Raleigh, ya'll
...I had moved to a city where I'd never been before. I put together a band of very talented musicians to surround myself with, because I was/am not a talented musician. I was much more like Lawrence Welk, a band leader with limited talent, but I could remember the words to the songs:-) My bandmates all had Kewl nicknames that we'd put together: The Spider...The Iceman...Mo' Betta Heather, Lunchbox Jimmy, Barefoot Katy, The Fiddler...But on the third night of that Gig, I was still Bob Gustafson, without a kewl nickname, and was just leading the band, and I asked, because I'd lost track of the time: Does any know what time it is? And someone from the crowd hollered out: It's midnight, Bob....My bandmates assigned the nickname to me, with the caveat that I could never spell "midnight" properly again...

Please feel free to add your stories!!

Midnite

P.S. The band's name was "Jack Couldn't Make It"....Feel free to Google "Midnite Bob". You will find me, and a reggae band with a similar name whose music I've enjoyed for over a decade!

Satchel was right. Something is gaining on me.

My middle name is Dean.
Ronnie Dean to me anyways sounds more ready to go than the more pedestrian Ron Anderson.

Neat story Midnite. I agree Ronnie!

My first name is Carl, like my father but my family always called me by my middle name--Eddie (name actually Edward), and as an adult usually just go by Ed but still called Eddie by many. I played a lot more golf when I was a younger man and many friendly golf matches for friendly wagers. One Saturday about 25 years ago when several golf buddies including myself met up at a local golf course for some competitive golf fun, two paired golfers and another friend declared they were looking for a golf match. A couple guys including myself said I'll play--the guy looking for a partner said, " I'll take Eddie.......he's steady!" The name "steady-eddie" stuck! But gradually, most of my golf buddies shortened the nickname to just "steady." I still play golf occasionally, but years ago I played often. So when I started seriously writing songs, I just thought steady-eddie made a neat songwriter pen name, even though it's inception had nothing to do with my music interests.

steady-eddie

TC are just my initials but Gypsy came because I was always moving and/or touring when I was younger, and an old girlfriend sardonically called me The Gypsy. It stuck. I've lived in 11 different states and been all over the place so I suppose it fits :-p

Hi Bob:

I noticed your post a few days ago but did not have time to log-in and respond. I really enjoyed your story and it's a bit special to have been "named" by your band-mates. Thanks for sharing... and, lest I forget... Merry Christmas and a Happy 2018. ----Dave

About 10 years ago, I started playing out with my son. We were introduced one night by Stu Shapiro as The Heenan Brothers, and kept it. We added a mandolin player and good friend Rick Bauer. So we had a trio going for a couple of years. Son gets a real job and backs out. Me and the other Rick, Keep The Heenan Brothers moniker. Rick and Rick. Kind of like, my brother Daryl and my other brother Daryl.

Couple of years go by and we added a bass player that played a Rickenbacker and whose first name was Ken. No brainer, our bass player is Rickenbacker Johnson. In keeping this tradition, the next addition to our group was Ricky Bobbie Savoy playing harmonica. Got a little band of brothers from other mothers going. And that's the story that I'm sticking to
