NEW Section for the Break for "Sorry Now":
https://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=13645652

I went a bit out of my usual Beatle, etc style, reviving an older song I had in my usual style. I TRIED to go Pop R&B with this. Music was again easy to do, BUT not for my vocals, and being 64. THAT took WORK! ha! I do want tough critiques, so I know what more I can do, or to change things. Ive been so busy with trying to get better at all things in this very modest home studio. Open little room is all it is. NOT actually a studio. My wish for this tune is to enter it in the selling music sites to the general public. NOT for JPF to pay downloads. It is free to stream, which I hope you will maybe do to advise me in this new genre for me to TRY.

Thank you,
John

Johnny,

What a beautiful melody Johhny. It definitely sounds R&B. I like the overall "reverb" effect with this song's vibe, but would like to hear you take some off of the piano and maybe pan the piano a little wider than the vocals--giving lead vox center stage. I'd also like to hear the bass guitar punch through a little more--panning piano 25-35% will help both bass and drums to come through better. Experiment (maybe) with taking a 3-5 DB off the piano allowing strings in background to be better discerned--all JMO, use or lose.

I like the song, nice write and great romantic feel!

steady-eddie.

I'm listening as I write, Johnny:

I really enjoyed this song and believe our friend Steady Eddie has "hit the nail" squarely on the head. It is too good to let it go... so I'm hoping you will get back into your recording studio and grind away at this thing. Take it straight to "Hitsville" for us 'cause it's that good. ----Dave

Very nice. I think Eddie has some good advice about the panning to allow the vocals more space. I'd like to hear them a bit more clearly.

Dave, Gavin, Martin: Thank you. I just remixed, with remastering some of the tracks, for what I hope is a cleaner listen.

Johnny,

This is so much better, nice job with the re-mix. You can now hear everything and each has their spot giving you a more 3D balanced mix. Should you desire any more polishing you might look at adding a little more compression in that mastering process or the master fader, as there are a few spots that peak a bit. Not imperative however, and do it sparingly. I'm not advocating that compressing on the master fader is the norm, but with some types of mixes or their evolved status-a little compression can glue and cut out peaks in a mix before the mastering process.

Sounding good and definitely a romantic vibe, nice job, nice write.

steady-eddie.

Thank you so much, Eddie! Yeah, I did know about the over peaks. I record in Wav Audio, so I thought I could get away with a little push. But, you are right as to any mastering, as there should be headroom for that process. I did what I would shamelessly call Mastering, but of course, not how the Mastering Pros would do their craft/art. I pushed the output to match my other over pushed tracks. Thank again. I do wear too many hats.

Didn't hear the original but the remix sounds great.

Wouldn't have recognized your voice if I didn't know this was you - you sound more like Tom Petty than John Lennon! But your vocal approach really works with the track!

Good to see you are still at it. smile

Hi again, Johnny:

Mastering is a bit like black magic and I believe all of us would love to have "the touch"... but the final result is all that counts. It's been a few days since I heard the original and I'm assuming you replaced the original link with the new, re-mastered version. It's not perfect but it comes pretty darn close.

It's great having a "Wingman" like Eddie around to provide his sharp, precise ears and vision for improvement. (Thanks, Eddie!)

Now if only we could persuade Josh Groban to record this on his next album. Winner, winner... Chicken Dinner! Enjoyed, my friend. ----Dave

Very nice. That's a strong hook and a very easy listen overall. You do a great job on the vocals! Enjoyed the listen.

Loved this Johnny! I think it's a good thing that your influences show. You still sound like you.
I don't hear R&B at all. I do hear early Mac solo, which led me to think I'd like to hear a solo ala "My Love" rather than the spoken part.
I really enjoy your work; it's a pleasure to have a listen.
All the best!
-Mike

Happy Belated Thanksgiving and upcoming Christmas and whatever else you may celebrate!

