Here is one of my lyrics that Ricki Bellos put some music and sang a while back but now she and Michael Zaneski have made it into another pretty little blues number.I appreciate that Ricki and Mike. https://soundcloud.com/user-986218945/blue-birdhttps://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=13686207Blue Bird Another morning, don't open the shade The way that i'm feeling, this bed won't get made Think i'll spend the day,far from laughter Nothing to lose,so what does it matter Turn off my dreams, they're only illusions Try to make sense,of all this confusion When love leaves its nest, and stretches its wings It finds a new bird, with a new song to sing It hurts when you're perched in a valley so low Where the sun doesn't shine and the wind doesn't blow All you can do is look up to the sky And wonder how long before, this blue bird can fly Morning has greeted, the evening so fast Nothing this poor bird can do ,to get past This sorrow holds me,flightless and still Bound by the heartbreak, lost all my will [chorus]

Hey all, great collab!
Bluesy for sure, but sounding pretty classic country to me. Reminds me of a tune Patty Lovelace might take on. Loved this chorus melody especially, a very nice break!

I felt like I had a front row seat at the Ryman in Nashville... and the three of you should be pretty darn proud of yourselves. Great write Mr. LeBlanc... and Ricki, your vocals continue to show a sultry side that immediately grabs the listener... and never lets go! Then there is the work of the man who can do just about everything (Mr. Zaneski)... and ya know, I'm beginning to believe you can probably fly. Genre? Country-blues, Americana, Folk-blues... who cares... it's wonderful.

Calvin, Travis, Eddie, Dave, and David, Thanks, guys! I appreciate you listening and reading your comments. It was fun setting this song--I could hear echoes of Townes in Mike's pen (a shared hero of ours), and Ricki delivered another heartfelt vocal. This to me does feel connected to Townes, Gillian Welch and Lucinda Williams, but also to older music, both of the rural South, and of the "parlor" variety from over a century ago, andI enjoyed every second of my work on this--especially using the musical saw which I had been chomping at the bit to have a song that actually seemed to want one in it. Thanks again all. Mike

Michael, Ricki, Mike,
It’s a beautiful vocal, melody and lyric—all coming together on a compelling chorus. I’m a little torn here. Because it’s just darn perfect on all levels. So I'll say this with some reluctance, only to offer it up for what it's worth--aware of how little I know about putting a great song like this together.
As I listened, the verses seemed a bit slow—I mean, I kinda wanted it to move just a beat or two faster. Though in contrast, the chorus seemed perfect to me (and in the same time as far as I can tell). So I don’t know what to make of my feedback. It’s probably not worth much; but there it is. Not sure if it's helpful, and please ignore it if so.
Really outstanding, outstanding collaboration. Enjoyed it a ton!
Best regards to you all,
Deej

Nice job everybody! Great production, everybody stands out just right. I know you're at the target length already but it would have been nice to let the slide guitar have a solo. Maybe you could bump up the tempo and bring in the time a little, so he can have one. I enjoyed it either way! Great job!!! Paul

Thanks for listening Deej, and all the positive comments. I think what you sense in the tempo is that the verses have more space in the lyrics and the music lets them breathe more. In the chorus, the lyrics come faster and take up less music so the tempo seems faster. It was done deliberately because the pace is slow and to sing the chorus like the verses would have made the whole song drag too much. I hope I'm explaining that well enough. Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it! Ricki

Thanks for listening, Paul. Not being a "musician" as such, it's doesn't come naturally to me to allow for any musical solos and since I didn't ask for one, Mike Z didn't provide one. I was more focused on showcasing Mike L's wistful lyrics with an equally wistful melody. Glad you enjoyed it anyway.

Lane, Nelson, Paul, and Deej, Thanks, guys! Deej, I get what you mean, but I never felt it dragging in the verses, just I had to be careful what I did in the open space between vocal phrases. It had to be nothing flashy even though that might have made the verses seem less slow--it would have been a wrong choice--it would detract from the mood. To accent the mood, I focused on bringing out those two alternating notes (the 6th and 7th) in the verses, that were there in Ricki's guitar and vocals, cuz they were a fairly unique thing in a song in this day and age, used like that, and so made "the band" play those notes like their life depended on it! And it feels parallel to the slighty pathetc (in a good way) and very poetic Townes Van Zandt-y feel of Mike's beautiful lyric..and also gives the song both a modern and really old-timey sound, simultaneosly..such is the genius of Ricki's music writing.. Mike

She's been mentioned...but we are big time Lucinda fans and this song nails her Americana feel...intentional or not. That's a great thing for us.

Just lovely. It's melancholic, but also hopeful, and a hint as if it's not taking itself all that seriously. The pacing of the song is really good, that slower BPM suits it perfectly. I like the upnote on the end of the the first lines in the verses, very memorable, and the change at the chorus really grabs you. The whole ensemble is just quality. Very very good.

I love this. Everything about it really, but the vocals really stand out, and Mr Z certainly gets the best out of "the band." I could really hear what he was doing in those "open spaces."
