New One.

Yes, I will do a version of me singing this "straight" but for this version I did this particular vocal style very much on purpose. I have so many people saying they are falling out of their chair, though, I am in no rush to do the straight version. Maybe next week. Enjoy it for what it is--fresh out of the can. If it makes you smile, my job is done. smile

Casting Pearls Before Swine
By David Snyder

V1

Everybody pick a number
Go ahead and stand in line
You know we canít get any dumber
Casting pearls before swine
You can cast them at the altar
You can cast them at the bar
You can cast them at the lottery
Or that new and shiny car
You can cast them at the phonies
You can cast them at the fakes
You can cast them at that cement wall
Just before you hit the brakes

V2

You can cast them at the accolades
They hand out after school
Once they've taken all your money
And theyíve just made you a fool
In the land of Simon Coward
You can cast them at the stage
When theyíve stripped you of your faith
You can cast them at your rage
You can cast them at the President
And all the members of the feast
When they tell you that you need them
Theyíre no better than a thief

CH

Everybody wants you shackled
They want your money and your soul
But you didnít ask to come here
You never asked to be sold

V3

You can cast them at your parents
If you need call their bluff
You can cast them at your shrink
When you say youíve had it rough
You can cast them at the heavens
If your heartís run out of love
You can cast them at the preacher
When he says youíre not good enough
You can cast them at the river
You can cast them at the sun
You can cast them at your lover
Just the way youíve always done

CH

Everybody wants to shackle you
They want your money and your soul
But you didnít ask to come here
You never asked to be controlled

V4

Better run for the border
Better make your great escape
Letís saddle up those horses
And ride before daybreak
Weíll leave everything behind us
Freedom for Freedomís sake
And you can tell the watchman
Iíve had all that I can take
Hurry up now princess
You know weíre running out of time
Donít leave me stranded in the dust, honey
Casting pearls before swine

CH

Everybody wants us baby
They want our money and our souls
But we didnít ask to come here
We didnít asked to be sold
Everybody wants us shackle us
They all want full control
We gotta make a border crossing
Before our bodies get too old
Come on quickly now
you know weíre running out of time
Donít leave me stranded here in Babylon
Casting pearls before swine
Last time I talked to God
He had something else in mind
And I can see the New Jerusalem
And I need to cross the finish line
I wonít waste another second
Casting pearls before swine
Before swine

That took some writing, David.
You do sound like him too.
Good one.

David,

These are terrific lyrics; an awesome, epic write. And the performance is great and a spot-on vocal tribute. You wouldn't need to touch a thing, and it would still be brilliant.

But that said, and IMHO, I'd encourage you to do that straight version you speak of. Not only because I want to hear it--and I absolutely do--but also because I worry that the Dlyan-esque take on this might in some eyes diminish and distract from how compelling the tune is. IMHO, it's worthy and deserving of its own voice.

All the best,

Deej

Title caused me to open the thread.

Too cynical and dejected for my personal tastes...but...I kept reading because it was interesting and I liked many of the lines and phrases in the lyrics.

Very worthwhile post. Thumbs up from me.

Hi Deej,

I agree with you wholeheartedly and plan on tackling the straight version when I can get "in the zone." That straight vocal is going to be the hardest part of the whole thing. Still haven't figured out exactly how I want to do that in order to make it work.

But once it hits me, all I gotta do is turn on the mic in the studio and do it. Until then, I wait......

Hi David,

Having read the lyric first, I didn't know what to expect--maybe something with a preacher-y gospel feel, and I am happy to hear this unearthed outtake from Slow Train Coming (Dylan)....

Fun stuff, and yes I smiled once..

but it was a smile that lasted the entirety of the song.. smile

Technically impressive, David.

That was a pretty cool Dylan... (performance and lyrics)

Did you use Biab in this at all.

Thanks Nelson,

BIAB audiophile tracks are a staple of my recording process and I wouldn't or couldn't live without them. Mostly for drums and bass. I play a lot of instruments but am not wedded to any particular approach. I usually play most of the acoustics myself because I am always looking for a unique style I can usually only get when I play it myself. Same for electric most of the time. If I want to sound prog rock I have to play the bass myself, ditto for keyboards and piano. But insofar as having 24 hour access to the world's greatest studio musicians, I use them all the time.

What a shame, I bought the "audiophile tracks " version of BIAB, with the external hard drive (it aint cheap), a while back but never really learned to use it.
As a test I plugged in some chords and did "Darlin Child" but to hear through Mike Z's and your work, what I have unused at my fingertips, is shameful. sick

Oh well, keep up the good work, David.

Hi David,

This covers it all. Such a well-thought out lyric and is delivered resolutely. I like how the lines play off of each other to make a point (or two or three)! Itís easy to tap your toes to this and shake your head in agreement or disagreement... wink

And I like the distance covered in the chorus lyric by changing that last line...then the switch from "you" to "we". Subtle, but it's there.

Itís a journey, itís about the journey, and itís an enjoyable ride! Very nicely done!

Kristi

Americana tune that is reminscent of Bob Dylan's "Everyone Must Get Stoned"

Good lyrics, vocal delivery is spot-on, music works well, and the mix is excellent.

Well done!

Peace,
TC

If it has strings I will find a way to play it!

This works on so many levels.

A make-ya-listen-make-ya-think write. Never let's go.

A good production - that Blond-On-Blond-thing happening...

Looking forward (really) to the David Snyder version!

Floyd,

Thanks man! I am trying to get into the zone to do the straight version. The problem is every time I try to do it, I start laughing. Maybe this week. I will let you know.

Also, if you want to come over, I will show you how to tune your guitar like I promised and also show you how a real country song is done, because I am sure you want to spend some time just basking in the aura of my wonderfulness. If so, please call and make an appointment. The calendar looks surprisingly wide open. I am not sure why more people aren't taking me up on this.