I appreciate all your comments and suggestions. I've been dealing with some issues, so it's been challenging to keep up with everything. I am going to see if I can do what Mike just said, to put a solo in there instead of I guess my corny talking spot. (What was I thinking)?! I am NO 70's R&B singer or artist! ha! I record too hot, which I assume I then have a tough time in the mix, and then my feeble attempts at Mastering. With Tinnitus and Hyperacousis, I get fooled I guess, not really hearing the way most would hear things. Since I don't have a pro producer or songs being done by pro artists, I;m afraid the way I track and mix and all will have shortcomings. So, I DO really thank you for any suggestions which can lead me to better results. THANK YOU ALL, and especially for the caring help! Means a lot. I wish I could say in type what that means to me. I am somewhat emotional right now from realizing how much you guys and gals do care. I sure wish I had Pros here, or me in some studio with pros to do all you say to have done. But, since we all or most are just about in the same boat of wanting more on board, I will keep trying everything you all say to try. at almost 65, and some pain, (mentally and physically), with ear issues too, I want to keep improving, to have what we all are aiming for, a shot in the music business to have someone pick up a song, or use us in the studio. ANYTHING!, (Right)? I have been in bands, played with icons on stage, and had a pro producer say things, but was all BS, and was NOT in my corner after all. YOU all ARE! So, Thank you! Damn, I do RANT, as my wife says. Still a LOT of energy, despite, just like many here, including our founder, Brian. Music people somehow just keep going and going. Music IS Life for many of us.

John

Hi Johnny,

NIce melody, sound and vibe. Really admired the production. Cool listen. I will say I'm not a fan of the spoken word in song—I've never been in any song I’ve listened to—so not a critique of your tune really, just a personal thing. Regardless, everything else works perfectly for me.

Best regards,

Deej

Thank you. Deej

I told my wife, Cindy, before coming up here, that I am going to create and track a solo for that spoken word section. Being I am just outside Philly in South Jersey, I always heard the Philly sounds, and even tune pianos at those studios. It was normal for me to hear all those Sigma Sounds songs by singers sometimes talking in spots. But yeah, that era is gone, and so too should be my spot for the spoken word! When back to back posts point out the same not so liked treatment, I think maybe they hear it not as I do. (No affection for such a thing). I will today come up with something for that spot, that could fit in better. Thank you too! I aim to not just please myself, but listeners. I don't have the ignorance to think it's my way or the highway.

John

NEW Section for the Break for "Sorry Now":
https://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=13645652

The Spoken Word Vocal Is in baseball terms: "It's a Deep Long Drive!.......Watch This Baby!,,,,, It's OUTTA HERE"! (As many times called by Harry Kalas, the late, great Phillies Broadcaster).

Due to the honesty of Mike and Deej, I just created an instrumental section of several parts/instruments, to take the place of the spoken word vocal.

My wife and I like it a LOT better, so thank you both!

Now gosh, where is that Josh?!

Or anybody? Anybody? Bueller?

Lovely! It's truly amazing how removing that spoken word bit lightens the song. That part is reflective now.
Well done JD!

Thank You, Mike for such an effective suggestion. Same for deej. Yeah, I like it a lot better too. Did three tracks of simple, interwoven parts which enhanced the music tones and hooks that were already in place.

Thanks again!
Johnny

Johnny,

I meant to circle back on this one to hear it without the spoken word. Love this tune; the harmonies; everything about it. Makes me want to sing along listening to it—always a good litmus test. Think you nailed it with the instrumental in lieu of the spoken word. Huge difference for me, personally. Beautiful tune!

All the best

Deej

Thank you! It is better for you and Mike letting me know that spoken word section could be sent "Outta Here"! Glad you and Mike were honest with your correct for me thoughts. ONce I did the instrumental, I went, YES! Much better now. So, again, thank you for your caring advice.

John

A good friend asked to have "Sorry Now" somehow heard by those not hearing it yet. So, here's my shameless bump. Sorry Now! ha! Really though, Much Appreciated!

