Thanks to Ben Willis for letting everyone know about my medical situation. Here's the basic story so far.

Sherri and I went out west against a premonition she had that we should stay close to home in North Carolina. I insisted we go. We had 13 days to make the trip but something told us to come home early. I was fine one night and couldn't stay awake the next so Sherri had to drive from Indianapolis to NC.. That night I got chills that were more like convulsions. Took an ambulance ride to the ER, They said it was probably a virus and sent us home. Got similar chills the next night so we went to the family doctor the next day. He thought I had a Urinary Tract Infection and sent me home. That night I had the chills again and couldn't breathe. Went to the ER again and don't remember anything of the next 5 weeks, four of which I was in a medically induced coma.

I spent 13 weeks in various hospitals before I came home last week. It started out with pancreatitis which went to my blood stream, making me septic. Then I got ARDS (adult respiratory syndrome) which went to pneumonia. Got put on a ventilator and a trach. Eventually got off the ventilator but will be sporting the trach with oxygen for some time due to the condition of my lungs which are full of scar tissue. Then my bowels locked up. I also have a mass growing on my pancreas and multiple abscesses on my liver. Those haven't been addressed yet.

According to my wife, Sherri I was on death's door for several weeks without much hope of survival. Thanks to lots of prayers from across the nation and God's grace I'm doing much better. I had to re-learn to feed myself, sit up up on the side of my bed, stand up and walk with the aid of a walker. Now I'm about ready to walk with a cane around the house 14 weeks later.

That's the short story version. Lots of what I call "God things" took place around those events that are beyond coincidence in scope or number. I may address some of those at another time.

Sherri was with me every single day for nearly 100 days. She would go into work, drive an hour or more each way to the different hospitals and stay with me a few hours then back home and to work the next day, starting all over again. She learned all the medical lingo and concepts the doctors used and challenged them when necessary. And when no one wanted to make decisions about dealing with some of my conditions she jerked a knot in their collective tails and got things moving. She saved my life many times during this whole period as well as showing me a kind of love I never knew could exist. She's been through hell through all this. I wasn't there consciously for a good portion of it. I am truly blessed.

Steve

Glad to see you are on the mend after such a trial. A good wife is a valuable asset. Would love to hear about the "God things" you mentioned.

God bless.

Great to see you are getting better, Pal.

I only met Sherri once, but that's enough to know that nothing you've said above about her is the least bit surprising. Strong wives make for strong husbands. smile

Keep on healing!

Stevie,

Great hearing from you! Very glad you are up and about and on the mend. It's hard to imagine all those things going wrong at once. You are probably lucky you were unconscious for much of it but that must have been tough on the family. Anyway, keep us posted on your healing.....we are ready to hear some new stuff from the Rickenbacker.

Glad to have you back Stevie. It sounds like you've gone through hell and back and hope you start writing songs about how your experience changed you. I went through a similar experience and was close to deaths door but somehow I'm still here. I wrote about my cancer story AND my 9 months of hell at my facebook page. If anybody wants to come and friend me I love to get new facebook friends.

Let us know how if any this has changed the way and type of songs you are thinking of writing in the future......I've had another experience that also changed me in so many ways especially the directions of my songs......

Wonderful that you're back on deck, Stevie. smile

You've been through quite a 'time of testing'! I imagine a lot of great songs/music will emerge from the experience. smile

Hi Stevie,

My goodness, what a heart-rending story. Life is so fragile and unpredictable. Very humbling..

Good to hear you're up and about!

God bless..

Stevie,

AWESOME to hear directly from you. You and I share the great fortune of heroic loving wives who seem to have a lot in common. Give her a hug from all of us for taking such good care of you! She saved your life plain and simple. Sadly most people aren't as lucky as you and I and are either too timid or too scared to stand up for themselves or their loved ones. Thankfully Sherri and my wife Linda are different.

It makes me mad how often Docs ignore symptoms and blow patients off. This should be a lesson to all: YOU are in charge of your healthcare and Docs are your employees doing your bidding for pay. Never forget that. My life would have ended multiple times if I accepted bad diagnoses from a myriad of careless Doctors. If you have persistent symptoms, perhaps one blow off by the medical people is tolerable assuming you see immediate improvement within the next 24 hours. If not, go back in, fire the doctor if you must and get help. No one cares as much about your life as you (and perhaps your spouse) does. So if you are sick or advocating for someone in your family or even a disabled friend (I have lots of experience with this) you MUST insist on resolution of your issue and if that one won't give it to you, find another. You're just someone they come across on a given day.. you aren't special to them, you aren't important to them and frankly outside of getting sued, most couldn't care less about you. They have to learn to be that way to be able to accept the sickness, deaths and tragedies that would otherwise eat them up, but that doesn't excuse outright negligence and malpractice by omission. Folks, PLEASE be proactive with all types and levels of doctors. Don't accept ho-hum treatment. It sounds like it nearly cost Stevie HIS life and I've had several Doctors who did the same, but fortunately we learned to battle them almost like warfare (along with Insurance Companies) in time to keep them from killing me though they've cost me a lot of severity to damages caused by their poor treatment.

