I can sure understand why this is one of your favorites. It's "pitchable" material and I believe we will be hearing this one on the pop radio stations soon. The last time I was on a 747 we were headed for Honolulu on vacation. We climbed up to the lounge and enjoyed golf stories from Chi Chi Rodriguez (the sword-fighting golfer) who just happened to know our Club Pro. Small world.

A really nice sound you've got going on here. Well produced, nice depth. I love, love the bridge, how the sound and melody really contrast against the verse. I would have liked just a little variation in the vocals and melody within the verses, particularly given the bridge is short--but that's just my personal preference, and my opinion certainly shouldn't merit much. It's really fine as is, and something to be proud of. Well done!

I became emotionally connected to this song the minute I heard Lane's simple demo. Something about that five note repeated vocal melody over those changing chords combined with his lyric--I found it all really moving, and in the spaces between sections, I realized that I wanted to keep the melodic/chordal thing pushing forward, and humming the melody gave the song the perfect feel I was looking for, almost like a vigil. Maybe something I remembered Mocedades (Spanish group) doing ages ago..

Lane's lyric and song says so much to me and I feel lucky and appreciative to be given such beauty to keep alive and share..

Pretty song and I like the way the intro sneaks the vocal in.

Not sure whether you want a comment on the visuals but I feel the images (though nice) could be slowed down to suit the music.
Maybe linger a little longer on each clip (no shorter than 4 or 5 seconds). At the moment they are rushing by like it was a fast paced rock song.
Might be worth having another go at it.

Usually when I work with video it's much more on the abstract side. I think the problem with this video is it comes stumbling out of the gate and starts ahead of the music and the opening photo is there for just a split second, and so I wanted to fix that so the video isn't starting out unsure of itself. It also ends with too many pictures too fast as well. For the most part, each photo gets the spotlight for 5-6 seconds. I used just 30 over the course of the song and that averages out to one every 5-6 seconds (30 divided by 170 seconds). Each photo has a few variations while it is showing. I wanted each line in the song to have one image to accompany it (while allowing each photo to move and/or vary), I also wanted the pictures to react to the audio/midi, and I wanted the overall "look" to be rather dreamy, so I used the Orton effect (double the video and add a blur to one of the copies and blend the two together) to soften the images.

The picture/variations thing is something I'll stick to for this particular project cuz I like seeing a photo then a variation of it, then another, and reacting to the music before the next one occurs with the next line of the song (I don't feel like it makes things too busy), but seeing some merit in there being "too much information" traveling by too fast, I posterized (used the "darken" blend mode) the video, and that reduces the detail a bit and so it's easier on the eyes. Plus it really brings up the "mist" and "dreaminess" which is what I was going for.

I have much to learn about making this kind of video so I totally appreciate your comments.

Highly emotive piece that tugs on the heartstrings.

I love the timbre of the vocals especially the lush highs - it really helps the vocals impart charm. It does need some (additional) de-essing being careful not to lose that sheen.

The overall performance and production are excellent. I agree that Mike Z. captured the essence of this song nicely!

De-essing is so essential to getting a vocal just right, and doing it manually (automated volume adjustments) is my preference, since each ess, to me, is an ugly snowflake that will only sound worse if dealt with by rote. And I do make at least two passes over a vocal, adjusting esses one at a time. Once in a while I might miss an ess and sometimes I'll leave a louder one in there on purpose, as long as it's not piercingly shrill. My aim is for a naturalistic sound, and esses are part of our language's soundscape.

Thanks for listening and I'm glad you liked it! Lane wrote one that really was hard for me to sing at first cuz it was making me too emotional. I realized that I had to "use that" while not letting it overtly show.

This next comment has nothing to do with your production, and everything to do with de-essing. Your comment reminded me of something I thought I would share with folks.

I don't know if you have Melodyne or not but I use this now to de-ess my vocals. I am still perfecting it but I am getting so much better results than using compressor/sidechain. I may use a traditional de-esser too in the chain but very lightly now. De-essing is one of the hardest things to do on a sibilant vocal, in my opinion. I have always struggled with this, and it's really difficult to get just right.

In Melodyne you use the 'note seperation tool' to divide the hard consonants from the tones of the voice. You can then pull down the amplitude of those S and T dudes surgically. It's time consuming but you can be so much more precise than using a plugin or outboard compressor. There are videos on their website, and youtube on how to do it.

You may already know this trick but other folks may find this useful if they use Melodyne.

TC, I did that very thing using Melodyne for at least a couple years, then recently in an effort to streamline my workflow I eliminated "ess-chopping" in Melodyne cuz I figured since I was making an additional pass over all the vocals using my DAW's tools, that I could eliminate the ess-chopping in Melodyne.

Also, sometimes when chopping the ess from the pitched material, the ess moves or jumps to what Melodyne is calculating that ess' pitch is, and sometimes it actually changes the timbre of the ess to something much less naturalistic sounding..so this added to my decision to quit that practice.

But it's a totally sound practice and sure beats the hell out of de-essers. But I can resize the visual of my vocals in my DAW to where the esses clearly present themselves, and so we are basically using the same technique using different tools..so I am in total agreement with you about limiting the use of a specialized "de-essing" compressor.