Who knows Sam Smith or the like? Johnny needs to buy a loaf of bread for his wife.

Hi Johnny D:

Enjoyed your "shameless bump" but when I saw the title... I wondered if I was going to hear a cover for "Whose Sorry Now?"... a title from a hit "back in the day"... a million years ago. I was pleasantly surprised. Thanks for sharing. ----Dave

Pretty song, Johnny. I imagine that it would appeal to a 55+ crowd. It is kind of reminiscent of elements found in performances by Donny Osmond, Roy Orbison, and Chicago.

While the song works as-is, the production needs major work to be ready for primetime. The various instrument patches sound dated. I would re-do the entire thing with updated sounds, trying to shape the dynamics at the end of phrases. There also needs do be some general EQ, reverb/ echo, and plugin work after the tracks are recorded dry.

While you made a valiant effort on the vocals, the post-production work on them needs help. The pitch correction is audible iin places and I'm sure you aren't looking for an autotune effect. You may in fact need to get another vocalist to lay down the track unless you are very intent on being the performer. If this is the case, I would suggest singing your song in some coffee shops and open mics around town for a few weeks to settle into the vocal a bit more, resulting in less need for adjustment in post.

In a pinch if you are really looking to release this in the near term, maybe consider forum member Michael Zaneski for assistance. His productions are release-ready and I've read that his rates are more than reasonable. He may even be able to make your original vocal tracks work if you still have them, unaltered. However, I would understand completely if you are using this song as an opportunity to increase your level of expertise in production with your home studio by doing it all yourself.

Also, be thinking about your marketing strategy to get the song sold. I would think that online sales for your demographic would center around YouTube, Facebook, iTunes and CD singles, perhaps generated from a simple service like kunaki.com. You could try a targeted YouTube ad as well as maybe some online banner ads in baby boomer-style magazines (local is better). You are welcome to quote me in your ad by writing some or all of "Is this Donnie Osmond's newest single?!?", "Sounds like Donnie Osmond cut a new record!" or something along those lines. You could even attribute it to jpfolks.com if that looks better than my name, after asking Mr. Whitney for permission.

The simplest marketing approach would be YouTube and Facebook ads. While I've never directly promoted download purchases online, I've been able to get very targeted "impressions" from both for 5 to 10 cents each when advertising various items including upcoming gigs and video views. So, you could reach 1,000 - 2,000 people for $100, hoping to get some traction and sharing. Of course, don't overlook free opportunities online to promote it, as well as paid placement, such as getting a popular classic pop/ rock blog to offer your track for free for a limited time, etc.

Another possibility would be what I mentioned with another tune of yours - shopping it around to up and coming bands to let them make it their own. There is enough musical value that it could be easily adapted to various styles and instrumentation. I could hear an acoustic Indie band along the lines of Mount Moriah performing this.

Thanks for sharing!

Moroon-Corey:

Thank you So MUCH for such a thoughtful, comprehensive reply! Wow! I wish I was in the market or of age to hone my singing skills to do the band thing again. I only quickly do the songs of mine to get them out in case someone with the technical skills you mentioned, and all else can take it and apply it to as you said, up and coming artists. I am about to turn 65, and have terrible Tinnitus and Hyperacousis. I barely hear what I;m doing here in this little open room upstairs. I guess my demos are for friends on facebook, and for whoever might want to take a song and play it for who knows who in the industry, so they can do it up proper in all aspects. I spend about 4 to 6 hours to track and sing, then edit, then mix. Pumping them out, I guess it all I do. I had just thought about trying to do the CD baby thing, but after thinking about it, you're right in the technical/dated sounds comments. I have one 1999 keyboard and an knock off electric, and a cheap acoustic guitar. Two usual vocal mics. Logic Pro x. I know Mike Caro, along with Zaneski would of course take it all up a few notches at least. NO money is being made by me in the last year and a half. I;m about to go on SS, which will be slim. So, as I appreciate your time and well thought out ideas for me, I am really only left with what I'm doing now. My best skill besides playing quickly what I imagine, is to be a band member. A Part of the puzzle. Keys mainly. But, those days are gone too, with the Tinnitus and all. Had to stop my band in 2011, SADLY. Sad for the guys too, for how I forced them to not have our 2LT band anymore.

