Been awhile for sure. "Life and all its ups and downs." The latest here are recent recording/demos. Comments alway welcomed. Douglas https://www.soundclick.com/html5/v3/player.cfm?type=single&songid=13623514&q=hiPut The Kettle On [08/30/2017] [V] Guess you could say it's tradition. You could say it's a habit formed over time. Not quite specific to location but more to my families state of mind. Not for everyone but where I come from. If you drop in for a visit and you stay long. While we sit and talk about this, that and the weather someone will have put the kettle on. [C] Gran passed in on to her kids, who passed it on to theirs. Who'll pass it to their own it's something we all share. Once you've knocked and entered and way before you're gone. Someone will have put the kettle on. [V] There might be freshly baked scones steaming on the table. Waiting for some butter and homemade jam. You'll have a bite or two while the tea is steeping, take the mug you're offered 'cause the mug you understand. [Chorus] [V] That's the way it goes, that's the way it is. So why don't you come over, bring the wife and the kids? Late afternoon or evening, even at the crack of dawn. Sit down, take it easy and I'll put the kettle on. [Chorus] Gran passed in on to my mom, who passed it on to me. Who passed it on, well sort of, to my own family. But if you knock and enter it will not take me that long. To fill up that old kettle and to put that kettle on. Once you've knocked and entered and way before you're gone. Someone will have put the kettle on. Copyright © 2017 by Douglas Murphy

Hi again Doug!
This song definitely has much better prosody than the other song--though I like both. This is a very cool song, beautiful melody. It reminds me of a song that Chris Cristofferson might do if he were jamming with The Eagles! Nice work, nice performance--a very fine tune!

Hi Doug. This one reminds me of some of the Irish folk songs I used to hear over there. Very comforting song. I assume you have at least a little Irish in your blood?

Thanks for the words of encouragement Steady Eddie. Much appreciated. Been re-working "Thorns and Petals" rewriting the lyrics and changing the song to an AABA. Will post the latest next week.

My wife is from Ireland, so I can vouch for the power of a cup of tea (as well as other liquid refreshments, of course).
Do you think it should maybe be just a little bit faster? As, Vic remarked, it is a comforting song (what could be more comforting than a nice cup of tea?), but the lyrics also have a light-hearted touch to them, describing a happy occasion and urging friends to come over and join in, which might be suited to a more up-tempo treatment. Just a thought.

Listening as I write, Doug... and I agree with Eddie. Family traditions are so important and you reinforced yours very well. Tea is revered in many families and putting the kettle on was such a nice way of welcoming friends or strangers. Enjoyed so much. ----Dave

Hi, Gavin. Me ancestors are from Ireland and Scotland and tea is a staple in our family. I will be reposting this one with a more quicker tempo as you suggested.
Thanks for stopping by.

Hi E. Swartz,
I was fortunate enough to record Kris Kristofferson and I agree that Doug's song has that great quality.
