Many of you won't know who he is, but for those of us who grew up listening to underground rock and punk of the 80s and alternative of the 90s, Grant was a very important figure to us. He was the drummer and one of the singers and songwriters for the great Minneapolis punk band Hüsker Dü. And, while his solo career didn't reach the heights of his former bandmate Bob Mould (Sugar), his own solo records were still pretty outstanding slices of grandiose 60s-inspired pop.
A huge talent.
While he won't be missed by the public, at large, the way that some other folks (Walter Becker) will be, his absence is going to be felt sharply by a large cult of us.

Just to put you into the know, here is one of his songs from his old band:
"Don't Want To Know if You Are Lonely"

RIP, Grant.

Hey, Todd,

Thanks. Just thanks!

I appreciate anything that anyone does that "connects" to someone, anyone, even if it's only me and a coupla friends.

And this song "connected" in so many ways!

Godspeed, Grant!

Thanks

Midnite

Well, one reaches a fucking point where one can't find the words, given the endless stream of news regarding the deaths of significant musicians and artists......just one big, groaning facepalm.

Husker Du was better known than you might think, but I hadn't heard his solo stuff.

Minneapolis
This was a sad one. Minneapolis is a big city and it's also a small town, and that was especially true back in the 70s and 80s, when I was in my teens and twenties. The town was smaller then.

I knew Grant Hart well enough to say that he knew me. Not well, but well enough. When my band broke up because I was moving to San Francisco, our drummer joined Grant's band Nova Mob.

Grant had a high IQ, and it was immediately obvious to anyone who talked to him for a few moments. I pride myself on stupid trivia knowledge, but we once played a game of Trivial Pursuit that made me feel like an absolute idiot next to Grant. There he is, all drunk and druggy with random ADHD thoughts zinging about, but every single question put to him he could answer. I honestly don't remember him missing one.

I would play solo gigs at a little coffeehouse called Muddy Waters, and that bastard always managed to show up and take my guitar away and play his own gig for the next half hour. I'd sit there and act cool and pretend to not be annoyed. Now I look back and think, jeez...Grant is a historical figure now. Maybe I should get over it.

Nope, still pisses me off.

RIP Grant. I miss rapping with you, you crazy, brilliant, hilarious, overmedicated fiend.

Mark! Lovely tribute...Even the "Nope, still pisses me off."..:-)))...I've been there and done that with others, but this post is about Grant.

Thanks, Mark! Even though life is busy and you don't drop in here too often, it is always appreciated when you do and offer some personal insight. It's appreciated!

Midnite

P.S...Get over it:...You got "bumped" by Grant Hart, and we're supposed to feel sorry for you instead of being envious???? You lucky bastard, you!!!...You'll get no sympathy from me!!! :-))) ....Actually, that could lead to a whole other post: Who "bumped" you from a gig?...Not that we're bitter or anything:-)
