"LIFE IN BETHLEHEM TOWN" is a Christmas parody of "Life in a Northern Town" done by Sugarland, Jake Owen and Little Big Town.
I hope you enjoy it.
Merry Christmas to all.

VERSE 1
A heavenly star was displayed
And the shepherds watched so no one would stray,
The angels came praising God, praising God
And though the Inn was full this day
The stable had a manger and hay
This would be His birthday, His birthday

CHORUS
Ego eimi into our sight
(Phonetically – AYgo - ayMEE – Greek for “I AM”)
Ego eimi came like they said
Life in Bethlehem town

VERSE 2
They gathered near our Kingdom Come
Bringing glory ‘round the first-born Son
And all who saw and heard, were amazed
Mary pondered would her people be saved?
As the shepherds danced and praised
And Magi bearing gifts, are following, the star

CHORUS
Ego eimi into our sight
Ego eimi came like they said
Life in Bethlehem town
Alleluia!

Ego eimi into our sight
Ego eimi came like they said
Life in Bethlehem town,
All our hope is in You

VERSE 3
Glory to God in the highest
Peace to those on whom His favor rests
The Savior is born, Emmanuel
Now all people will come to know
As their hearts begin to overflow
Jesus is The Way, The Truth and, The Light

CHORUS
Ego eimi into our life
Ego eimi came like they said
Life in Bethlehem town
Deliver me, oh Lord

Ego eimi into our life
Ego eimi came like they said
Life in Bethlehem town
All our hope is in You

Ego eimi into our life
Ego eimi came like they said
Life in Bethlehem town
Alleluia!

Ego eimi into our life
Ego eimi came like they said
Life in Bethlehem town
Alleluia!

Sounds good! Great vocals. Just in time for the holidays.

I am not hearing the 'parody' here as there is no exaggeration to comic effect. I guess it fits under the parody use in the copyright act?

In any case, I liked it.

Peace,
TC

If it has strings I will find a way to play it!

TC,
Thanks for the positive feedback. Certainly no comedic effect in this one. Just meant for enjoyment during the Christmas season.

As for the legalities you mentioned, here are my thoughts. I found a parody can "aim for comment and/or criticism – not necessarily of the original work, but of something that is shown by the contrast between the original and the parody; and therefore is transformative from the purpose of the original to a new purpose, the common example is the original was serious, the new is silly". In this case, "Life in a Northern Town”, is a song tribute to Nick Drake, a British folk musician who committed suicide. It is a lyric about a small ship-building town in England experiencing lots of unemployment and despair. I also found references on the internet that theorized that "Nick Drake is the Sinatra-like figure referenced in the original lyrics and at the end, where the protagonist leaves on a train, that this is a metaphor for his death" and "he doesn’t “wave good-bye” because he committed suicide". From my perspective, Bethlehem was also a very small town at the time of Jesus' birth, approximately 250-400 people lived there and I’m pretty sure many were just scraping by at the time. Also, during His public ministry, Jesus would often “sit on the stony ground” and His followers would “come down to listen”. Then when “the evening turned to rain” Jesus ultimately leaves us too but instead of waving, or committing suicide, He opens His arms and embraces us all from His cross. That is the contrast that can be transformative.

Merry Christmas,
Skip

Hi Skip:

When I saw "parody" describing your Song's Title... I nearly decided to keep on searching... then I read your lyric and had to give it a spin. TC and Eddie spoke for me quite well. It is a beautiful song for a beautiful season. Thanks for sharing. ----Dave

Hi,

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I clicked on this. Parody had me confused at first too, like Dave, as I guess I think of "humorous" when I think of that word. Anyway, this is beautifully done. I like that it’s more than one singer. Makes it more inclusive to everyone as far as the message, if that makes sense. Really good vocals and production. Such a lovely song!

Kristi

if he is to be ultimately at peace with himself. What a man can be,
he must be. -- Abraham Maslow, American Psychologist

Thank you Dave and Kristi, for your kind remarks. I guess I will have to look at keeping more humor in these parodies in the future.
Happy New Year,
