LOL...loved Steely Dan. Some awesome music made by him and Donald Fagan. Their intricate compositions and cool lyrics stood out for me and their sound was unmistakably "Dan"

(with apologies)
We've seen the last, of Good King Walter
Ring out the past his name lives on
Roll out the bones and raise up your pitcher
Raise up your glass to Steely Dan

If writing ever becomes work I think I'm going to have to stop

There's an old joke country vs jazz, that one is playing 3 chords for 10,000 people, and jazz is playing 10,000 chords to 3 people, but Steely Dan proved that you can write popular songs which use jazz chords and still make a nice living and have hits on the radio and play to large audiences

Some amazing people. Really interesting profiles and music. You never realize how complex it is until you try to play it, which I have recently in the horn band I'm in. Very interesting. There is a great video on the "making of AJA" on you tube. They used so many different musicians, they often didn't realize who was playing on certain tracks. But it was amazing stuff.

I had a friend once, who was a very attractive woman who talked about her friend "Jeff" that was coming into town. I get that a lot and usually it's about someone moving to town who wants to be a writer or artist and get some "inside information" on the town. But she said he was a great guitar player and wanted to introduce him to me. I thought... "Great. Just what I need ANOTHER GUITAR PLAYER." I put off meeting him for a while, until she called one night and said he was at her house. So while rolling my eyes I
walked over because we lived very close.
I knocked on the door and there he was:

MAN I was shocked! We spent the evening along with another friend of her's AL KOOPER (Keyboardist for Bob Dylan, producer of Blood Sweat and Tears and Lynyrd Skynyrd) and talked about all kinds of things including Becker and Fagin's relationships, recording processes, and a ton of behind the scenes stuff, most of which I don't remember. Have a few dozen beers, and hanging with your heroes, and you kind of get lost.

But Steely Dan was and is one of those ICONIC groups that came together on the vision of two people. Donald Fagin and Walter Becker. Another one of those magic pairings that we are all fortunate to be able to have the results of forever.

RIP Walter. Thanks for the magic.

I watched a video yesterday about that. They were attempting to go after a sound in their heads and could never find the right combination of players to make a permanent band. So they "did the best they could" with who was available at the time they pulled them in for the recording.
