Things are getting close on the final songs for "Call Me Brother." The director has been editing songs to picture to see which ones work best. After our conversation yesterday, he is going to give me a major update on Sunday. If any JPF songs are selected, I will let each of you know.
As I mentioned above, I will most likely have some slots that are still open. I will get new direction from the director and post an updated music brief and start the second round of submissions.
Best!

I have finally received an update from the director. He has made tentative selections on 20 of the 27 cues. Unfortunately, none of the 20 cues were from JPF submissions.
I said tentatively because the director is letting the writer/producer and female lead (Lisa) watch the film with the new cues edited in the film. There's a chance she might was some changes so until I get the overall final word, things are tentative.
I will be starting round 2 sometime next week. We are going to have another creative meeting to discuss the last seven cues. I will post an update shortly after the meeting.

I just opened up Round 2 of the "Call Me Brother" submissions. I have a super short deadline of next Tuesday, 03/06 to have songs received in time for the director to listen to and make his final decisions. Check back often as I may be making edits to the music brief "on the fly" as the director hears things and might want to give additional updates to each song description of what he's wanting for these last few cues. Please follow the instructions I posted in the original post and access the music brief in the 2nd bullet point in the Submission Details. You can also visit the Projects page on my website for the same information. Good luck and I really hope this round will produce a JPF song making it into the film.

Hi Dom:
I viewed the video clip from your original post and was really disappointed at the lack of substance in this project. I believe the director would do himself a service if he found meaningful work... and I don't mean in the film industry. I found it highly offensive, mentally meaningless and pretty darn disgusting. I don't mind comedy that skates around the edges a bit... but this was so grossly over the top... I would not want my name or my music associated with it. I know you have to make a living but surely, there are some quality films being brought up through the indie ranks that will blow this miserable excuse away.
Please keep films that tend to bring mankind out of the mire of lewdness in mind for at least a few of us here at JPF. Thanks for opening the door for us in future opportunities but I'll pass on this one.
Regards, ----Dave

There are tons of movies that had little to no substance, you're not going to change that Dave. Remember Meatballs and Porky's and Spring Break, I do t watch cheese much any more, I'm more of a history channel guy, but cheese in movies are nothing new.
And I beg to differ, if somebody were to offer you several thousand dollars for one of your songs In this film, your giving them your song... Lol, and then saying, what a fun movie it is.
It's easy to reject something when not much is at stake.
I think the song playing in the background raises the bar in the movie, making it appear bigger than it actually is.
But I agree with you, I hate the characters already, and It shows the breakdown of the American family, maybe that was the intent.
But anybody looking for an acting gig, or a music licensing gig, or a gig in the business could do a lot worse than getting in this project, it's a start
You can always prepare the cheese a new way, next project

Hi Fdo:
I thought about "speaking my mind' for a long time before I decided to post something that might be perceived as negative in today's world. Then I remembered Auschwitz and Berkenau. What if someone had taken time to say something before "things got out of hand?" The "culture" in which I was raised was that of keeping a low profile, offering a hand-up to those in need and generally practicing the Christian principles our Country was founded on. Did "blue" movies and media exist back then? Sure. They were sold under the counter at places for "those in the know." But nobody proudly depicted such behavior as mainstream.
You are correct! By myself, I am not going to change a thing. If my five friends take up the issue and state their opinion... then each of them influence five others... things and ideas have a way of growing.
As far as participating in a project "of this flavor"... to each his own, said the old lady as she kissed the cow! Please note that I said nothing intending rebuke to Dom. He is trying to make a living in a culture that has forgotten it's history. My loss!
Thanks for sharing your opinion. ----Dave

