It is against my judgment to have two songs up (because I have a difficult time keeping up) but I am casting this one in here for a few listens and then I will let it die.

I just mainly want to know if the song stands on its own/has legs/or feels complete. Hope that makes sense.

This started from a Google search about "things that are overrated." Dubstep was the #1 thing! Parfait is down there a bit. I wrote the lyric and most of the music. My local partner in songwriting crimes, Don Sechelski, helped me out some with the music. At some point, I may redo this. This past year, I have been working 60 + hour weeks, so doing music stuff outside the local band I sometimes play in has been almost impossible.

Thoughts are appreciated.

Dubstep and Parfait

How many casualties
Fell on your blade
How many times did you
Hand me the grenade?

How many spoils
Did you gain from this plunder
How many times was I foil
For you, my boy wonder?

(Chorus)

We aren't peculiar
We're older than time
You move in circles
I walk in straight lines
I guess it's kind to end it
This way
Freedom is overrated
Freedom is overrated
Like dubstep
And parfait

So I lick my wounds
I ain't sure where I'll go
I'll rent an old trailer
That's easy to tow
Hug you goodbye
And set sail with no rudder
I do this for you
My boy wonder

(Chorus)

(Bridge/Outro)

I'm leaving you my poem
The one that you never got
The one about Jesus
And the Wal-Mart parking lot

Freedom is overrated x 4
Like dubstep
And parfait

Hi Wendy & Don:

Titles are important... and this one says, "Today!" Enjoyed the song and your somewhat vulnerable vocal. (That is meant to be a compliment!) You sing with conviction and sincerity with the sound of a teen looking for direction and answers. Very nice write, you two. Best of luck with this one. ----Dave

Hi Wendy,

What a beautifully sad lyric..

It didn't dawn on my 'til late in the song that the singer is singing "freedom is overrated" ironically, cuz she appears to be newly on her own, and is experiencing that freedom, and it's a transitional and difficult period for her.

There's so many great lines in this, especially the nod to LC with your opening..

If dubstep ever becomes a "what's that?" word you can always choose another overrated thing that may be more current (since dubstep isn't the word you need to rhyme with) --yes, I envision you singing this one for awhile.. smile

Mike

I knew the music and vocal would be awesome and I wasn't disappointed. Lyrically, this was so Wendy. I can feel the visuals and would love to read that poem!

I'm not sure if saying "freedom is overrated" is being ironic or not? How did you mean it? It feels to me like she's hurt and not at all good with the situation but is resigned to it, so I can hear her saying "love is overrated" with a little sarcasm and bitterness. Maybe that's just me, projecting? smile

Still, a sweetly sad piece of work. Well done!

Ricki,

I think you went deeper with the lyric than I did initially.

After listening a few more times I can see clearer how conflicted the "singer" (in the fictive sense) is about her new found 'freedom', and I was probably projecting an idealized version of the singer who would WANT to feel that freedom was important and not overrated (and therefor using the term ironically); but giving more weight to "licking my wounds" and "sailing with no rudder" I'd say yes, in this story, the singer's perhaps in a kind of co-dependant or abusive relationship (judging from the opening two verses) and is rather conflicted, and using "freedom is overrated" straightforwardly indeed.

Many layers to Wendy's work always.. smile

Mike

Hi Wendy,

Lots of great visuals throughout and what I got out of it was a sad, but determined story, so it is not without hope as this person’s actions are woeful but pragmatic. And the pretty, wistful vocal emphasizes the plight. So to answer the question you asked, I do think the story rounds itself out nicely, especially with the actions in the bridge and the sentiments afterward, which are just that...thoughts surrounding the actions...resulting in emotion. Good work!

Kristi

Hi Wendy.
I always admire your lyrics. They leave me wondering. Just like the guy you're singing about.

I'm leaving you my poem
The one that you never got
The one about Jesus
And the Wal-Mart parking lot

I actually like the phrase "freedom is overrated".
Whether it's finished or not, well for me I'd like to hear another instrument or two (maybe bass and mandolin or fiddle) to fill the spaces and lay the atmosphere down.

Vic

It's never too late? Yes it is, so do it now.

If, given time, a monkey can write the complete works of Shakespeare maybe there's hope for me.
