Hi Ricki, Every move/syllable, note, instrument is deliberate and effective. There’s a lot of subtleties here. I like your vocal delivery. And the pauses speak as loud as the notes.....it’s all part of the mood and story. But you guys know that. And it’s all done with style! Well done! Kristi
A musician must make music, an artist must paint, a poet must write, if he is to be ultimately at peace with himself. What a man can be, he must be. -- Abraham Maslow, American Psychologist

Maroon and Mike, I'm delighted to be part of a forum like JPF where pros like you are able to share your vast knowledge and toss around various musical ideas. While my own limited input to the discusion may be frustrating to me, I hope it isn't misconstrued as frustration with either of you and my attempts at deflective humor will not be a deterent for future discussions. I do appreciate your input.
Ricki Ricki, While I'm new here, it's likewise a thrill to trade musical ideas! Your lighthearted remarks prior brought a grin to my face. Thanks for making sure that we were in a civil exchange ;-) I look forward to the opportunity for further discussions, viewpoints, and learning! M. Corey

Interesting bluesy number in odd time that inbues a sense of longing.
The song is clever and has some nice changes in it. The production is quite good.
There is an audible vocal edit at 1:53 you may want to take a listen to - I am not sure if it's from comping the vocal part or perhaps a bit of pitch correction gone awry but it's definitely there.
I loved the risks you took with the timing and the time signature which paid off to some extent. It definitely helped to set the stage for the emotion of the song. That being said, the accent on the last 3 beats was a bit overused in my opinion. It turns around the beat and de-emphasizes the natural cadence of the song where beat 1 becomes a bit too vague. I think you should definitely use this trick during instrumentals here and there but I would shy away from it during the vocal parts. I liked it - I just think less would be more effective as a 'surprise' element in the song instead of a staple.
Overall, I really liked the tune, and the production was excellent.
Peace, TC

Thanks Mac, Johnny, Kristi, and TC.. This was a fun one to work on cuz I could hear Ricki having so much fun with it herself, and it was contagious. TC, at 1:53 Ricki's voice swoops down a fourth on the words "of your" and what you are hearing is Ricki's voice doing a kind of "downward half-yodel," lol..seriously..also known as "her voice broke" a little right there (in a cool sounding way I thought) and it's on her original vocal recording--not the product of any editing. Listen again with the idea of her voice just naturally kicking into a stronger juicier note on "your" since it's more in her power range then the preceding almost falsetto "of" note, and I think you'll hear that that's just her voice, not me cross-fading two vocal tracks. I don't think I was working with two on this song (it was awhile back) but I know for sure there was no Melodyne used on that stretch of her voice. It's just one of the many things that gives Ricki her particular sound and style--that "downward half-yodel"--I don't know what to call it other than "her voice broke in a cool way." As to those three notes, Ricki knows I am always happy to add, subtract, or change anything..anytime. My overriding concern or care is always that she is really happy with her song.. Mike

Thanks for listening and your input, TC. Glad you liked it overall. As for overusing the "3 beat", I'm from the "if it's worth doing, it's worth doing to excess" songwriting school of thought. It just felt right at the time and I never argue with my muse. Ricki

Thanks again Mike, for all you've done. I mostly appreciate that, in our musical relationship, you let me be me and take your role as a vocalist/musician/producer seriously, but never abuse it.

Not all of my songs stick to the 'standard song formula' and I can appreciate this. I like to take risks and push the boundaries a bit myself. The vocal thing I mentioned is just a minor nit - I just thought I'd point it out because on my own songs I become "ear-blind" to the tune after awhile. Sometimes someone will point out something obvious, and I will wonder how I missed hearing it. Good stuff. --TC

TC, I often wonder that same thing, how I've missed some very obvious mistakes. Like you say, "ear-blind". I love that. Can I use it sometimes? About that vocal thing, like I told Mike, I was a little disappointed because I had been going for a downward full yodel. I suppose instead of a "10", I'll only be gettign a "5"... :l Ricki