Well Dave, the world has gone to hell. Most people who share their Christian beliefs get made fun of or even shunned. The Internet has made most people believe they are smarter than everyone else, therefore anti Christian sentiments are thriving on line.
Again, I beg to differ, blue movies were always popular when I was a kid, and are still being made, sometimes a terrible movie can make money with the promo saying how cool it is.
Having said that, yeah you did throw a blanket of doubt over this guy and his project. How can he suddenly summon up a movie in which needs music, that he may consider music from this site, while at the same time making sure that the movie fits your moral compass?
I'd consider myself lucky to have one of my songs in any big movie, regardless if the movie was to my liking or not. Let's face it, there are not that many options in this business.
For me, my own album? Yes, I'd do it my way, under my terms, write what moves me....may not make a dime either. But for me to give a song to a movie that I'm not crazy about, is a no brainier.
As I said there are a lot worse things to be represented by.
That's like saying if they make w movie about a serial killer, you won't want your music in it. Would that mean you like the serial killer? Or you like the violence in the movie? No I do t think so
Short of writing music for a porno, I think I'd do it, but then again if somebody offered me 100k for one of my songs to be used as a theme for a porno, I'd probably take it. I can always tell people I never saw the movie...because I didn't agree with the cinematography.
To me it sounded a little unfair to our friend here, we shouldn't be shocked a movie like this is made, but how bad is it? Mother cussing at her daughter, some weird characters? I mean, I had friends in high school who when I went over their house would be cussing at their parents and vica versa.
I'd be like man if I ever said that to my dad he woulda knocked me out literally, and he was not a mean guy by any stretch.
And don't forget, Christian recording artists make alot of money singing about God. And I'm willing to bet that if you ran into one of them, and in need, they wouldn't lift a hand to help you.
I went to Catholic school. I see where your coming from, but this type of movie is constantly being made, they can make money

Guys,
If you didn't like the clip/film, why spend a single moment posting or submitting? With half the US screaming to censor everything said by the other half (and their own more and more often) the last message the creative community should be sending is to curtail someone else's speech/art (a film is both) because you don't like it or even that it offends you. What a horrible way to respond. This is a super low budget film... common sense should tell anyone that it's likely an entry level effort. It would be like a new writer looking for help with their album with no budget, you'd likely not expect the work to be top notch but if you decided to offer to help on the album it would be ridiculous to complain about it not meeting your standards for any reason and really inappropriate to openly attack it. It's really disappointing to read some of the comments. If you aren't interested, move along... perhaps there's a baby seal you can club elsewhere.
There are plenty of people who would be happy to get a film credit, let them get their chance and wish them well.

Yep, Brian.
And, work is work. Experience is a good thing, no matter what level one starts out at.
Hi Dave: If not liking sugar donuts, don't go into a donut store and complain about all the sugar. It's going to be there. Let others who enjoy sugar stand in line without others complaining about the sugar! haha!
I once scored a short film where the student director hadn't a clue about all kinds of meaning which music could bring, even contrast spotting of a scene. BUT, I did it anyway, for the experience and the few bucks I needed. (The director later decided to use her best friend's flute playing through the whole Russian Gulag Prison film! Ha! BUT, I still had fun, some money, and the experience, besides the rough cut tape I had done back home with our score. (Buddy Holcombe helped spot some scenes and helped with other related suggestions).
I would welcome a Porn Director's request to have me score and play music in a "film"?! Need the money and added FUN! hahaha

Then again, I had a song in what was once quoted as "the worst movie of all time" on IMDb. 😆 Though I'm sure there are many films that have been called that - It got me a lot of young fans, so I'm not complaining.

The worst thing I found my music in was an episode of "Mr. Pickles". A perverted cartoon. So, I won't take the high road here. I'd like to think my music lifted “Pickles” decency level a bit. I’d post a link to the episode, but I might get kicked off JPF for posting it. John

Each of you should choose your own path. I cannot choose for you... but I am thankfully free to voice my opinion regarding morality from my perspective. That is why I served my country and did my best to contribute to society when I had a regular "day job."
Condemn me if you must... it is your right... but you should remember... if you live in what is now the United States... it was once an English Colony founded on the principles of morality and decency... the basic tenets of Christianity. I do not profess to be much of a Christian. That is a difficult path to follow... but I do my best to behave. Our coins still proudly state: In God We Trust!
What I think I implied was... if you see something "wrong" (as I believe that movie clip was)... you have an obligation to say something. If not, welcome to Sodom and Gomorrah.
Take my opinion for what it is worth... and if it is worth nothing to you... so be it!

