Mike arranged produced and sings on this new song .
It is a first for me as both the composer and lyric writer
We discussed the song before hand and discovered we both have a love for contemporary Irish folk in particularly Christy Moore
Thanks Mike for all your work.

Kerry Moon

With many roads behind me
soon be travelling on
The magic and wanderlust
Slowly faded now its gone
V
often thought about us
dreamed i'd come back soon
To our simple little cottage
lit up by a Kerry moon
B
Nothing left to search for
only what could now be
You and i neath a Kerry moon
If you'll remember me

Music

V
I recall before I left you
you Sang a sweet Irish tune
Was in my heart through dark times
missed you and our Kerry moon

Repeat bridge

Verse 2

Kerry Moon till fade

The first time I've heard the uillean pipes on JPF? smile I love the way it weaves through the melody. Nicely done!

I was a huge fan of Planxty growing up. In fact, I learned the tin whistle mostly by playing along to their records. When Christy Moore went solo, I loved his "Ordinary Man" album. I saw him perform many years ago in Brussels and he came across as a bit obnoxious. Maybe just having a bad night.

Lovely collab, guys.
It does have a classic vibe to it.

I especially like how it goes back and repeats different parts. (bridge and verse 2) very cool

That drum... sounds like some sort of hand percussion panned right,
I'd love to get a bit of volume on that in the music parts and especially near the end of the song.

I'm also fawned of Irish folk music..... don't know any artist by name but love me some foot stompin and Irish bones.

Well done guys

Hi Travis and Mike.
An interesting and pleasing production.

Mike, I presume you are using auto harmonies as some of the vocal formants were quite noticeably unnatural to me, mainly in the lower register.
Maybe that's the effect you want though so that's fine.

Travis, it may be worth having another look at the lyrics as at the moment the verses and the bridge are mostly saying the same thing (He's been travelling and thinking he may come back soon).
You could explore ways of giving a good reason for his wanderlust in the first two verses. What was the magic, etc.
The bridge could explain his disillusion and the last verse left more or less as it is.
I realise that is almost rewriting the song but I think, as you've taken it this far it would be worth it.

Best of luck with it

Vic

It's never too late? Yes it is, so do it now.

If, given time, a monkey can write the complete works of Shakespeare maybe there's hope for me.

Thanks Vic
I always value your thoughts on story lines but to me it's a simple case of him going off in verse 1 ending up dissolutioned and ready for returning
Verse 2 He reminisces
Bridge he does both
3rd verse he recalls the moment and a song they shared ( yes more remiiscing)
This part i however is all important as it is aimed at a specific audience together with the title of course.

The rest is taken up with the bridge repeated in place of a chorus and a further repeat and of course an instrumental

That's how I saw it anyhow lol

There's probably a few typos here as my spell check has gone off somewhere being Sunday.

Cheers Vic
Always good to have comments as we know.
Not sure if it's possible doing a rewrite now but worth thinking about if it gets too many of the same comments

John

Hi John (Travis) and Mike:

I really enjoyed my listen. Many of us have Irish branches in our "trees" and County Kerry is especially important to me. Never got the chance to go but have flown over it many times on my way to London. I'm not an expert on Irish music but Mike captured the "sound and feel of it" for me. The lyric was simple, sweet and meaningful and I plan to return for another listen later today. Congratulations guys. Well done. ----Dave

Calvin, Ricki, Gavin, Neil, Nelson, Vic, and Dave:

Thanks for giving this a listen and your comments make me very happy.

John is an amazing writer. He can write about anything it seems, and "Kerry Moon" felt like he lived it.

As John said, we share a common love of Irish music and I wanted to sing more innocently here and get a warm intimate sound that I associate with much of early Simon and Garfunkel and Christy Moore.

Vic, I sang everything you are hearing. No auto harmonies. In fact, with the harmonies, I broke the work down line by line (and did more than a dozen "takes" for each, cuz I didn't want block thirds on everything, but something more organic and modal and associative with much Irish music, and so was favoring suspended seconds that mostly resolve upwards to the third. There may be a Melodyne artifact or two buried in there (that only another musician who uses the software will hear) but most of the work was as I sang it with little or no pitch correction, and I sang everything. The second bridge may be what you are referring to, cuz after I got all the harmonies locked in for both bridges, I thought I'd try something I never did before: I took the first set of bridge harmonies and pasted them directly on top of the second bridge's, and so there's doubled unison voicings that then spring into other intervals, and some unisons might create that formant effect of which you speak--but yes I really liked the thickening that happens in the second bridge..

Nelson, it never occured to me to bring the drums up there as there was so much going on to begin with, there near the end. Uillean pipes soloing on one channel, a fiddle soloing in the other, and me singing "by a Kerry Moon" on top of that. The rule of KISS was already being violated, lol..and so that's why the drums aren't competing.

Thanks again, all.. smile

Mike

Hey guys!

What a wonderful song & production. This song is definitely unique, and I really enjoyed my listen.

This is beautiful and I have no real nits, but do have a sug on a potential vocal arrangement tweak. I would experiment losing the harmony on the first two lines of the bridge, but do USE harmony on the 3rd line climax, then lose the harmony again on the resolving 4th line of the bridge----why?......I think the bridge is the perfect place to digress more so from the established harmony to empower the bridge's deflection. If there wasn't harmony in the verses, I might express the exact opposite, but DO like the harmony in verses. My thoughts on losing that bridge lower harmony may enhance the bridge identity, personalize/dramatize the lead singer, and actually/ironically give more lift by by spotlighting the higher lead vox.

