Hi Jon:

Welcome to JPF. I really enjoyed "Gypsy Soul" and look forward to hearing more of your work. I saw your comment over at Martin's "Stole Forever" post and it looks like you're about to "winter" in Kanaka Land where I spent a few years. If you plan to stay in Oregon for a while before taking off to Honolulu... Joe Wrabek also lives in Oregon and participates here. Joe writes some of the most rib-splitting songs I've ever heard and has a catalog of his songs available to aspiring or already-there artists (like you) to sing if you would care to be considered for one of his next albums. He invites others to "take a crack" at his songs... and if he likes what he hears, he will add your song to the next album he will have created with several other participants. I tried it last time and liked it. No money involved or hoops to jump through... just thumb through his catalog (on-line for free) and if you find something you like, check with him (via PM here at JPF) and make sure your selection isn't already taken on the track-list. (Or not!)... this may not be of interest to you at all... and I have "no dog in the hunt" other than to introduce folks to one of the most interesting writers I've ever experienced.

Meanwhile, wishing you all the best and hoping you've found a home here on the "net" at JPF. ----Dave

Nice feel to this one, Jon. Just wondering about the phrase in V2 "under a Chevy van"?

Lots to like in this verse, very visual:

Yeah the moonlight on the highway
the stars fell from the sky
radio playing low
another midnight lullaby

Well done.

Ricki

Hey Ricki, thanks for the reply.

The line about the miles under a Chevy van comes from a song that was on one of my previous albums, I forget which one now. But there was a song titled "Moving On" on that record that was about some of my travels, running around the country playing music in a Chevy van.

"A thousand miles of highway
under a Chevy van
I emptied out the ash tray
at a roadside peanut stand
I took a look around me
not knowing where I was
but I'll get there
yes, I'll get there

Arkansas by morning
catch up with old friends
yeah Kansas and the corn fileds
was more than I could stand
I never wanted nothin'
I guess that's what freedom is
everywhere
yes, everywhere.."

So that line is a bit of continuity with another song about rambling, from the past... a common theme in my life.

Another tid bit about this song:

I don't have more than a handful of "fans" but most of them have followed me for years now and most of them share a love of Todd Snider's music. He has a sort of cult following that stays in touch via the "Shithouse Wire" where members are "Shitheads" in the "Shithouse Choir". A lot of us in that circle are songwriters and performers. The rest are spread out across the country and we meet up at shows, we open up our guest rooms and couches to each other, we help pay for each others funerals, at this point, as we are all reaching the age where "he was so young to have a heart attack" isn't a strange phrase any longer. But I digress. The line in this song that says "... the saddest song I've ever known, "I feel like missing you today"" that is a nod to Todd Snider and one of the songs that has endeared him to his fans. He wrote it for his father, and anyone who has been through that sort of loss and knows that song, holds it close to their hearts. It's that sort of song.

Thanks again for the reply!
