Hi all. I don't tend to write songs with political angles, but I found myself quite engrossed and bothered by much of what I saw from the new administration this past year. I understand this song might not be received well by some, and I don't mean to disrespect anyone's views/beliefs (and I hope I haven't), but I thought I'd share it nonetheless. It felt like something I had to write... Good, bad, indifferent. The song is called '45', and it was inspired by the President and by the contentious summer of 2017.

Song link: Click here to listen to '45'

Lyrics:

A man of privilege
A man of heights
A hollow image
Up in lights
A man of means
Who loves to spend
Overseen
By distant friends
That's the caliber of 45
Cloaked in gold, and lies

He protects his money
And all his men
Up the hill rats scurry
To defend
He protects his own
The rest can fail
While all we've known
Is now up for sale
That's the caliber of 45
Cloaked in gold, and lies

He's a man of the people
But wears a crown
Says we're equal
But not black or brown
He's a man for the ages
A king for a fee
He loves the stages
Just not you or me
That's the caliber of 45
Cloaked in gold, and lies
That's the caliber of 45
He's cloaked in gold, and lies

Good lyric. Good playing. Good vocal. Well done! At first I thought it may need a break, but then I thought your vocal was interesting enough that it wasn't necessary.
Glad I opened this.

Hi Phil:

I read the lyric first, knew we would be on opposite sides of the "message of the song" but thought you performed well... for some reason, your vocal sounds a bit like Toby Keith to me but it could be these "tinny" laptop speakers. I don't recommend you spend much time on political material if you plan to go far with your career in music (if that is your objective) especially if you plan to exploit the American Market.

I also write political "jingles" such as, "If God is a Democrat... I'll see you in Hell!" but I don't post it because I don't want to rile half the people in the US... even though it might stir up the Trump base... of which I am a reluctant part. Reluctant because I don't agree with everything he says and does... but in my opinion, our only other choice was a woman with an ego as large as "Big Ben" and a penchant for lying about destroying servers. True, she stood by her man when he was obviously cheating on her right there in the Oval Office. (Any other decent woman would have told Slick Willy to get ready for the papers to be served.)

Her desire for power overshadows her conscience... and I doubt she even has one. I won't even mention Harvey Weinstein's political contributions to her.

Enough of my rant. You have a great deal of talent and I wish you the best of luck with it. I also promise not to write a Jingle about your Nation's Political situation... even though I am an Anglophile and great admirer of your Country and it's History.

Regards, ----Dave

I enjoyed the song a lot. Good word play on president 45 to the gun. I can't believe i did not think of that. Great performance and recording.

Thanks for listening and for commenting Calvin, Pete, Dave, and David. Much appreciated. Dave, just to clarify, I am an American who happens to live in the UK.

Hi, Phillip,

The vocal and performance on this tune are killer--it's awesome as is. But to Dave Rice's comments above, and purely from the perspective of trying to sell this tune, I'd humbly suggest making the lyrics less politically concrete. That is, this song has so much going for it. I think you can keep the vibe without the specific political--i.e.,your lyrics hit a broader and yet compelling theme that resonates regardless of the reference to 45. That may make the tune more accessible to folks regardless of their political leanings. Not sure that makes sense. Just trying to say, it's so, so well done--vocals and performance--everyone should appreciate it.

All the best,

Deej

Wow, Phillip, powerfully written and executed. It's a shame just how accurate it is. Well done.