Honestly it's fine as is, but just feel this arrangement tweak may enhance and evoke more emotion. "use/lose/infuse"

Great Lyrics Travis and concept--good to see you composing a melody too man! A real gem here! Nice performance/production Mike! I wasn't sure what a "Kerry Moon" was.......so I googled it thinking it may be an expression like a "Harvest Moon"--but did discover it is a town in Ireland!

Pretty.

Liked hearing the drum back in the distance. Mike always does something that never would have occurred to me. I hate that... and like it at the same time. smile

Travis: (...or John if you prefer)

Lest you think I favor the Irish over the Welsh... rest at ease. I consider myself Welsh first, then... because my ancestors accompanied Strongbow (the Earl of Pembroke) as he invaded Ireland before it was a real nation... we remained there for more than 500 years before Cromwell banished us to Barbados and Virginia. Celtic music has many similarities but evolved in at least three different directions over the years. Like all music, I enjoy some but not all genres or styles.

You and Mike have captured the feel of what I consider to be a more gentle Irish variation and to me, it is special above the rest... and yes, I enjoyed my second listen. ----Dave

Hi Ed
How are you?
Technical twears I will pass on to Mike but having said this is really like the bridge but of course it can be improved on . The lyric on second thought can also be tweaked re. Vics comments but generally the song has been well received mainly due to Mike' part.
Good to know you like it Ed
Thanks again for suggestions

Just to clarify, when I feel/hear in my mind what I think "might" be a better approach, it doesn't mean the "proofs not in the pudding." Many times I make changes to my own music/lyrics or arrangements that I think will improve, but they do NOT in actuality, in which I'll return to what I originally had. Sometimes a tweak can confuse me as well, as both ways sound good!

BTW, what's a technical twear?

Thanks Eddie, Martin, and David,

I appreciate you listening and I glad you enjoyed John's finely crafted song.

Eddie, when I'm in pro-demo mode (working for clients, etc.) I feel compelled to put two harmonies on all the lines of a chorus (or a repeated bridge which is the same thing, functionally) at least to do the work and then go from there--peeling off parts as need be--and in fact BEFORE I did that, I thought to myself, "I probably won't end up using the harmonies on the last line of the FIRST chorus (bridge) --I'll let the lead vocal just sing that so the song breathes better." And in fact that is usually what I do with songs where I'm singing harmonies in V2 and V3 (after a bridge or chorus). But in this case, once I heard the work, I never thought about that again, lol. I guess it's cuz I really liked the sound of them. Not so different from Narcissus hypnotized by his reflection, I suppose..but this occasionally happens. Ethically, I feel compelled to do the work and get all the harmonies in place and then go from there, and yes, sometimes I can be seduced by the work I've done (lol..not proud of that, but it happens to the best of us I think?) and I think they sound nice, but of course, structurally, I think letting go of the harmonies of the last line of the FIRST bridge makes the most sense in terms of creating space and better narrative pacing.

BTW, Eddie, you are the most sincere-est guy I know, in terms of critiquing. I always trust where you're coming from. Never worry about saying it how you feel with me.

I don't mind creating an alt version with harmonies out on line four of the first bridge--or ANY changes that John might want. He knows to just inform me in an email or here even, it's all good. smile

Mike

Hi Mike
I think at the moment I'd like to stay with the song as it is.
But grateful of the opportunity to offer changes in the future .
I truly love the sound you created from my raw demo
Thank you and all who have commented and supported this project.
I've wanted to write an Irish/ folk song for a while and pleased it's turned out so well

Travis,,,written like its personal, I like that ..brings me closer to the song.

"It is a first for me as both the composer and lyric writer" I personally think this has just the right amount of everything my friend.
so I`ll just say what a super job you`ve done here Travis.

I don`t think there is a song Mike can`t find the heart for, always brings that with him in his work.
the song is very well written and produced, "Hats off the Mike! also always great vocals in the songs

Great job Guys! Lane

I heard yesterday that the song is under consideration from a UK fold group called the Houghton Weavers. They used to have their own national TV and radio series in their heyday and four albums which charted here in the UK.
So fingers crossed they might take up the song.
Also there's interest from an Irish based music publisher.

Got an email this morning from Aardvark Records in the UK.
Dear John,

I work for Aardvark Records and listened to your song Kerry Moon, which I like.

I do a radio show for new music on SourceFM in Cornwall and would like to play your song.

Please send MP3 if you would like it played and please make the filename "Artist name - track name."mp3 so that is what I see in the studio to announce it

Best regards

Sophie

Thanks Lane!

Thanks Dave!

Wow, John.. smile

That's exciting news!! The Houghton Weavers are interested--just wow..

And how great is that about Aardvark Records and radio exposure--that's just fantastic. But you deserve the attention your song will garner--it really has feeling in it, and I'm glad I was able to help get that across.

Cheers,

Mike

This is a very sweet song, love the harmonies, I know how much work that is, I went back and forth on whether I wanted more drums, sometimes I think so, but I like how it is. I enjoy your artistry and choices and this was very relaxing to listen to, great collab!

Thanks, Lane!

Thanks Tammy! Yes, the harmonies always take longer for me than the lead vocal. The second harmony is the trickiest--I always hear my Theory Teacher (in my mind) saying "uh uh..parallel fifths there, what is this Medieval music?" lol...

Got two emails from the BBC that the song is to get further plays on Radio Cumbria's Introducing show.
The show is aired live Thursdays and a repeat Saturday

It's really wonderful to hear this wonderful song has been played... and will be played again over there. Seems to further point out the fact that our world is shrinking because of our ability to communicate with each other. What better way to honor two of our JPF stalwarts. Congratulations to both of you. ----Dave

Travis and Mike,

Boy, I don’t know how I missed this one. Brilliant, lovely—don’t know why the vocal reminds me of John Mayer, just does. Well, well done, gents!
