Light Under A Basket (Neil Cotton)

When he was a child mama gave advice
No pushing, no fighting, and no arguing
You’ll keep your friends if you play nice
No bragging how good you are at things

All this was good for most of his life
Till he needed to break out and shine

Keeping his light under a basket
Not letting other people see
Hiding his new growing talent
Hindered attempts to succeed
Keeping his light under a basket
Hindered attempts to succeed

All was great not being aggressive
Enjoyed friendships with his buddies
Never learned to be more assertive
Appeared to have low self esteem

When it came to interview time
He didn’t brag jobs passed him by

Keeping his light under a basket
Not letting other people see
Hiding his new growing talent
Hindered attempts to succeed
Keeping his light under a basket
Hindered attempts to succeed

Keeping his light under a basket
Hindered attempts to succeed

Thanks I keep trying...it's fun to see words evolve into a song.

Yes all advice isn't necessary good advice.
My only not? Perhaps shorten a couple of those longer words.
They seem a mouthful lol

Neil,

I really love the title and hook to this song—it has a special something going on, and the metaphor of "light under a basket" is really strong. So there's a lot to like here. That said, you lose me a bit following the second stanza, in which you write “Till he needed to break out and shine”. As I read it, the line implied a change—that he would come out from under his basket and shine. But the rest of the song suggests he never does—rather he hinders his attempts to do so. Is this a song about growth and redemption or one about resigning oneself to who they've been brought up to be? Either could work, but if the latter, I think that second stanza needs to be revisited.

Gosh, I may be totally misreading and over-analyzing this, and if so, my apologies. This has the makings of a great tune, and I enjoyed reading and commenting on this. And I know I'll enjoy hearing it regardless (as I usually do with your tunes), so please feel free to disregard my babbling if I'm off base.

My best regards, as always,

Deej

Deej, I remain open to any comments I will look at that issue ...the stanza is a prechorus but may not come off as that....

All this was good for most of his life
Except when he should break out and shine
(Held him back when needed to shine)
(Except when he should stand and shine)

Just Plain Quotes
"Our enemies may not be who we think they are. They are not Major Label monopolies. The world will always have 'majors.' They are not big corporations who own everything. The world will always have 'big' ones. Our enemies are not the loud mouthed critics telling us we will fail. The world will always have those too. Our most dangerous enemy is our own quiet acceptance of the fate we perceive these entities have mapped out for us. The only danger is our own complacency, or inactivity, and our willingness to believe so called experts who tell us we 'can't' and that our grim fate is inevitable." -Brian Austin Whitney
