Hi All,

I have been taking some time off but I am now working on a new CD for my band, Rosewood Creek. This is one of mine with the full band - not quite finished but I need some feedback on production, etc. This is being recorded in my home studio with the full band, essentially one track at a time. The theme is how important everyone is......

Someone Has to Bury All the Bodies

Someone Has to Bury All the Bodies Copyright ©2016 Colin Ward

The grave-digger leans upon his shovel,
And thinks about the job he has to do,
Another one has passed away before him,
He scrapes the dirt from underneath his shoe

CH 1
We all play our part,
In life’s unyielding game,
And we all do our best,
To stay among the sane,
Not everyone’s a star,
Not everyone seeks fame,
1. Someone has to bury all the bodies
2. Someone has to fill all the bellies
3. Someone has to bring us all our bills

V2
The waitress sets the plate upon the table,
And the eggs look up at her as if to smile,
She wonders if her role in life is worthy,
Or is she just a name in someone’s file?

Ch 2

Instrumental V x 2 Marty

BR
No matter where you fit,
You do your very best,
Your job in life is valuable,
As much as all the rest

V3
The mailman trudges through the raindrops,
Carrying a bag of bad news,
He drops the bills inside the mailbox,
He wonders when he’s paid his dues

Ch 3

Someone has to bring us all our bills
Someone has to fill all the bellies
Someone has to bury all the bodies

Someone has to fill all the bellies
Someone has to bring us all our bills
Someone has to bury all the bodies

On the last chorus Colin a small thing but reversing the two ve
lines as above ?
Bellies get filled then the bill follows.

Good theme really.A friend of mine is the former manager of a 5* hotel. He always believes that it's team work that makes the dream work ( and all that corporate rubbish)
And the most important person in the chain to him was the unsung, lowely kitchen porter.

A really meaningful lyric, Colin:

..."not everyone seeks fame" really resonates with me.... but the entire song is something to absorb, enjoy and learn from. Clever, my talented friend. Your band-mates certainly played their hearts out and we are grateful recipients. Did I tell you the new homes being built in the once tranquil field behind my house are to be called "The Rosewood Addition?" From now on, every time I see that well crafted sign... I'll think of you and the band on my way to the River.

Thanks for sharing a wonderful song. ----Dave

Hi Colin,

Great overall sound and nice production and killer guitar solos.

Love the lyric, and though I think there could be more urgency, at times, in your vocals, thought them pretty damn enjoyable as well.. smile

Another Dire Straits like tune from you Colin, and I like the sound a ton. Love the line “Someone has to bury all the bodies”—in fact, it’s so strong and compelling, that the variations thereafter don’t strike as rich. Would you consider shifting the order—that is, going from the more ordain (delivering the bills) to the more macabre (burying the bodies)? Just a thought that struck me as I listened.

But, gosh, this is a great sounding and put together tune. All the hard work shows. Well, well done!

Best regards,

Deej

Colin, I've got nothing on the production end of this, it all sounds great to me. You never disappoint there. I'm not sure you're looking to make changes lyrically but I think they could be a lot stronger. I'd limit each "profession" to 1 or 2 lines each and really make them count. It would better drive home your theme and you could cover a wider group of unsung heros; teachers, janitors, farmers, cab drivers, etc, etc. Then, taking Deej's suggestion, put the gravedigger verse at the end where it would have a lot of impact. Just a thought.

Colin,

One of my favs of yours.......just really cool lines that grab a hold of you. The music is so smooth, great word for that and neat arrangements as always from you. Like everything about this, but you might want to experiment with what Travis and Michael Z said should you want to explore those sugs.

The band is still sounding pretty darn good Colin.
Really liked the intro and your solos.

Seem like the rhythm guitar panned right could come toward center a bit.
It feels a bit too far right.
I'm listening with headphones, if that makes any difference.

Over all it sounds great to my ears.

This is one of those songs where you could literally go on and on highlighting different professions.
Like Dylan's "You gotta serve somebody".

You guys never disappoint Colin.

Mike, Thank you. The first guitar solo is by Marty Fouts, another band member, and the one at the end is mine.

Thanks for your thoughts. My voice normally lacks urgency because my urgency vocal chords don't sound good!

Deej, I know the title line is more dramatic than the others and I wanted to put it first to draw people in. The characters were selected from people I saw on the rainy day when I wrote it.

Ricki,

Thanks for your thoughts. It's too late to make major changes since we've been playing the song live for a while and my brain is stuck on what we have. I could change the order but I want the first verse to draw people in.

Howdy sir,

I read the comments by Deej and Ricki re: using the gravedigger image at the end to give the title and central idea a bit more impact. I think that's a good idea to incorporate as you perform this.

Overall I thought it sounded really good. I think the instruments are sitting nicely in the mix. It seems like the harmonies were a little buried though. You might bring them up a tiny bit.

That's all I have. Cool idea and tune.

Wendy,

Thanks for listening. I changed the order of the outro and brought up the volume of the harmony. Not yet sure about the verse order. Still fine tuning! Thanks.

Love it. Great idea for a lyric and I love the vibe. I wouldn't mess much with the production - don't lose that Sultans of Swing feel!

Love this one ... I seem to recall you posted it a while ago ( as a video?). This has a Leonard Cohen feel and even he would be proud of the lyrics. Nice guitar break, too.

Great job, thanks

Scott,

Thanks. Glad you like it. There will only be minor changes at this point.

Kevinism,

Thanks for checking it out. Yes, we had a live band video of the song but no CD quality recording. Leonard Cohen, eh? I like that!

"Our enemies may not be who we think they are. They are not Major Label monopolies. The world will always have 'majors.' They are not big corporations who own everything. The world will always have 'big' ones. Our enemies are not the loud mouthed critics telling us we will fail. The world will always have those too. Our most dangerous enemy is our own quiet acceptance of the fate we perceive these entities have mapped out for us. The only danger is our own complacency, or inactivity, and our willingness to believe so called experts who tell us we 'can't' and that our grim fate is inevitable." -Brian Austin Whitney
