Old Hamaan wants us all to stand To say his name out loud He cannot see the Son of man Is why we take a bow And we're soul seasoned Oh we're soul seasoned And my soul is not for sale
I see the buzzards circle Circlin' the sky They got the referendum No tears left to cry But I'm soul seasoned Oh I'm soul seasoned And my soul is not for sale
Don't tempt me on the mountain Or in the valley low I may have nothin' left to lose Nothin' but these bones But I'm soul seasoned Oh I'm soul seasoned And my soul is not for sale
His blood is runnin' Through my veins I got his DNA It's all my inspiration Dancin' in the latter rain
And I'm soul seasoned Oh I'm soul seasoned Yes I'm soul seasoned And my soul is not for sale
Cos I'm soul seasoned Oh I'm soul seasoned Yes I'm soul seasoned And my soul is not for sale No my soul is not for sale

Well! Ms Bailey! Nice to see a familiar face. I liked this. (I was hearing Gospel) The only line that was a letdown for me was this: "Dancin' in the latter rain"-I just thought a better line is needed.
Best of luck! -Mike

Thanks Mike. Been a long time. Glad to 'see' you here too. Great call on that line. I needed another pair of ears. Bailey

Hi, Bailey,
Overall, the lyrics have a resounding, spiritual feel. To me--and it's always hard reading lyrics absent the melody an artist may have in mind--I'm curious as to the transition of the first four lines of the verses to the "soul seasoned" (and thereafter) lines. I really like the language and vibe "soul seasoned" conveys. Just not sure I'm following the connection to what precedes it. But--and here's my personal view of trying to judge lyrics on their own--the true depth of lyrics are never struck until they are put to song. I can readily anticipate the power some of your lines will convey. Enjoyed my read very much.
Best regards,
Deej

Thank you Deej for your thoughtful and helpful critique. I was concerned about the meaning of "soul seasoned" coming through to the listener so your response was just what I was wanting to know! The hook is a few years old and just finally birthed a little premature song (was a bit out of practice haha) The music is leaning towards a Johnnie Cash sound but not exactly. Maybe late Cash plus something else. I will keep listening and playing it to see if it puts on some 'weight'.
Grateful for your time. I will return to offer responses as I feel I can after reading more here. I have been reading one of yours but will rest a bit before attempting to break out my rusty critiquing tools.
Nice to 'meet' you.
Bailey

I really like the imagery in this, and the definite gospel feel. I have just a couple of questions/suggestions. Keep or sweep, of course. Donna Soul Seasoned Don't tempt me on the mountain Or in the valley low I may have nothin' left to lose Nothin' but these bones But I'm soul seasoned Filled with sound reason Yes I'm soul seasoned And my soul is not for sale I see the buzzard circle Circlin' the sky Perhaps use a different dramatic verb or description here, as you use 'circle' in the previous line. Midnight revelation No tears left to cry But I'm soul seasoned Filled with sound reason Oh I'm soul seasoned And my soul is not for sale Old Hamaan wants us all to stand An audience might want to know who Old Hamaan is. I know the name only in the context of Haman being a major side-kick to the Pharaoh in Egyptian times (and referred to in the Koran). Are you using the name here as another name for the devil? Perhaps these first four lines could be a little more explicit? To say his name out loud He cannot see the Son of man Is why we will not bow But we're soul seasoned Filled with sound reason Oh we're soul seasoned And our soul is not for sale His blood is runnin' Not immediately clear whose blood this is. I presume the Son of Man's (in light of lines 3 & 4), but maybe consider making it more obvious.Through my veins Deep in my DNA It's all my inspiration Along this rugged way Oh I'm soul seasoned Filled with sound reason Yes I'm soul seasoned And my soul is not for sale I say I'm soul seasoned Yes I'm soul seasoned Filled with sound reason And my soul is not for sale No my soul is not for sale ~Bailey Bridges
