Sounds like yall had a ball.

Love the reggae feel. Tremendous as always. Vocal stellar. Production fantastic. Is there a genre you cannot master? I haven't heard it yet. Love the clean way guitar. Everything about this is incredibly pleasing to the ear. But like always it is the vocal that rises above all else. I would love to hear Janice cover Bonnie Raitt. Can I find one anywhere?
Great one J & B
