Not sure if I should include the earnings I made with "streaming". Doing my taxes today. Well, H&R Block will be helping. laugh I didn't receive any W2's for such earnings. Maybe the Internet is tax free on streaming??? Don't know.

Best, John smile

Hi John:

I suspect the grubby hands of Government will reach into your wallet one way or another. Jody Whitesides is our resident expert on all things streaming and may be able to offer some real advice.

One thing is certain, income... no matter the source... is a good thing for music creators... and you are one of the best.

Salud... ----Dave

Thanks Dave! I would think the publishers involved would have to send me a W2 or something. Yeah Jody probably knows. Not sure if H&R Block would know. Also I'm wondering if I can take off the foreign taxes withheld. Kind of complicated.

Eh, Well,
They should have sent you a 1099-something. If they didn't don't sweat it. They may send you a statement next year or not. Until then enjoy life and be happy!

This is why you get a CPA that is versed in Entertainment and Music.

As far as income from streaming, are you referring to the master royalty, the writer's, the publisher's or the performer's royalties you've earned? Because its different in the case of each.

W-2 is for employees. A 1099 is for royalties as well as any fishing boat proceeds you might have racked up during the year smile

Hey Gavin! Hmm... I'm an employee of the publishers that are responsible for the streaming.

In the words of the Fonz, Correct-a-mundo! Since using the ASCAP Onstage thing from 2014 to now, I've been getting 1099's for writing and publishing royalty income; not a lot of bucks, mind you, but better than what I made for songwriting pre-2014: zero. heheheheh. Oh, yeah....for some time now, I've been making/saving yearly lists of gear purchases/sales, home office gear/supplies, CD Baby royalty income as well as ASCAP royalty income for tax works.

I pay 30% to the US government for any money I make from CCLI and I have no way of claiming it back. I still have to show it as earnings on my Canadian tax form.

For the writing you would be getting that as part of your year end 1099 from your PRO.

For the performers, you'd be getting that from SoundExchange.

Sounds like you don't own the masters.

You'd likely pay less in taxes and have more write-offs with a proper CPA who knows the business.

Yes, I do own masters and get the 1099 streaming through ASCAP. But there's money besides ASCAP that I get directly from some publishers for these type plays: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYIWV4soDKFuBER09xaIIaw/videos (which ASCAP doesn't cover). My taxes are pretty much cut & dry other than this Internet streaming question I have (which only constitutes 1K of my total earnings anyway).

Thanks for your info Jody.

Best, John smile

If you're collecting the publishing directly yourself via ASCAP - then ASCAP would be paying you a 1099 for your publishing. Otherwise if the publisher is paying you for those streams, then they would be 1099'ing you. If you're collecting the master/publishing yourself, you have to report that income appropriately.

Since it wasn't a large amount, it was just added to my other music earnings. Didn't make much difference in the overall taxable amount/ refund.
