California
I am a native Californian. My childhood was spent in the great outdoor places up and down this state with my father and grandfather (both avid outdoorsmen, fishermen, and campers). I have gone to those same places, heartbroken, that they are so polluted that the fish cannot be eaten, and the forests & woods are half dead. I lived for two years in the Orient and twelve years in Europe, and have witnessed the effects of pollution (toxic waste, illegal dumping, air and water being fouled, and forests and wooded areas dying as a result, as much as 30% blown over in storms, too weak from pollution to stand strong). Sometimes it helps to vent in poem stories and song lyrics.

Please share your own thoughts, feelings, and creations.

The Worth of Mother Earth
Between the Stars (youtube)
Music by Brent Lewis, Lyrics by Perry Crawford

Out of the girth of Mother Earth,
Her children all are born,
But the fish in the seas and the birds in the breeze
And the animals came to mourn...
The creatures all came to mourn.

Out of the girth of Mother Earth
The humans came to be.
They take out of greed so much more than they need,
Taking all that they see,
They’re taking all that they see.

Deep in the girth of Mother Earth
They dig deep in her veins.
Her black blood pours from the open sores
While men ignore her pain,
While mankind ignores her pain.

All round the girth of Mother Earth
The cancer of man spreads on.
The jungles he clears and the woods disappear
Until everything green is gone.
'Til everything green is gone.

All round the girth of Mother Earth
The ravaged land lays bare.
Except for the sprawl and the thrash over all
And so few men who care,
So very few men who care.

Gone is the worth of Mother Earth
And the end of man is nigh
When there’s not enough of the life giving stuff
Both man and earth will die, will die.
Both man and earth will die.

Warning
[/b]Warning From the Caveman and the Poet (youtube)
Music by Brent Lewis, Lyrics by Perry Crawford

My children look up to the sky as colors loomed above.
Choking smog impersonates the sunsets that they love.
Pollutions' Red Sky Warning streaks across a cloudless sky,
As life within its dark embrace will all too quickly die.

We're standing on a vista point above a mountain lake,
The striking autumn colors in the spring are hard to take.
Pollutions Brown Tree Warning gives the pines an amber hue,
Something that the evergreens should never have to do.

We have warnings from the sky
Warnings from the sea,
The Earth is warning you and me.

I taught my children how to fish and how to let them go,
The taste of campfire fish fries are a joy they'll never know.
Pollutions Sick Fish Warning says that they are not to eat,
The dumping and the acid rain have poisoned all the meat.

The lake, and now the river have a green and murky look,
A yellow foam and oily slick now covers every brook.
Pollutions Water Warning is the evil taste and smell,
The liquid gift from heaven has become a puss from hell.

A nightmare haunts my sleep at night like shadows in a mist,
Of creatures on a Death March, an endangered species list.
Pollutions Nightmare Warning leaves me ever more afraid,
To live to see the day our children join in that parade.

The time is not too late although we've daunting work to do.
It starts by taking action though our numbers may be few.
The Tribes United Chorus warn with rhythm and with rhyme
To take the healing action that will stand the test of time.

We have warnings from the sky
Warnings from the sea,
The Earth is warning you and me.

Messages from Earth
Between the Stars (youtube)
Music by Brent Lewis, Lyrics by Perry Crawford

Man claims logic for himself
to use to justify his pelf,
But logic fails his feeble mind
when Earth responds to man in kind.

The Messages from Earth ring clear
to senses beyond eye and ear,
Awakened soul and pounding heart
bear witness to the living art.

The wind, once howling, now is hushed,
the sun, once yellow, turns to blush,
As leaves turn over seeking breeze,
to bring a sheen to scores of trees.

The cloudy, dark horizon looms,
a flock of birds to shelter zooms,
As silence cloaks the cricket’s song,
tornado’s roar comes loud and strong!

Funneled judges overhead,
descend as sentences are read,
And passed as secret scores are squared,
for some are doomed and some are spared.

Then deep within the bowels of Earth,
come shudders spanning height and girth.
Her earthquakes wash man from his place,
as tsunami tears pouring down her face.

Volcanic lips arise in steam;
she opens wide her mouth and screams.
Her magma curses to the skies,
till more than just her temper dies.

How can mankind not assume
a toxic and polluted womb,
Will not provoke an aftermath
by giving birth to nature's wrath?

Old Hightop (the last tree standing)
Warning From the Caveman and the Poet (youtube)
Music by Brent Lewis
Written by Perry Crawford

A tree named Old Hightop was straining in pain,
The last great tree standing on barren terrain.

They came from the skies and they came from the ground,
The birds, squirrels and man to the last tree around.

The weight on his branches made every twig ache,
The wind from the storm made him shiver and shake.

The bugs ate his leaves and the squirrels cracked his nuts,
The birds pecked big holes, and the men carved deep ruts.

The rainfall had soaked him straight through to the core,
And then he cried out, "I can't take it any more!"

He stretched up a branch toward the storm in the sky
Creating a lightning rod, pointed up high.

A bolt shot straight through him right down to the root!
And covered Old Hightop with ashes and soot!

And out of the smoke fell some feathers and fur
And some things that no one can tell what they were.

The tree spent the night in the cool falling rain,
Blowing up smoke rings and feeling no pain.

Nice imagery, emotions. I'm an old tree hugger, so I'm with ya on those points smile