Hmmm, don't know who's counting, but I saw one commenter on the subject.
I had and still have the guys back, the comments were not on target and I thought the fact that he even asked this group was a nice gesture.
I didn't even submit, I don't think my recordings are good enough quality, but I would allow my song in this, I'm not above this, and I don't think it's that raunchy to begin with. Not in the Kardashian fueled media world we live in,
Actually, I know a guy who had a song in the Kardashians show. He might have had the same reservations, but I never heard any

Condemn me if you must... it is your right... but you should remember... if you live in what is now the United States... it was once an English Colony founded on the principles of morality and decency... the basic tenets of Christianity. Who's condemning you? Brian didn't condemn you. I didn't condemn you, I claimed to be baffled by your post. What's odd is that you're asking the music supervisor of a film to give a message to the director to go find another line of work - why? Would you be alright with the director sending you a message to stop writing songs and go find other work?!? Morality & decency are the basic tenets of a lot of religions, not only the one you mentioned. Its even a basic tenet of a lot of non-religious people too. BTW - the whole "In God We Trust" thing is a less than desirable replacement for E Pluribus Unum as an official motto, if we're to go on the whole separation of Church and State. It only started appearing widely on money in 1957, we got along as a nation without it for well over 100 years. Actually, I know a guy who had a song in the Kardashians show. I know a guy too. He was hired specifically to write something for that show. Then it got used in multiple episodes and multiple seasons. It made me a lot of money for a few hours work. I've never even watched an episode of it. But I'm happy I created some music for it.

Let's see, Jody:
I take it as condemnation when the founder of this website says, "What a horrible way to respond!" Perhaps my skin is too thin but none of this really amounts to two hoots in hell. I gave my opinion of the film clip. My mind is unchanged. The film clip I saw was unfit for human consumption. No insult intended for Dominique. He has clients who need music for a grade "D" movie in the making.
While I'm responding to your post, the phrase, "In God We Trust" still appears on the coins we use in this country. It did not endorse a specific religion. (Nothing wrong with E Pluribus Unum)
Separation of Church and State is only meant to prevent having an official Church (such as the Church of England) from being associated with the Government... as it was in Colonial Times. Oddly enough, in the Colonial era, the Church was where birth, death and marriage records were registered. There were few, if any Courthouses in those early days particularly in Virginia. All Colonists were required to belong to the Church of England until much later in the Colonial period of our history. Those Parish records certainly still make genealogical research easier.
If your rationale is only about making money and not actually promoting material fit for human consumption on the screen or as music, so be it. We have a difference of opinion. That is why they make Fords and Chevys... Republicans and Democrats.

Insult may not have been intended, but it was an insult
Freedom of speech doesn't actually apply to the private sector. Just ask the former owner of the Clippers, Donald Sterling, he got his team taken away from him, because he made racial remarks IN HIS OWN HOME!
Legally he had the right to make the comments, but the nba has their own code of conduct, and they kicked him out.
There are horror movies that I never understood why somebody would want to make, they seem like pure evil. But I'm never going to tell somebody to not make it, or go to see it. I may advise my niece and nephew not to, but that's different.
A lot of things in the world make me mad. This just does not see like something to worry about, especially if you haven't seven seen the whole movie.
I don't agree with all the things the Rolling Stones sang about, or any rock n roll band, but I'd hate somebody telling me I couldn't listen to them. I get what I can use out of any music, and run with

Guys, If you aren't interested, move along... perhaps there's a baby seal you can club elsewhere.
. Brian: This one quote stood out to me, like it didn't have anything to do with the topic at hand, I'm probably the only one on this forum that might pickup on it, but it is a sore point to most Newfoundlanders. Greenpeace made millions if not billions using cuddly baby seals to pluck at the heart strings of people while vilifying the whole population of a province of Canada. There has been no baby seals clubbed or killed in the seal hunt for the past 30 to 40 years, still Greenpeace uses the baby seals to raise money giving the false impression that it still goes on. People in this province have had death threats from over zealous animal lovers. We are not barbarians as some like to believe, we are a friendly loving people as we showed in 911 when a small airport town of Gander, less than 10,000 people took in, housed and fed some 7000 stranded people when planes were not allowed into the US. Surrounding smaller towns helped also to house and feed these people, many of these people were American citizens. I don't know if this was aimed at me or not. I never mentioned anything about the film, although I agree with Dave, the bit I saw was a bit of a shock but not near as shocking as other films that are getting produced every day. Seems people go for this type of film, I guess it is the sign of the times. Things will get worst and worst and then the end will come.

