Mud Runners (Neil Cotton)
World war one on the Western front A bloody struggle in fields of mud The theatre there was seldom dry
Mud runners climbed out of their trench Ran into the guns to save the French Slipping and sliding as thousands died
Mud runners answered the call of duty When the going got tough they kep' going Water levels were high where good men died Mud Runners answered the call of duty
The battle fought in the swamps of Nam The VC guerilla had the upper hand Blended well in the Saw Grass weeds
Mud runners died for uncle Sam Led like the blind through hot and damp They soldiered on buoyed up by fear
Mud runners answered the call of duty When the going got tough they kep' going Water levels were high where good men died Mud Runners answered the call of duty
Our soldiers today are Mud runner proud Might not be water but deep sh-t now
Mud runners answered the call of duty When the going got tough they kep' going Water levels were high where good men died Mud Runners answered the call of duty

I had heard about the doughboys from that era but never the Mud runners before now. Wonder who today's equivalent a full century later might be.