Thank you So MUCH for such care and advice! I am just doing what most of us do, create and track some songs for our families to enjoy, HOPEFULLY! ha! I WISH someone would grab and go any of my tunes, to do it all up proper, with youthful singers/bands. The boomer style though I still have is another problem. Kids need to do their own thing. Thank you again!

Next up is my "Pictures Of Life", about looking through a picture album with someone, (The old way).

Very welcome, and understood, Johnny. That's a real bummer about the tinnitus. I know a musician who has it and it is a real game changer. Good for you, pushing through it and working around it so that you can still allow your creativity to bear fruit!

You know, the bass, piano, and high strings on your demo don't sound bad. If you wanted to cut out the other stuff, maybe add in some of your nice electric and acoustic playing, and find a drummer who would lay down a track, it would likely work a lot better. I would even be willing to do a gratis vocal and/ or trumpet/ brass track for it with no obligation to use them if you don't like them.

But then again, maybe it is good as-is for your purposes with fam and friends. I guess it just all depends on what you want to try and do with it.

Thanks!

Marron-Corey:

I appreciate your generous offer. With me not having pro contacts worth pursuing, (long story), I feel it would not be using your time for any of our benefits, music business wise. Very cool though, of your offer. Shows a lot about you. (Good parents, I bet)!

I am also a drummer,(of sorts). I don't play even part time these days, but when I do, it is like I never stopped. I think my pro sports tries before has my athletic abilities make up for non practice years. I can keep on the click, or ebb and flow as desired, along with doing even Buddy Rich type drumming. ODD for me too. It's like it's ALL TOO EASY. ??? When I do sit at my drums for someone who is over and doesn't know much about what I do, they think I am a drummer only. I tracked drums for two songs for a once top pro producer, who kept what I played in one takes. We punched in a few spots where he wanted more of the same for some accents in other parts of the songs. I LOVE the drums more than any instrument to play. Was my first band instrument. I was known as the drummer in the area when I was 13. (You hit my passion button it seems)! Ha! I might just grab the sticks after hitting send here! Ha! (BUT, now, with the needed thick headphones).

I would LOVE to be a current contributor in any studio for any style music, playing anything after creating hooks and such. BUT, as I have tried contacting studios to have zero replies of any kind, it feels like my days of being active in music outside of this room are in the past. I can't play out like I long to, (ears even hurt and ring after singing one song, from the damaged nerves being agitated by the sounds going through my mouth. WEIRD how that works. MY own voice KILLS me! haha! My mom always said that I play much better than I sing, but this is ridiculous! Ha!

Thank you again for such caring advice and especially your over the top offer to help me out! JPF is the place for just that kind of friendship. Many here have helped each other out here and there. Scott Campbell, Mike Caro, for just two. SO many more like yourself. Jody Whitesides, and on and on.

Best to you and family,
John

Very welcome, Johnny, and yeah, I'll give my folks just a little credit wink

Cool to hear about your drumming. My friend who has tinnitus is a drummer as well! I'd love to hear some Buddy Rich drumming from you. Maybe we can collaborate at some point down the road and at least get you out of your home studio in a virtual manner. I hope getting on the skins soon can be therapeutic for you!

Regards,

Maroon

Buddy Rich SORT-OF drumming, I should make clear. Being athletic and musical, I can fake a lot of stuff.

Right! We must all try to expand out of our comfort zone once in a while, or even often. After I was doing what I would term faking Buddy Rich, it started to become easier and easier to fake it! It might fool some who don't study Rich's exact strikes and speed and ALL. A few times, it fooled me! Ha! Then I watched HIM again, and KNEW I wasn't really that close. Damn!
