I thought it was interesting that IMDB was closing their message boards in 4 days, after becoming the only real go to place on all things movies and TV. I used their boards to learn all sorts of things about films and TV shows as well as to post reviews etc. Now, they will only use Facebook and other social media for people to respond to content etc.

They say they are doing this, in large part, because of the non stop political arguments that happen on nearly every discussion. Ironically, they point to this, but are pushing people to places like Facebook which is nothing more than a cancer filled vile cesspool of intolerance to diversity of thought no matter what you believe and the focus on good and bad Film and TV will be watered down to just noise.

It's likely going to have a disappointing effect on film and TV consumption that most won't realize until it is too late. Everything is being fed into the same handful of sites where finding truth is more and more difficult. There really isn't anything comparable to IMDB for music (All Music really falls well short) and it is sorely needed. But music has become so devalued, no one will likely ever bother to build such a site. And now the golden goose is going to be sacrificed for corporate control of info without dissent on IMDB.

The internet age which was supposed to open up free speech to new levels has actually created new tools of oppression and misinformation for those in power. And so it goes!

So another one bites the dust.

Actually its part and parcel for those who can hide behind anonymity. When you're behind a mask, people will likely not act with the same impunity as they would if they weren't hidden. The IMDB boards were anonymous, much like it used to be here. Thus the move to using FB for comment posting is a way to remove that element. Will it work? Who knows.

As for AMG (all music guide). The major problem with it is, unlike IMDB, its not able to be edited by the artist, label, management, or enduser and then verified. Attempting to get misinformation changed, or even a crappy written bio, is akin to getting blood from a stone. There's major flaws in the information about me on that site and even with an inside connection - I still haven't been able to get it changed. The real sadness about it is, that information is used by so many services that now what is fiction has stuck like fact.

Can someone start a MusicDB that works? I bet they could.

A good way to use Facebook is to join closed groups on subjects of interest. I am in a few and the great unwashed rarely speak up. The discussions are on point and pertinent to the subject. And the members are literally from all over the world and contribute equally no matter where they are from. No diversity or discrimination issues.

You can't find that in a group of musicians and I dislike hard right as much as hard left. Both live on propaganda and ignorance otherwise they'd realize both sides are liars and are corrupt... we rarely hear from anyone in the middle or who admits that their side has plenty to fix as well.

And I looked at my entire post history on IMDB going back to 2004 and not one exchange involved politics or acrimony. Now (even on IMDB) the trolls rule everywhere, but most of all on Twitter and Facebook. (Speaking of which our resident troll is back... he's so easy to spot).

Brian,

Since I don't know if you already found this since you first started this thread, I'm going to share the new version of the IMDb message board.

They call it GetSatisfaction which is their community support forum. It's basically the same as the old version. It doesn't have the different specific forum categories like the old version. They have tabs for Questions, Ideas, Problems, Praise and Announcements.

Hi Dom:

Welcome back. The link you provided works. Will it lead us to another link where we can access the actual database... or is IMDB gone forever? I don't care for reading the posts on message boards but would like to be able to access an accurate and usable music database.

Thanks for your efforts on our behalf... and I'm glad to know you are back with us.

Regards, ----Dave

Hi Dominique!

Also, IMDB no longer permits the general public to view your resume. I joined IMDB as a means to display my resume to potential clients. Now when a client/ or person clicks on my resume link they're prompted to join IMDB Pro. A box appears titled "Become an IMDbPro Member Today" - and that's as far as one can get into my resume. Yeah, it gripes me knowing I joined for this purpose and it was taken away without even a notice.

John,

Yeah, that's unfortunate. I guess Amazon was tired of giving away a valuable resource. I used to spend as much time on IMDB as any other site but rarely do more than look up a familiar actor or check to see if a netflix film is worth watching (though even that isn't what it once was as the comments usually offered much better reviews than the corporate reviews they post or the groupthink number which rarely matches niche audience films.

Dom,

Is Getsatisfaction.com actually Amazon owned and operated or just a third party capitalizing on the change at IMDB?

Dave,

Thanks! It's good to be back.

From my account, I don't see a link to the actual database. IMDb is still around, just the message board, as we once knew it, is gone. You can still use http://imdb.com to access it.

Brian,

It is a third-party company that IMDb is using to handle this. There are other companies that use Getsatisfied.com. They just add their company after the / to have there own support community.

On the IMDb Help Center page they have this note: "Need more help? Visit the official IMDb support community powered by GetSatisfaction."

John,

I did not know about the issue with resumes. I've had an IMDbPro account since 2003 so when I click on a resume link on the free, public site, I go directly to the resume.

Have you seen your resume as it appears on the IMDbPro site? It's not formatted like a normal resume. It's one block of text from top to bottom.. Here's a small sample.

