Jane Godfrey, a singer-songwriter out of St. Louis, wrote a song titled "Donuts and Daydreams", inspired by a woman who inherited a donut shop following her parents' deaths in a hit-and-run crash. To me it is one of the most dramatic songs I have ever heard. I went to see her perform upon a visit to Chicago this past summer. She had mentioned that an article about this woman's life had been published in the newspaper and that her life was really not at all like it was in the song. This gave me an idea for a potential sequel, and here is the lyric I wrote. I send a copy of it to Jane via her Facebook page but so far don't know how she liked it. Lyric is below, and following that will be the link to the original song.

I WAS THE DONUT LADY

c2017 Brian Beecher

Once I was the donut lady
Started at age twenty-one
Once I was the donut lady
With no time for having much fun

It didn’t seem like time was on my side
But with the rest of the world
I would walk with pride
Cause once I was the donut lady
With nothing much to hide

Once I was the donut lady
Cannot deny it was hard
When I was the donut lady
Had a longing to make a new start

But folks would come to the shop
Who would make my heart sing
Therefore I’d feel the joys
That each of them would bring

And while I was the donut lady
Made to focus on just one thing

While the universe was telling me
To do cartwheels
Deep inside I had a longing
To kick up my heels

So one day I took leave
Just to see how it feels
Because when I was the donut lady
My accomplishment mixed with the tears
But I would overcome my fears
