Hi Barry,

A classic for sure, enjoyed your rendition! I've posted a couple of covers over the last couple of years, always fun.

I recorded Wildflowers by Tom Petty as a tribute to him when he died last year. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKMsOjXCP_c

Hi Barry:

I "second" Eddie's assessment of your rendition. To answer your question, "NO'... I don't post "covers" but I do use them for practice. Unfortunately, after I listen to what I've done... I have a difficult time deciding whether to slit my wrists or smash the computer... Chuckling deliriously!

It is fun to try to do a great song. Now I need to listen to Colin's version of "Wildflowers." Dang, we have so many talented folks here at JPF.

Have a great day.... ----Dave

The two favorites that I've done besides this one that I LOVE is ABRAHAM, MARTIN & JOHN and FATHER AND SON....I try and make the songs mine and take some poetic license. Don't forget some really famous people have made it by singing others songs first. More than one way to get there.

"Yesterday"
https://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=12060036

I was at Mike Caro's Substudio, (his home studio), in Staten Island, doing session work for months with Mike Appel, when Mike introduced me to a female singer/friend, (Patch).
Patch mentioned she loved The Beatles, so, with that, I started to play Some Beatle songs on the Roland console piano out in the main room. She mentioned the song, Yesterday. Not sure if it was that night or later, I played my arrangement of Yesterday, with Mike Caro recording it by using a long cord. We had always tracked my keyboard which would be in the control room. Patch and Caro asked me to produce the cover. So, after I was happy with the piano arrangement, I asked Caro to record Patch's vocal while he also recorded my piano. I wanted that live, ebb and flow feel, (in the moment). Patch stood right next to me and watched me play as she sang the lead. She would be aware of my arm and hand movements as to the feel of it all. She was amazing at how quickly she picked up on it all, as we didn't rehearse it. We both knew the song of course, so I wanted a fresh capture for it.

She then added harmony back at the usual mic area, (center of the room), allowing natural room reverb to be part of the vocals, as Caro always would do for any vocal.

I added a string arrangement in one take, not trying anything beforehand. (Head arrangement, which I seem to do better than hashing over things). I then wanted Caro to play acoustic guitar, which he thought to use his classical guitar. We were excited when he was tracking that, for if you ever get the chance to witness Caro record anything, you'll understand. I suggested where to play, for which he took over and did what he felt, which is what you do with him. He, being ill, labored over getting it all just so, which I already thought he did great before he said, "Nah,,,,AGAIN"! When he smiled at the end of the song, we all knew it was perfect. Caro mixed it, BUT I ;ater Mastered it without knowing what I was doing. Caro might have the best version. The one you will hear is my overdoing things in the attempt to Master. (I should have stuck to doing things I know).

With the over compressed and other issues in mind, (excuse me for that), here is my take on the tempo and feel for an original female version on a great Paul song, Yesterday.

Thank you,
John

Barry,

I’ve recorded a couple of covers. Usually, it’s me and my good buddy—we open a bottle of wine and mess around trying to make something sound listenable. We have our hits and misses. We did a nice version of “Back Home Again” by J. Denver (one of my better vocals, if I may say), and a good version of “Sporting LIfe,” where my friend took lead vocals and laid down a nice guitar solo. But I’m not sure I’d post them.

Out of curiosity, I did up a cover of “If I Fell” (Beatles) on SoundCloud (the only cover to date) just to see what reaction I might get. It’s a single track—really rough with maybe too much echo—but it’s a song I love to play and sing. Here’s the link for what it’s worth: If I Fell.

With all the great threads on JPF, makes me wonder if there might be some merit to creating a a “Cover” forum.

All the best,

Deej

I like that idea of a cover section.

"Stand By Me"
https://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=13119317

Besides "Yesterday", "For No One", and a couple of others, I played and sang a piano/full band/orchestra based "Stand By Me". (In the general style and production of what The Funk Brothers for Motown did in the studio for many Motown artists).

Just Plain Quotes
"Our enemies may not be who we think they are. They are not Major Label monopolies. The world will always have 'majors.' They are not big corporations who own everything. The world will always have 'big' ones. Our enemies are not the loud mouthed critics telling us we will fail. The world will always have those too. Our most dangerous enemy is our own quiet acceptance of the fate we perceive these entities have mapped out for us. The only danger is our own complacency, or inactivity, and our willingness to believe so called experts who tell us we 'can't' and that our grim fate is inevitable." -Brian Austin Whitney
