I haven't been writing much lately but Irma inspired a couple of songs. I just recorded this one and I'm open to feedback. I can't decide if it's any good or not. Thank you! Irma's ComingIrma’s Coming Copyright © 2017 Colin Ward They say that Irma’s coming, they say she won’t be long They say that Irma’s coming, they say she’s big and strong She’s not my kind of woman, I like ‘em small and sweet I’d better man the ramparts, or I’ll be out on the street They say that Irma’s coming, they say you’d better run They say that Irma’s coming, they say that she’s the one Don’t pay that much attention, they always turn away But this one looks so dangerous, could be a helluva price to pay Bridge My neighbors board their windows, my friends all went away My roof may well not make it, I’ll probably have to pay The treetops are whipping, the wind sounds like a train The lights went out at 8 o’clock, can’t even see the rain They say that Irma’s been here, they say she moved along They say she left destruction, they say the trees are gone But mostly we’ll recover, and live our lives again Before the next one gets here, got some fences to mend Repeat last line

Excellent overall production Colin… very cool performance from beginning to end. Really digging that musical break. I always thought you were one slick guitar player and you showed it plenty here.
How’s that band of yours going, still gigging?

Nelson,
Thank you. Yes, the band is still playing although the summer has been a bit slow. We have landed a repeat restaurant gig which is nice although I prefer festival stages.

well played and produced. I love that solid beat and the adding of instrumentation as you go along. Good words and the mandolin and guitar parts are super. Gotta get inspiration where you can find it. Man, there is a lot of tracks in there!!

Colin,
This is so, so well done, starting slow and stripped, but building to a crescendo, layering instrument after instrument as you go along. Really adds to the power of the song as it goes, building momentum. Killer—and then the break! Wow!
One point to consider on the lyrics: the last line of the second verse and second line of the bridge—“could be a helluva price to pay” and “I’ll probably have to pay,” respectively—seem a bit similar, and given that they are pretty close together, perhaps consider tweaking one or the other line.
I was also wondering if you were trying to shape the lyrics so that it's equally about a woman as it is about hurricane. Early on as I was listening, I thought you might be going that way. Not sure that makes sense, but mentioning it for what it's worth, as it might be interesting to try and go in that direction.
Man, I wish I could play and lay it down like you do, Colin. A really great tune.
Kindest regards,
Deej

Nice work, Colin:
The "build" process worked well. Plenty of good lines. Can't wait to hear a "full band" version when you have time to get back in the studio.
Best wishes, ----Dave

Kevin,
Thanks for listening. I think there are thirteen tracks, but most of them don't last long!

Deej,
Thanks - glad you like it. I think I will change one of the "pay" lines as you suggested. And maybe put in another woman reference. Appreciate it.

Dave,
Thank you. Not sure there will be a band version. I doubt if we could do the build up live.

Good one Colin. I do not know if Irma should actually be a woman though who is going to tear the singer's world apart. As a song about an actual event, I do not know how long it will stay in memory.
Use Irma as the metaphor. [??]

Ricki,
Thanks for that. Glad it got that reaction. Pretty scary stuff actually. Thankful I wasn't further south or east.

Hi Colin,
This is a more folking thing then I heard from you in awhile, and it works great. Nicely layered sound..I love the hard panning you employ in this one; real Mitchell Froomish and cool sounding..

Mike,
Thanks for listening. I appreciate the comments. I like to separate the sounds and people rarely listen in mono any more so why not?