--------

Music played on: Quantico, West World, Steve Harvey Show, Gotham (FOX), Saturday Night Live, Mack Chat (Disney),Thou Shalt Not, Needles & Pins, Larrymania, Idiotsitter, Truinside, Vice News Tonight (HBO), Midnight with Chris Hardwick, Dateline NBC, The Voice, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Lip Sync Battle, Extinct or Alive - The Tasmanian Tiger, The Marilyn Denis Show, Behind the Curtain: Eclipse, FS1 College Football (Texas Tech & Oklahoma), Fox On Air

--------

I'll see if there's something on the Pro side that can fix it so it's more presentable.

This is the non-pro site Domininque: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm8486845/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1 It won't allow the resume to show. About 5-6 months ago they blocked the resume section unless you're a member.

Of course the IMDB Pro will show the resume as long as one is login'd.

Best, John smile

John,

I couldn't find anyway to fix the resume to make more presentable. The only fix to both the presentation of your resume and making your placements visible to both the IMDb and IMDbPro visitors is to add each of your placements to each film and show episode.

I went ahead and did your "Quantico" placement of "Romantically Discreet." Take a look at how it appears on your IMDb profile. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm8486845/

If you do this for all your placements, you will not have to worry about people needing to have a subscription to view your placement credits.

If you do want to do this and you're not familiar with adding your placement credits to the soundtrack pages, let me know and I'll send you the step by step instructions.

John,

I forgot to mention that I wasn't sure if AudioSparx was the publisher at the time of that "Quantico" placement so I didn't add a publisher. These soundtrack credits can be edited at any time so a "Published by xxx" line can be added to that credit.

That's definitely a solution Dominique. A lot of work. No "Quantico' was a "Crucial Music" placement. Thanks for your help.

John,

You're welcome! It would be a lot of work with all of your placement credits, but well worth it when it's all done. crazy

I just made the edit to add Crucial Music as the publisher.

Thanks Dominique! It's a bit simpler on my new website here: http://johnlarenceschick.com/home but at least I have an option on IMDB now thanks to you.

John,

With your impressive list of credits, it would be well worth it to add them all to a traditional IMDB page. I bet you'd get a lot more interest and direct contacts. It might even lead to complete soundtracks if that is even something you'd want to do. Even if you had to hire a kid to do it it might be worth it, or find a volunteer.

Complete soundtrack? The ultimate goal Brian!

My resume can still be seen through IMDB Pro which consists of many people in the film industry.

John,

I agree with Brian 100%. I'm a music supervisor who uses IMDb a lot. When I saw how your resume was formatted (or not formatted), I had no desire to read it. That one huge block of text looks like a daunting task to try and find where one credit ends and the next one starts.

Had I not met you here, I would have moved on without reading you resume and learning more about you and your music. Adding your placements to IMDb will make them neat and orderly and appealing to other music supervisors.

The process is not that troublesome. I didn't post the instructions earlier because you didn't seem too thrilled to pursue this. Now after Brian's post, I figure I'll post it and you can decide for yourself.

  • Go to the IMDb page of the film or episode of the show.
  • Click on the Soundtracks link down the right side of the page.
  • Click on the Edit Page button.
  • Scroll down to the Soundtracks line and change the No Change dropdown box to Add X Item(s). Pick the number that corresponds to the number of songs you have in the film or episode. Then click Continue.
  • In the Song box, copy and paste the code below into the box. Add your song title and if there is/was a publisher at the time of the placement, enter that publisher. If there are co-writers, you will need to add them too. If they do not have an IMDb profile, you just enter their name. If there is no publisher (i.e., self published), you can remove that line.

    "Song Title"
    Written and Performed by [link=nm8486845]
    Published by

  • Click on the Check These Updates button. If all is good, you will get a green box. If there are any issues, you will get a red box with instructions to fix the problem.
  • If you get the green box, click Submit These Updates and you're done.
  • If you get the red box, fix the error and then click the Re-Check These Updates. The box should turn green. If it does, click Submit These Updates and you're done.

I added your song, "Ibiza Night" to the film, " Mindy McCready Fallen Angel," to test the steps above.

If you post your list of placements with film title, show title w/episode title (air date of episode if possible), your song title, all writers, all publishers (if any) and maybe they might slowly get added over time.

Let me know if you have any questions about this.

John,

If I wasn't buried in the music awards I would help you with this I think it is THAT important. Beyond just the important ones you describe, it's the sum total which will blow people away should they find your page. In fact, once it is 100% finished, I would add a direct link to that page on ALL your social media, email signatures, and correspondence. It's really that important. It isn't that offers will poor in, BUT should someone hear one of your pieces and look into who it was, they will be blown away by your history and this is where a full soundtrack could come from. It only takes one to get the ball rolling. Heck, I think it will boost people's opinion's of this community as even though we have some very famous and successful members, you're so active and friendly here that it will be a shining light for visitors that there's talent here and real people you can talk to who know what they are doing. Jody Whitesides should do the same if he hasn't. I do plan to interview you (with your permission of course) for our new YouTube channel coming as soon as I can finish these music awards (which are wearing me out, but that's another topic). I think it is critical to show people that if you have talent and work professionally even if you're not well known you can have such a resume as you've produced. Believe me, most writers and artists would KILL to have even a couple of your credits in their entire careers. I don't think you understand what an accomplishment your career already is and you're still cranking them out. Perhaps I should have told you more adamantly how impressed I am with your accomplishments!

