Lovers in the Rain

By popular demand! whistle Here is a new version - https://www.soundclick.com/html5/v3/player.cfm?type=single&songid=13625996&q=hi

https://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=13625996

I wrote this song many years ago, and I'm just publishing it now. I wanted to write a sophisticated pop song and this is what came out. I still like the song and I wanted to get some feedback on it. Here it is! What do you think?
I sang this and played the electric guitar fills and lead, the rest of the music is vintage Band in the Box MIDI from the 1980's , the electric guitar was worked in just a few years ago, and this mix was put together on Digital Performer and iZotope mastering software. The vocal was part of the original recording in the mid/late 80's.

Lovers in the Rain

We were walking on the hillside you were talking about the past
I was dreaming about our future but that dream faded so fast
All the love we knew
was overcome by feelings that are changing what seemed true
Yesterday in sunshine I lay close by your side
Was there a look I missed that said your love had died
How quick the weather can change
It's much colder and the sky is welling up, feels so strange

chorus

Lovers in the Rain, the scene that ends the play
Only tears remain, come rolling down our cheeks
They won't be seen again, it's just a memory of
Lovers in the Rain, a thousand heartaches later
The lessons and the blame, that's just the lonely baggage
Waiting to be claimed, then bon voyage to Lovers in the Rain

Souvenirs and presents, what to do with all this stuff
When it came to photographs , we took more than enough
Such a lovely day,
I'll just put it on a shelf out of the way
Now I have the time to experiment and explore
My love life's so much broader now than just the girl who lived nextdoor
What a fool was I
So bourgeois and so naive, over silly things I'd cry, like

repeat chorus

guitar solo

repeat chorus

damn Pete thats a good song, written well, I like the music, if this had a little harmony, a bit more bass, I can imagine many people singing this tune. the song stands by its self just the way it is. to me thats a good thing. Lane

That's an encouraging comment Lane. I work hard to get the mix right, and I feel I've made a lot of progress, but don't feel like I've mastered (no pun) it yet. I wish I had the vocal on a separate track, but should probably just be happy to have kept the stereo track that I have from say 30 year's ago. But I suppose I could add a vocal harmony track, just as I did the guitar part? My voice has changed enough it would be like a different person singing.(smile) I think with a few minor lyric changes this would work well for a female vocalist. I was hesitant about publishing this , so thanks for making my day. -- Pete

Hi Pete,

Very sweet song. smile

I love those major seventh chords that give it a late seventies retro sound.

The vocal sounds like you captured a nice performance or composite of performances, but it sounds both distorted and like you are a super faraway distance from the mic and as a result there's not much nuance captured in your vocal. Improvement here would really help showcase this beautiful song. The guitar solo is also mixed too loud in relation to everything else.

But you've got a beautiful song, and that's the most important thing. Your recordings will improve with time.

Mike

Thanks for your critique , Mike. The main recording was done mid- to late 80's on a Vestafire 4 track cassette- and I kept it along with many other recordings on cassettes from that time - the machine I recorded it on is toast and you can't find a working Vestafire on ebay,at least I couldn't ,so I bought a tascam 4 track to try to access this and other songs I did back then.
I had little confidence in this or any of the other songs I recorded at the time. Most of the people I knew who were trying to get into songwriting were getting studio demos or backing tracks made to pitch their tunes. Too expensive for me. so I joined NSAI and learned the craft of songwriting from pros - got some positive feedback on material I wrote for the Country market - did make a demo - had it picked up by TAXI who put it on a promo CD - my song and name next to Randy Bachman- signed a license contract with Rex Benson- had a cut on a CD - had a song in a movie. Then at some point soured on the whole thing- mainly because of money. But I kept my wife, kept my house and enjoy my life and retirement just fine. SO - I have shared this old song to get the feedback it never got before - and I'm happy you generally liked it. If a talented artist like yourself would like to do a version of it - I would be thrilled. If you'd like to reconstruct it, modernize it, that is fine also - and I'd be happy to assist. Thanks Mike, and I always appreciate and look forward to your comments..... Pete

What a lovely song! The distant vocals do add a certain poignancy, but as Mike says, they are kind of distorted. It's a pity you don't have them on a separate track. Do you feel like putting in the effort to recreate the whole song? I think it would be worth it, but that's easy for me to say, since I wouldn't have to do it smile

Thanks Gavin, I dearly appreciate the kind words. I'm trying to get get Mike Z to recreate it for me. Might have to drop it down a key for me to do it 30 years later from the original. ha ha Saying and doing are definitely two different things, you're right. So I'm saying nothing and keeping my options open, ha ha . thanks Gavin, I'm sure we'll talk more....Pete

This is a lovely write indeed.
Beautiful yet heart breaking and peppered with wonderful lines…

“Yesterday in sunshine I lay close by your side
Was there a look I missed that said your love had died”

Your vocals remind me of Barry Manilow.

All the best with it, Pete.

Hey ,Thanks Nelson. Copa, Copacabanna, - that's him, One of his longtime writers spoke to our songwriters group when the old Songwriters Guild was still going. Barry had a following -that's for sure.

Hi Pete.

The song has a sweetness and innocence/vibe of a late 60's/early 70's pop song. There were a lot of different pop sounds in the late 60's, for sure however. I agree with what others have stated above. I think you have a nostalgic desire to keep this vibe as is (which is fine). However it would be interesting hearing a more current rendition and production. Don't sell yourself short about re-singing the song with a modern warmer mic--you might not get it the first take or so, but I bet you would surprise yourself. I think you are sounding fine, but are limited somewhat with enhancing the vocal due to the capture from 30 years ago. A studio with a good quality tube pre-amp could to some degree run the vocal track back through the analog chain then back into a good converter which might also improve the sonic sound of the track--(So I've been told). Maybe Mike could help you with that little trick.

I had one lyric idea. I'm not crazy about the walking on the "hillside." Perhaps walking in the Park/Night/Rain or something that feels more romantic. Hillside sounds like you were bringing in the sheep or cows (kidding ya) but seriously, I do think hillside sounds a bit too odd for a romantic walk--even if it may be "true," sometimes dramatizing the real story is essential just as in the movies to create a better visual picture in one's mind. I think that topic sentence that launches the song is of real importance with a ballad to create that mood or visual.

What fun to bring an old song back to life, nice melody and some really fine lines here Pete! I enjoyed it.

steady-eddie.

I think you've talked me into giving it another shot - no promises but if I can find a pleasing groove I'll try to get into it again - and I should say thanks to all who have been encouraging in regard to this song. I'll take your idea on the first line into consideration. "Twilight" might work - or "As we walked along together" would fit. To me "hillside" seems romantic enough - like an English novel setting? Anyway I hope to get something together in a week or so and we can A-B the versions - Thanks Eddie.....Pete
