Wondering if this is a good organization to send a donation to:
https://ghcf.org/hurricane-relief/

I know there are always frauds that go along with disasters, so I want to make sure the donation goes to help the right people.

Hi John:

I suspect your money would do more good in the hands of the Salvation Army. Maybe Martin Lide (our JPF Member from Houston) will see your post and provide more informed insight. I hope his home escaped the ravages of Hurricane Harvey and it's seemingly endless days of rain and flooding.

Thanks for remembering the folks of Houston, Galveston, Beaumont, Port Arthur and all the small communities who are suffering the loss of nearly everything due to this natural disaster.

All my best, ----Dave

Yeah, the Salvation Army is a good organization. I don't think a donation to the Red Cross would be as effective. The Hurricane Relief Fund set up by Mayor Sylvester Turner and County Judge Ed Emmett may be the most efficient.

Well,
We are waiting for requests from the Red Cross and probably the Salvation Army as well. No doubt we will be donating then and maybe more in the future. My Brother-in-Law has some family in Baytown just east of Houston. The water wasn't too bad there. What a mess.

I chose the Salvation Army Harvey Relief fund. Seemed the most direct help and they accept PayPal.

Salvation Army is almost always the most reliable way to get resources to actual disaster victims.

And Dave....Was lucky. Out of town for the storm. Flew back in at noon. Wife is fine. Home is fine. Car is fine. Truck is fine. Work is fine. I took no hits other than inconvenience and watching the town that I have lived in for forty years and never plan to leave...take a beating.

Thanks for thinking of me Dave.

Hey Martin:

So glad to know things are okay with your home and family. My cousin and his family "escaped" to their place west of Austin. I still don't know if they have returned to Houston... and, if so, how their home was either spared or inundated. I know it must be sad to see so many folks around who have lost so much. Keep us posted when it's convenient.

Dave

I hope that your cousin finds his home to be ok. I'm going downtown tonight on my bicycle and the train. I will message you tomorrow about what I see.

Interesting, though I can't personally verify this:

That post is pretty accurate John. The Red Cross is one of the worst charities to donate to, well beyond overpaying execs. I'd avoid all the top line charities. .none are worthy of donations. The Salvation Army is by far the best. Thanks for posting.

It looks like we'll soon have another set of tragedies to deal with when this newest monster storm hits. Let's hope it hits the mountains of Cuba and fizzles out. If it somehow slips into the Gulf with most of its strength it could be very ugly for anyplace it hits. Texas, Louisiana Alabama or Florida. For a bit they thought it might go up the east coast to NYC. With 57 foot waves at the wall that would put all of Manhattan under deep water.

Salvation Army is at the top of my list as well. They do not pay their people very well, but do look after them their entire lives. Their entire life is in service to others which is admirable.

I used to give to the United Way, reasoning that I was giving to a lot of good causes all at once, but then I read they were arguing over their defined benefit pension plans---the platinum standard for pensions---which led me to look at them a little more closely. Far too many charities are in the first (above) category where a lot of money ends up in the pockets of people who run the place.

A little side trip through a car wash.

Was sending my car through a full service car wash, and it was rolling along behind a brand new, high end Mercedes. Got to chatting with the owner who turned out to be a fund rasing contractor. Charities engaged him to raise their funds and he kept a healthy percentage. Great for the charity that does not want to do the hard work, lousy for those who think they are actually doing something good.

Wish more people investigated the charities and foundations they support.

Be careful of that summary though and do your own research. In Canada, for example, UNICEF puts 67 cents out of every dollar into its programs...so before you cut anyone off, make sure you have the right numbers. Canada publishes the financials of all registered charities so we can easily see where our money is going. I expect that kind of information is also available in the US.

John,

I've run into the same thing with Charities. For about 6 years, I was involved with a group of musicians from my home town of Birmingham, Ala. to do a yearly benefit for TOYS FOR TOTS. IT was really cool in that we wrote and performed a "We Are the World" type song called "IT TAKES LOVE" and had a huge show where all the major local bands, switched members for one night and did it all for the charity. After we raised about $50,000 over a few years, we found out much had been siphoned off and embezzeled by members of the police department. Did do a good bit of good, but could have been better.

I have also done benefits with those "Mercedes driving professional fund raisers." I have no problem with people who do all the hard work of organizing, distributing and keeping all that stuff flowing. Every little bit helps. But sometimes it seems like a bit too much on some charities go to "administration" and not as much on the cause.

I hope everyone can find a proper outlet for their contributions.

MAB

67 cents is pretty lousy though John, so even if that were their real number, I'd go elsewhere. It's also possible that most of the real money is in the US so only salaries come out of the Canadian side which I have heard is the case. If true, that is ridiculous. If false, it is STILL way too much operating cost. In the end, to everyone, it is your money, don't be suckered in to these giant scams which in my view can be more evil that the blight they claim to be fighting. NEVER give to individuals after a tragedy unless you know them personally, Those are often money scams or at best, they become inefficient middlemen who often pay themselves first and think that's helping their cause and all the money is gone and nothing good happens. Musicians are bad about using sites like gofundme to pay their rent or buy drugs rather than making that album... it's all fungible once it rolls in.
