There's been a fair bit of arguing over on the General Message Forum about the objectivity of various news sources (and yes, I got pulled in and started waving my own opinions about rather more than I should have), so I thought this might help to lighten the mood. Whether you're a Fox fan or MSNBC is more your thing, or you're in the middle like most of us, you have to admit that in one very specialized area, you just can't beat NPR... http://mysteriousbeings.com/portfolio/the-npr-song/or, if you prefer to listen on SoundCloud https://soundcloud.com/gavin-sinclair-5/the-npr-song

NPR is where I get the bulk of my news. I trust them more than any other source. And, while every single news source has SOME bias (it's impossible to avoid when it's brought to you by humans), I think that they do their best to try to mitigate it as best as possible: bringing in voices from all areas of the political spectrum. I listen every day. And I am a member of my local NPR station. It's essential to me. And, nice song! I love those names, too! You should submit it to "All Songs Considered" if you haven't already!

Thanks Todd. I listen a lot too. I suppose that's obvious, or I wouldn't have been so enchanted by the names.
I haven't actually submitted it to "All Songs Considered." However, unbeknownst to me, a friend contacted NPR with the SoundCloud link and I know they have been playing it around the office. The son of another friend was dating the producer of the Tiny Desk concerts and sent it to her - unfortunately not before they broke up! I doubt that they will play it, but I might send it to my local stations here in NC. They might be able to use it during a pledge drive or something.

I just got back from a drive and was listening to "Marketplace," which reminded me... did you mention Kai Ryssdal? I can't remember! Another great NPR name.

No, he's not in there, although it's a great name. I confined myself to the folks that contribute to "Morning Edition" and "All Things Considered." There's just too many otherwise. Even imposing this strict limit, I was forced to leave out the sonorous Allison Aubrey, the enticing Corva Coleman, the intriguingly patrician E. J. Dionne and a bunch more. It's getting to where I feel guilty when I hear a name I left out.

Glad you enjoyed it Doug. I'm not sure what you mean by a "retreat," but it has the word great in front of it, that's good.

Very entertaining and somewhat a devious ploy to get airtime perhaps,,I kid. that was a nice full sounding recording and your voice is pleasing. You're from the scotch/irish part of NC I take it"? Wow, a lot of work putting this one together. A lot of the names were long time familiar . The most interesting story I heard recently on NPR was the one about the bag of potato chips- it was scientific - they put two men talking in a room and a bag of potato chips on a table. They photographed just the bag of potato chips through a window at a distance. By decoding the molecular movements of the bag of chips they were able reproduce the conversation of the two men. They highlighted the scientific value of this new technology but finally admitted the CIA did express some interest in it. They could also make the silent movies talk. Now if they could just make Trump talk. - that's a joke , but the other part is true, about the bag of chips. You left out my favorite NPR guys - Click and Clack, the car talk guys - I even got part of a song from one of their shows - about a woman who put a dead fish in the heater of this guys' pickup as a parting gift - he was seeking advise on getting rid of the smell. Well you sound great Gavin and I look forward to listening to more of your songs...it's 11:00 here so 2:00 there - guess you'll read this tomorrow, which is today for you...Pete

Thanks Pete. Glad you enjoyed it. Not so sure about there being a lot of work involved. A list of the names of NPR presenters - a lazy man's lyric, if ever there was one I like Click and Clack too, and their real names are pretty melodic. I confined myself to presenters on the news programs and still had some good ones left over. Actually I'm in a German enclave surrounded by areas settled by Scots-Irish, but I get my Scottishness direct from the source.

Hi Gavin,
I've discovered so much great new music and artists on their "Tiny Desk Concert"s I watch belatedly on youtube.
You are soo Allan Sherman--you've found a genre where your singing is perfect!
I think this one goes on too long. The various names section esp..
But I smiled from start to finish..
Mike

Yes, Mike, there is some great music in those "Tiny Desk" concerts. As I mentioned above, the son of some of our best friends was dating the producer of that feature, and that's what turned me on to it. It is a bit long. I could probably combine a couple of verses into one, ruthlessly weeding out some of the names. A tough editing job, as evidenced by the fact that some folks here have proposed their own candidates for inclusion, which would make it even longer. Maybe I could expand it into a concept album, just chanting names for 20 minutes