Don't be silent or you may never get another chance to speak up again.

Welcome back Stevie! We've missed you brother!

Brian

Man you just said a mouthful Brian and I can attest to this in my personal health story. Unfortunately my wife is not a caregiver or advocate for me but I still love her. We are the most important person in our health care team and never forget it. Docs are busy and can barely remember who you are. I learned that Marcus Welby is not around anymore. Doc while mostly terrific can't really do much for you except surgery or take away some symptoms. In my case with cancer all they have is Surgery, Radiation(Nuking you) and Poison and none of those cure you. Don't panic into treatments until you get a few opinions and even then use your God given commonsense. Never let family or friends bully you into treatments you don't want.....

Hi Steve,

When I read about what you've gone through above, I feel a little guilty for complaining about some of my own minor aches and life's headaches. You keep mending and be patient; and know many of us have had you in our thoughts and prayers. I was going through some my music collection vids and saw Paul McCartney (Wings performance) in a "Michelle" video performance where he was playing a six string to the song--but I thought of his Hofner Bass guitar, which I then thought of you because I know you have one; realized that I missed you--so howdy! Get well soon!

Ed

Hi Stevie,

I JUST saw this!!!! It's SOOO awesome to see that you're feeling well enough to give this update!!! I'm just delighted to hear of your progress!!

Lisa

P.S. And I agree with Ed! He should feel guilty for complaining about his own minor aches! smile

I haven't been on the computer much since last time I posted as I haven't gotten the fine motor skills back in my fingers yet. Typing is a slow, awkward process. Thanks for thinking about me, Ricki.

I'm doing miraculously well according to all the doctors and friends who saw me at my worst. Apparently things were even more dire than I was originally told. I'm off of oxygen, have my trach out and can walk without support except on long walks where I still use my Rollator, the walker with four wheels and a seat. I just use it when I walk a half mile or more. I try to walk every other day for a mile or sometimes a little more and keep up a decent pace at that.

Making music is a bit out of the picture for now as I can't play guitar for the same reason typing is so hard, plus weakness in my hands and fingers is still an issue.

Again, thanks for asking about me, Ricki and everyone else. As I said, everyone from the doctors down say I' m a miracle.

Awesome news, Stevie! You've been on a long, hard road. It's great to hear about your progress as we're still thinking about you. Check in on us now and then. With all this talk about miracles, should we be calling you Stevie Wonder now? Oh wait...that one's taken... grin

Great news, Stevie:

Recovery is usually a slow, tedious process but you are "up to the task!" Keep us posted when you feel like it. Meanwhile, you remain in my thoughts and prayers. ----Dave

Just reading this and the old man had something similar. When an internal infection hits it is evil at best. He was brought to the VA hospital DOA but they brought him back and it took well over a year for things to get back to what would be considered semi normal.

Just as a precaution keep a close eye on any symptom, no matter how small it may seem. An illness like his and yours has repercussions but are doable as long as you keep vigilant.

The one bit of advice I would give you are already doing. Exercise. Even with repercussions him being fit has been beneficial and sped up recoveries. Even now 7 years later we both go to the Y 4 days a week.

Wish you a full recovery and it will take time but be patient.

As a 3 time major stroke survivor who had to relearn to walk, talk, type, swallow food without choking etc. each time one hit, I can at least offer you the hope that things will gradually improve and where things don't improve your body and mind will adapt to overcome the problem. Hang in there and keep us in the loop.

Steve

Stevie, I am just now in shock after reading that just now. I sure hope you are better by now, and will read on down after I post this.

Get Well NOW, if not already,

Oh Stevie, even though you can't yet do music, you have been and are, as the doctors claim, a miracle! Keep making positive strides and one day, you could very well be playing that bass and guitar again. I am still in shock just learning about your first few days. You are on your way to better and better days. Great that you have Sherri to help you in every way! Wishes go out for her too, in every positive way.

John

I am just reading this now, Stevie and am so glad to see that you are making such progress after your ordeal. I don't know you, but I am a close neighbor in Conover, NC. I am sure you are surrounded by friends, but if there is anything I can do to help, let me know.

Just Plain Quotes
"A lot of people will tell you that preparation is what will make you successful. But I think that people misunderstand exactly what that means sometimes. The type of preparation you need most is the kind that allows you to instantly seize an opportunity, change your course based on a momentary circumstance, and grab hold of the totally unexpected when it happens, and allow it to take you for the ride of your life! That is the kind of preparation that can lead to the most enjoyable type of success." -Brian Austin Whitney