Wow, thank you for your kind remarks Brian. I don’t take my successes for granted. And I’m well aware it can all stop tomorrow. You’ve created a wonderful website here that encourages, educates, and inspires us.

John,

I'm willing to lend a helping hand too. I feel the same as Brian on this.

I can add another one while I'm making some other IMDb updates today. How about sending the song title for your placement in the "Buckwild" episode, "Ghosts in the Holler." I'll knock it out for you.

Best!

Hey Dominique!

I appreciate your help, but at the same time I feel ashamed. I really do have time to get this done myself. After supper my time is often free. I just get lazy. laugh When it comes to business matters.

ASCAP lists Buckwild for 2 episodes. They used the same track on both titled “Scary Background 1” (short version). That’s a good reason I should do this myself. Some of my placements are better than others. And I can supply links for some. My favorite placement was Jessica Brown Findley’s interview for Vanity Fair: https://www.bing.com/videos/search?...12AA14688C4FDFDD3C3&&FORM=VDRVRV

I hope you understand Dominique. I really appreciate both yours and Brian’s support. But I should be doing this myself.
Now, if you ever need music for one of your films, I'm on board. I'm not lazy on the music side, just the business side. laugh

John,

I totally understand. I just wanted to extend the offer.

I was listening to a lot of your music this morning. You have A LOT! I just posted a placement opportunity that you might want to check out.

If you have something buried down in your long list of songs that would be a good replacement for Simon & Garfunkel's "Bookends" (cue #28), e-mail me. An instrumental is acceptable.

Best!

That's a short list on my website. I have about 4,000 tracks now. Yeah, a nightmare tracking down the appropriate track for mood. Sandra (my wife) offered to catalog all my music in Excel last year. I never took her up on it – my bad… Is the opportunity posted on your website here: http://www.hearitclearit.com/ ? I imagine you’re looking for something folksy/ organic/ guitar? If you have an example of what you’re looking for, I could compose something fresh.

Thanks again, John smile

John,

It is on my website and it's posted here (Music Licensing Opportunity (Indie Feature Film)).

There's also "The Swan" that is a public domain composition. I'm looking for a good clean recording of this one.

I think that's automatic when credits are entered into IMDb. Which reminds me that I have a new quarter of credits that need to be entered...

Jody,

It's not automatic. The music supervisor or someone from the film production team has to do it. If they do not do it, there are a lot of people that take the time to do it. The only problem with that is they don't always enter the correct information. I do it for all the film that I music supervise. I see too many films and TV shows with no soundtrack listing on IMDb.

John's IMDb credits (or lack there of) is a perfect example of it not getting done at all.

You should probably check to see that you have every single track included or add any that are missing.

Well I gave it a try... got totally lost loading my credits on the front page. I tried to list Gotham, episode "Viper":
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3993362/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 They used my "Italian Café Romance". I got to the box and it lost me on "copy and paste the code below the box" - what code? I didn't see any code.

If my son comes around this weekend I'll get him involved (after he fixes my ceiling fan, faucet leak, and a few other jobs). laugh

John,

This is what I meant by "the code" because it has text and the link with your IMDb name ID number. Use this for all of your credits just make the appropriate changes to the title and publisher.

"Italian Café Romance"
Written and Performed by [link=nm8486845]
Published by

If there are co-writers, use this one below. Just add a comma after your entry below and either type their name in or, you can look them up on IMDb and get their IMDb name ID number. You'll find it in the web address (URL) listed with nmXXXXXX, similar to yours.

"Italian Café Romance"
Written by [link=nm8486845]
Performed by [link=nm8486845]
Published by

If there is no publisher (besides you being self published) on the credits, you can remove the "Published by." If there is a publisher, it should be the publisher at the time of the placement.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Best!

Thanks Dominique! I still have some hurdles to get over. I have one show that used my music on 98 episodes (20-30 tracks) and a film like this one with no soundtrack credits: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1816661/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 - but you've given me enough info to get the job done.

John,

You do have a lot of credits to add. The good thing is, the entry of all the other credits will be basically the same.

When you have a episode or film with no credits yet, you still enter your credits the same way. Your credit will just be the first one.

Keep one thing in mind. The music credits should be in the order that they appear in the film. I know it's a difficult task without having the cue sheet.

Best!