Aw, Humm, This post reminded me of a Jim Reeves song that had the phrase in it, THE WILDER YOUR HEART BEATS, THE SWEETER YOU LOVE, I also watched the Trailer and have to wonder, where will this movie play if it's finished. It ain't no Sound of Music, that's for sure.

Strange how a call for songs came to this.
In other news, I had a metal instrumental I was going to last minute to Dominique but the mix was 20 years old and hadn't been heard it that many years. It had so many sonic issues I shelved the idea. no way I was gonna make the Tuesday deadline.

If your rationale is only about making money and not actually promoting material fit for human consumption on the screen or as music, so be it. We have a difference of opinion. You're right Dave, none of it amounts to anything in the grand scheme of history (I don't believe in hell). Which makes it all the more curious as to why you'd shoot JPF in the foot like that. Personally, its remarks like yours that can cause people to walk away from this songwriter's group, take their opportunities elsewhere. If that was the intent, you may well have succeeded. Plus it gives any future music supervisors pause to ever come deal with JPF members. I suspect that Brian's response was to express that Dominique (or any music supervisor) should be able to come here with music requests without being chastised for the project he/she is helping find music for. My rationale: I can't judge a book by the cover. There's always a zeitgeist possibility to what the movie touches on, which could be ripe for consumption. Who are we? The audience. And yes, we should express our views on art, film, music, books, etc.… Everything is good and acceptable doesn’t cut it with me. We create and then the audience judges. And that’s the way it should be. Should some art forms be banned? Of course not. But the audience will place the art form where it belongs. Exactly, but a ban was essentially requested here.

I have probably single-handedly brought about the demise of JPF... and for that, I am truly sorry. In the future, I will weigh my words and deeds more carefully.

Lolllllllllllll. Not fake news, fake Christians!
You mean you weren't being truthful when you said you started the demise of JPF? I thought you were.
like most outward Christians, loving one another as you would love yourself, is NOT important, but DON'T make a movie!

My three cents?
Not solicited, but here goes...
Everyone should stick to their guns, Dave included, just best to keep them holstered.
"Unhand that gun be gone, there's no one to fire upon...."
Love yazz.

Guys,
If you didn't like the clip/film, why spend a single moment posting or submitting?
Brian, I'm finally getting back to JPF after a busy two weeks or so. I was partly surprised that this post turned as it did and I appreciate your post, Brian. I understand that everyone has an opinion about this film and things in this world. The way you put it, is exactly right. If you don't like what you watched, don't spend time dealing with it. The kicker is, this is a comedy. Nothing in the movie is real. Lisa and Tony are not having an incestuous relationship. It's all humor and if anyone reads beyond that, they are creating something that does not exist. I have music supervised over 90 films and they span across many genres and subjects. "Old Fashioned" was a faith based film that did well in theaters (for an indie film). It almost grossed $2M. There were critics of this movie saying that the lead actor was overly "Holier Than Thou" and no Christian man would be like him. Some said that all men should be like him. It was released the same weekend that "Fifty Shades of Grey" was released so you can imagine the pros and cons of both movies were high. The first film that I music supervised in 2004 was written by my former wife and current friend. It was called "The Spin Cycle" and was about a girl named Candy who runs a Laundromat and had a fetish for guys in wheelchairs. She would have an "encounter" with these guys at her Laundromat while sitting on a washing machine during the spin cycle. There were negative opinions about the film but it did very well in the film festival circuit. The only song in the film was "It Must Be Love" by Don Williams. The publisher, Universal Music Publishing Group and the label, Universal Music Enterprises both read the synopsis and did not have an issue with granting festival rights. I am a Christian man with morals. Just because I work on a films like "Call Me Brother" or "The Spin Cycle" does not make me an immoral person. So, let's let art be art and appreciate the efforts we all put into our respective crafts.

Now, back to "Call Me Brother." We have finalized all of the placements and the film is set to have its World Premiere at the Florida Film Festival next month. It is set to screen on April 7 and April 12.
As I mentioned in a previous post, none of the songs submitted by JPF were selected despite a couple that were on the short list.
I will be posting a couple of new placement opportunities in the coming weeks. As I mentioned already, one will be a film about a horror film. Another (if all goes well) will be a film that takes place during Christmas so you know what kind of music I'll be looking for.
I'll post updates as things get closer to starting.
