This is a song done by The Other Day. It is from our debut recording: Night Flowers. Jennifer Skates sings the lead and plays the trumpet on it. I wrote the music and my wife, Catt and I wrote the lyrics. It was written with The Day of the Dead celebration in mind is about a couple who dances together each year at that time throughout all of eternity ...so it's a love song. I hope you enjoy it.

It would be helpful if you could include the lyrics so we can read along. I can hear it being played in a little cantina! smile And welcome to JPF.

I "second" Ricki's welcome to JPF:

When I was a teenager I would spend hours each night listening to my radio at my bedside. I would listen to WLW in Cincinnati where American Pop music was the ""bill of fare" and later, turn the dial to the Mexican Stations transmitting a very strong signal in our direction. Rancho music was my preference but I began to appreciate all kinds of Latin music.

At that time, "The Day of the Dead" was pretty foreign to my culture and frankly, most of us thought it was a bit creepy. With age and understanding, the connection of that Celebration with Aztec and probably Mayan cultures made it clear that it's importance was great to indigenous people for centuries.

The recording is slightly "muddy" on laptop speakers and the vocal is submerged a bit by the music. Ricki's suggestion about the lyrics would be helpful. It is a good song idea and I wish you well with it. I look forward to hearing more from you.

All the best, ----Dave

Thank you so much for the welcome and feedback! My mistake for not including the lyrics:

We meet again this special night
As the sun goes down and the fires burn bright
We meet again in our usual place
A familiar smile comes across your face

You take my hand and we begin
The tango to a mariachi band
Fireworks splash color across the skies
But they don't match the sparkle in your eye

Dance with me, dance with me
Into the arms of eternity
Dance with me, dance with me
Mi Flor de la noche.

We move together, our hearts entwined
I'm forever yours, you're forever mine
Forever more there shall always be
This night, this dance and you and me

Dance with me, dance with me
Into the arms of eternity
Dance with me, dance with me
Mi Flor de la noche

The gate swings open and our love is set free
To dance across forever
These old stones mark those who have known
We've always danced together

All of the flowers of this night
Are remembered each year by candlelight
Each counted as a step in the dance of time
Forever yours, forever mine

Another dawn begins to break
Soon these mortals will awake
We'll met again a year from now
To make good on our timeless vow.

Dance with me, dance with me
Into the arms of eternity
Dance with me, dance with me
Mi flor de la noche

I really enjoyed listening to this. My only reservation would be that sometimes there are an awful lot of words crammed into one line. This can be a bit awkward for a singer, especially as English has so many more final and initial consonants than Spanish.

Yeah, I did not get all that so, thanks for posting the lyrics. I love the story and the music is perfect for it. My only nit, like Gavin suggested, you could do some trimming without compromising the lyric and then it wouldn't feel so busy. Well done overall.

Hello,

Nice to meet you & WELCOME to JPF.
Wow, what a nice fresh sound you have.

ps.....I agree about trimming a few words here & there.

Guys,

What a great song--loved it. I think you have a good music balance going on with good EQ tones for sure. The mix sounds pretty good on my head phones. There are a couple spots where lyric "prosody" could maybe be improved as others have mentioned. Nice vibe, nice performance--loved the trumpet especially and harmonies well performed.

Thanks for sharing. The feel sounds authentic and coaxes movement and dancing, matching the theme of the song. As a trumpet player, I love hearing Ms. Skates - wonderful tone quality and stylistically on point. While I might be tempted to use a cup mute for part or all of it, she definitely doesn't need it.

Although others are probably more lyrically inclined than I am, I tend to disagree with the assertion that they need to be thinned out. In listening to some types of Latin music like Cuban and Salsa (albeit not Mariachi), the lyrics many times come in rapid-fire succession for an almost percussive effect.

The harmonic progression strikes me as very traditional to various Latin forms and the contour of the melody seems to match natural vocal inflection of the lyrics on both the verse and the bridge ("The gate swings open and our love is set free..."). I find myself wanting some more motion in the melody on the chorus ("Dance with me...") While it definitely makes for a contrast, I think that the opening relative major chord on the chorus provides contrast enough. On a side note, the cymbal on the chorus washes over everything a bit much for my taste. Maybe the drummer (whose patterns throughout the song are quite nice) could experiment with playing on the bell of the cymbal during the chorus or just using a lighter touch.

I would also be interested in hearing this song at both a faster dance tempo - maybe close to mm 160, and at a slower tempo that might inspire an even more sultry tango - maybe mm 115 or so. Here's hoping it will be a big hit on your gigs!

I liked this song. Fun to listen to and had me dancing by myself. The Dia de los Muertos concept is cool too.
