One of those songs that just pop into your head and then as you work on it the initial thought fades away and you're left with something completely different. The version on Soundclick has a longer intro than the Soundcloud one. Your thoughts welcome and encouraged. What a lively production, Vic. A wonderful contrast, between subject matter and arrangement. The way some cultures dance at a funeral, beautifully done. Really loved that fiddle throughout, it was like the glue to it all. BIAB?
The subject matter reminds me of Kenny Roger's "Rueben James". One of my all time favorite songs.

Nicely done country tune with solid production. I know you are from UK but it has a very Americana vibe.
I especially liked the guitar work - outstanding! The groove fits the tune perfectly.
I thought the mix was really good. I would have liked a tad more bottom end but what you did fits the genre well.
Really good!
Peace, TC

Excellent production and blending of sounds Vic.
The song is tight, the lyrics are compelling and the vocals are good.
Over, just a really fine production. Good job.

Vic,
Beautifully done from start to finish. Love the internal rhymes in the lyrics which really give this a structure and rhythm; the fiddle in the back adds sweet, sweet depth and richness. Really first rate and enjoyed this a ton.
Kindest regards,
Deej

Thank you Nelson. Yes, there are some great fiddle loops if you can coax them into the right gaps.

Morning, Vic:
What a nice way to start the day... listening to one of my favorite JPF artists singing one of his new songs... and doing that "Johnny Cash" thing again! It's funny how a song or lyric can "arrive on-scene" in the strangest way or time. Regardless, I'm so glad this one did. As always, I listened on Sound-Cloud and will try to come back later for the long intro version.
This one should "chart" if you can get it to the right person. I also believe this is one that could work well in several genres, Great write, performance and production... and, your vocal (as always) is "to die for." Enjoyed. Thanks for caring enough to share it. ----Dave

Hi Vic,
That opening verse floored me and is a beautiful piece of writing.
Nice how this still retains an outlaw-ish quality (the rolling train-ish 4/4 and minor chords) while being an unabashed "thank you" and declaration of appreciation and (at least) Platonic love to an unnamed "you." Some of Leonard Cohen's most powerful songs are second person, seemingly written to an unnamed individual.
Great work!!
Mike

Thank you TC. Never quite sure about the bottom end. What are you listening on? When I'm mastering it sounds ok but when I play it back on my hifi it sometimes has too much bass. Do you mean bottom end on the bass instruments or over on the whole mix?

Vic I monitor on Event 20/20 BAS with Sub, and headphones. I listened about 3-4 times to make sure. I thought it could use 1-2dB more (just a smidge) in the overall lows and/or a slight bump on the bass guitar. It sounds good as is though. The low end is always tricky, and I struggle with this a bit myself. --TC

I am listening again friend and I really like this melody and rhythm, it is very catchy and again, I really like that musical break, this is so enjoyable to listen to and the write is sweet. Always love spending time with your songs.

Hi Deej. If songs didn't have lyrics I don't think I'd write one. I have friends who play instrumentals, never vocalise. Don't know how they can do that.
Thank you so much for listening.

Hi Dave. Yes the journey of a song can take a few twists and turns. This one started off as a slow love song but somewhere along the line I ditched that idea.
Getting it to the right person isn't my best function. I may be the world's worst pitcher.
Thank you as always for your support.

Thanks Mike. That brought a smile to my face.
I wrote the song intending the "who" part to be anyone. Cohen's "Hallelujah" for one, has an unidentified "you".

TC. Thanks for the update. It's an accoustic bass loop so quite tricky to bring up the gain as some notes are a lot louder than the others. It's also pretty well compressed. I'll see if i can do something but maybe it'll have to stay as is. Vic

Thanks Pete. I agree. The slow ballad thing wasn't working. Sounded Manilowish. Vic
