We Need Real Farmers (Neil Cotton)
We Need Real Farmers (Neil Cotton)
Our planet is shrinking There’s less space to live Our numbers are growing Some falling off the edge Some will be starving Unless someone gives in
We need real farmers Not entrepreneurs We need real farmers Feeding the world We need real farmers Caring for the world
Applied technology Fewer people employed Seeds are changed genetic'ly Robots till the soil It‘s a labor of greed Not fam’ly and joy.
We need real farmers Not entrepreneurs We need real farmers Feeding the world We need real farmers Caring for the world
~B Working in the fields was a hands-on tradition Passed down from parents to brother and sister Now it’s just another corp’rate business
~C We need real farmers Not entrepreneurs We need real farmers Feeding the world We need real farmers Caring for the world
Repeat ~B then ~C
**************************************************************************** The planet is changing Running low on space to live Our numbers are growing Almost falling off the edge Those of us remaining Will starve if none gives in
We need real farmers In Agriculture Sweat, love and heart Not entrepreneurs We need real farmers Caring for the world
Applied technology Fewer people are employed Seeds change genetically Robot plants them in the soil It‘s a labor of greed Not of fam’ly and joy.
We need real farmers In Agriculture Sweat, love and heart Not entrepreneurs We need real farmers Caring for the world
Working in the fields was a hands-on tradition Passed down from parent to brother and sister Now it’s another corp’rate business Normal people can’t compete with this
We need real farmers In Agriculture Sweat, love and heart Not entrepreneurs We need real farmers Caring for the world

Hey, Neil,
I really like this one. Forgive me--this may be way out of bounds, and I've not done this since I've joined JPF and am leery to do so--but there was something that resonated in these lyrics and I couldn't help myself. I played around with the lyrics somewhat; and the outcome is below. Please, please, please disregard what I've done, and I hope you are not in any way offended. I just like what you had going on and before I knew it, well . . . Of course, I have no idea how it fits with what you might have in mind melodically--yet another reason to dismiss my suggestions.
At any rate, if nothing else, I hope it shows I clearly enjoyed the read.
Kindest regards,
Deej

Our planet is shrinking-- there’s less space to live; our numbers are growing, we're all on the edge; some of us starving; no one giving in.
We need real farmers to help feed the world saviors not harmers, not entrepreneurs. We need real farmers to help feed feed the world
Technology lessens the people employed; the seeds are genetic; the robots till soil; it‘s labor for greed; we're all lost in the void.
We need real farmers to help feed the world saviors not harmers, not entrepreneurs. We need real farmers to help feed feed the world

Sorry, Neil, I missed the tune in the MP3 forum--so didn't see that you already put it to music. Makes my suggestions somewhat moot--so take them, as always, for what they may be worth. Anyways, I'll give the tune a listen.
All the best,
Deej

I feel that both versions are worth merit; they have much to say that is real but largely being ignored. The "creed of greed" which took the helm especially from the 1980s forward has helped to destroy not only many family farms for the building of more shopping malls and office building, but many other family owned businesses as well. Makes me long for the days when, thinking about it on this day especially, retail was much less corporate than it is now. And you didn't quite this annual shopping feeding frenzy which has cut into the tradition of a sacred family holiday. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ekq-orTBzDE

the agrarian imperative theory . “People engaged in farming have a strong urge to supply essentials for human life, such as food and materials for clothing, shelter and fuel, and to hang on to their land and other resources needed to produce these goods at all costs.”
When farmers can’t fulfill this instinctual purpose, they feel despair. Thus, within the theory lies an important paradox: the drive that makes a farmer successful is the same that exacerbates failure, sometimes to the point of suicide. In an article, Rosmann wrote that the agrarian imperative theory “is a plausible explanation of the motivations of farmers to be agricultural producers and to sometimes end their lives”. The suicide rate in farmers is twice that of military veterans. Some are disguised as farming accidents.
