Song title / '' My Guiding Light''
© 2017
_______________________________________
Vs 1:
When I was seventeen years old mama passed away
I had to quit school cause I didn't have no place to stay
Being a teenager and uneducated
I thought that I would never make it
Living on the streets and unemployed
Made life so damn hard
Not knowing where my next meal were going to come from
Any hope for a future seemed impossible

Vs 2:
Waking up every morning with the same clothes on
With no place to take a bath no place to call home
Sleeping under a shed wrapped in paper to keep warm
Praying that the storm would soon blow over
Couldn't help but to wonder what the next day were going to bring
Lord will it be sunshine are will it be rain
Going up and down that same old road
Seemed like all hope was gone

Chorus:
There wasn't a day that didn't go by
I wonder how I was going to survive
I did everything I could do
But nothing seem to come through
So many nights I cried myself to sleep
Wishing that mama was here with me
But through all the bad times
You were my guiding light

Vs 3:
Everyday I went out looking for a job
I would see signs on the door saying we don't hire vagabonds
The hard times I was going through seem endlessly
There ain't no worse feeling in the world than being hungry
People walk by they pretend not to see
Wouldn't even give me a dollar to buy a cup of coffee
Sometimes I didn't care rather I lived are died
That was just how bad I was hurting inside

Bridge:
I remember one night saying a prayer to God
I was so tired of fighting I had given up
I said Lord if you have a blessing for me
Give it to someone else who is in need
That very next day I received a telephone call
Wasn't expecting any good news at all
I was blessed richly and abundantly
Until this day my life has never been the same

Chorus:
There wasn't a day that didn't go by
I wonder how I was going to survive
I did everything I could do
But nothing seem to come through
So many nights I cried myself to sleep
Wishing that mama was here with me
But through all the bad times
You were my guiding light

This must have been inspired by a story you may have read or seen on television from long ago. Today they couldn't away with signs such as "we don't hire vagabonds". Of course they could do so in more discreet ways just as they do with older workers, etc. We may be seeing another time when a spotlight is placed on relationships, those outside of love affairs, that is. God knows there are so many that need attention, and I for one would like to better understand how to rebuild them. Your personal story by any chance? Obviously no relation to the long running soap opera of the same name even if the song itself qualifies for soap opera status. Very powerful lyric here.

Dennis, your writing brought back many memories of my upbringing in a vagabond family and the emotions you depict in the writing are spot on. The exhaustion of struggling to survive gives birth to dreams of one day being able to really live. I left my vagabond family and became homeless and alone for a stretch, believing the skills I learned from my parents were all I needed. But in fact, they were only good for survival and had little application toward really living. For that we need each other and the skills that bind us together, looking out for one another's welfare. Music is one very powerful way to keep us aware and inspired to act for the welfare of others as your piece examples. Lyrics bring the emotional power of melody, harmony, and rhythm together with concepts, thought, wisdom, caring, and hope.

Keep it coming.
