I have always loved the idea of the "Bluebird of happiness" being found in your own back yard, but as I grow older, that idea becomes more complex, so I thought I would write about how hard it is to find happiness around your house as an adult LOL!!

I wrote the lyric and did all music and vocals, the "slide" sound I had made on my guitar with a glass tube you store beads in for crafts.

This was my first song entry in 50/90 in July.

BLUEBIRD OF HAPPINESS on SoundCloud

Bluebird of Happiness
by Tammy Jann
© 2017

Walking through a broken home
where shards of glass
snag and cut your gown

but you keep on pacing
hoping that the bluebird
will finally come around

Keep hanging up the pictures
of all the dreams
you don't want to lose

who is that girl
so full of life
she don't resemble you

Chorus
how did life go from being joyful to not making any sense
now you're out standing in the darkness waiting in suspense
left hanging your hopes on a white picket fence
hoping to find your bluebird of happiness

Try picking up the pieces
arrange it all
back into its place

your cleaning up the scene
and hope the saddness
hasn't left a trace

talk about it sing or shout
don't let it die
from not making a sound

Gather the courage
to go looking
where the bluebird can be found

Chorus

Hi TJ:

I saw the title (you know it's been used before long ago) and had myself a listen. It was much like having a front row seat in a cozy venue somewhere back east... and you belted out that bluesy, wistful masterpiece with artistry and a sincerity seldom heard these days. The vocal reminded me a bit of Gilly Slinn back in her "heydays" over at the Ramp. (That's about the highest compliment I can offer, my friend.) Well done and best of luck getting it up the broken ladder to Musicland. ----Dave

I love this one! It's one of your best!

Has a little tempo and vocal sound of "Billy Joe Mcallister jumped off Tallah..............Bridge"!

You have come a long way GIRL!

Keep up the good work--

Tammy,

I agree with Dave, felt like I was in a small theater up close listening to you--nice balance. I really like the vibe/vocals and lyric/story concept. I do think with this song a bridge would work well after the 2nd chorus, not imperative mind you, but might be cool given the vibe. Great sound with the guitar by the way!

You’ve come along way baby…… indeed.

I just love your vocal performance here, Tammy.
The energy in the chorus brings to mind, “White Rabbit”. Very Cool
The overall construct of the music and vocal is simply stunning.

You are smoking…

Nice! You have a very good voice. I liked the way the end of the first two lines of the chorus kind of took me by surprise by slowing down and descending.

This is awesome! You've got that whole Tammy Thing going on and the groove is really engaging. Love the slide guitar as well. Well that's just great! Now I've got to try it! grin

Tammy,

I really like the singer-songwriter genre, and you are very good here.

The lyrics are meaningful, fresh, poignant but good. The slide guitar riff
added some color, gave it more punch.

My only criticism is the chord you use for this line:

who is that girl
so full of life

Whatever that chord was, my ears didn't care for it. But, for something like this,
I would listen only to a consensus, if I'm the only one saying it, then it's FWIW.

Thanks for sharing, and good luck with it.

Pat

Broken and shards work together nicely as a metaphor. To me....the metaphor would be stronger if shards of (something else) cut your gown.
Something like shards of broken lives, promises...

Glass seems to literal...to me.

Eddie,

Thanks for giving this a spin and glad you liked it. I thought about a bridge, but felt I had said what I wanted and that the lyric was heavy already with emotion and information so I feel like a musical break would be better, but I didn't feel capable of pulling that off myself with my skills, so if this ever gets to a recording studio, that might be the way I go.

Gavin,

Thanks for listening and yes, I don't know why I started playing the chorus that way, I think that I get bored and start monkeying around on the guitar but come recording time, I couldn't hear the chorus without it, glad it sounds okay.

Ricki,

So happy you liked this and you have no idea how many things I used as a slide to get the right sound! I even tried my cowbell which was interesting. There is a man at the open mics that puts a piece of tape across the bridge of his guitar and it makes the greatest sound, I want to try that but am on the fence about putting tape on my guitar, but I do love finding sounds and I picked up the glass tube at Michael's in their dollar section, so I felt a dollar was okay to spend for a sound and I can use it for other things LOL!!

Pat,

Everyone likes what they like and it is certainly fine that this section doesn't feel good for you. I have this song posted on 50/90 and I have people who point out that section and say they love it. That's when you know you are writing for yourself and that is okay too. I appreciate the listen and I do understand that part not being in line with what you expect and glad you stopped by!

Martin,

Thanks for giving this a spin. I understand what your idea is, but I wanted them to be broken to show abuse and her left cleaning up after it. It wasn't written as a metaphor, it was written as an abused person wandering through her home, I wanted it to be raw and show the broken dreams of a woman and her search for a bluebird in her back yard which is almost impossible.

where shards of broken dreams
snag the seams and tear your gown

I think that "shards of broken dreams" is beautiful sounding.
Sooner or later, I'm gonna put it in something of mine.

Not being argumentative at all. Just enjoy considering this. Your writing. Your choices.
Like it either way.

Martin,

I am glad it has inspired you to imagine that line in a new song. I understand what you wrote, of course those lines don't fit the timing of my song, but I do think that one line would be nice to use in another song. It wouldn't make sense in my song when she starts cleaning them up if they aren't real, but I do understand the art of making it a metaphor.

Hi Tammy,

"left hanging your hopes on a white picket fence"

I love it when a metaphor works on multiple levels like this; making those "shards of glass" and "cleaning up the scene" more than likely the detritus of some form of domestic terror the singer has been living with. The craving for some form of normalcy and the courage to face things is explicit yet poeticly stated in most every line.

The singing is a little more restrained than usual from you, but I think this is a good choice on this song. When I'm listening I'm feeling that events have truly gut punched the singer though she continues to try to move forward.

Thoroughly awesome work here. smile

Mike

Michael Z.

I always appreciate your thorough reviews and I am happy that you could enjoy the stories and details of it.I try to make songs to play out but sometimes I worry that some are too simple and some too complicated, but OCD and songwriting are a dangerous pair. Thanks for stopping by!!
